•They are free, open cases and online

higher education courses.
•They use different online resources such
as videos &message boards to capitalise
classes by encouraging peer learning
networks.
•MOOC’s enable students to access high

quality academic content and an
opportunity to engage with a wider
audience.
•They can help meet the demand for long
career education through low-cost and
flexible delivery.
MOOC’s continue…
•MOOC’s offer a chance for many people,

wherever and whoever they are, to follow
courses led by distinguished scholars and
to connect with a community of likeminded fellow learners globally.
• Access to the courses is free, thus,
academics & institutions are able to
communicate with diverse people.
Other paid-for services

e.g. career
services or tuition support services.
•By diversifying learning pathways
MOOC’s may help to expand the
opportunities for institutions to offer
rounded developmental education.
•These developments are part of a change

in attitude towards online spaces across
our lives. They help us from:
banking & retail, media & publishing , to
online friendship & social networking
•Increased access to the web and new

digital technologies have reshaped many
areas of life from:
broadcasting & publishing to
social relations
The introduction of 3G & 4G networks
increased mobile connections.
•Mobile connectivity devices

e.g. tablets,
smart phones, is increasing in emergency
economies, including China.
cMOOC- courses based more closely on

the original ‘connectivist’ distributed peer
learning model e.g. MOOC, connectivism
& connective knowledge.
xMOOC- courses are structured around
more conventional lecture formats e.g.
Coursera, edX & Udacity.
1.

Coursera: offers over 300 courses from
a range of subjects including Life
Sciences and Biology (25 courses).
1.

Futurelearn: it aims to deliver an
engaging & entertaining learning
experience & allows people to fit
learning into and around their everyday
lives.
•Enrolment on MOOC’s continues to grow

as the number of courses & institutions
offering xMOOC’s in particular has
increased from 20000 to 60000 initial
registrations.
MY FIELD OF INTEREST
•LIFE SCIENCE
•Genetics is definitely a topic to pursue in

MOOC’s because it is modern and it uses
advanced technology to find out data and
for data collection e.g. Gel electrophoresis
& DNA profiling.
