- What is it? What does it look like in the classroom? Youre going to be talking about what youre teaching but I think there is a realy opportunity here as well to discuss HOW you are going to teach it - so I thought I’d talk about 21stcentruy pedagogy and what it looks like in the classroom Thank you for having me, Ive been invited here today to talk about pedagogy and I think is particularly important that when you come together to talk about WHAT you are go teach that you also discuss HOW you are going to teach it – an in many ways I think the HOW is really more important than the WHAT – because as teachers whet we are really trying to teach students – more than psychology is HOW to learn, how to inquire and how to be lifelong learners.
- So when we start talking about pedagogy we often hear words like 21st century pedagogy, mLearning, blended learning, eLearning, and what all these words really represent is a CHANGE in the way we teach and that we are following different processes for teaching and learning than we have for the past 100 years – and the aim is that eventually these concepts wont be so different and that in fact the m,e,blended will fall away and what we will have is just learning and we will call this … what were we thinking.
- So I just wanted to show you some pictures and kind of stretch you mind a bit about what learning could look like – these are some pictures from a public school in sweden and I think they really challenge our idea of what a classroom could look like and what type of environment is best for learning
- So you might not be able to transform your classroom to look quite like this but more than the physical space what is interesting for me is what the students are doing in the space. The students are making choices about how they are most comfortable learning, the learning is focused on collaboration, learning is differentiated – students are doing different things.
- And nowhere do we see this … students sitting in rows being directed by the teacher
- Teacher as director – stood at the front of the class – you determine what, when,howTeacher as facilitator – you create a framework students operate within thatOne-size fits all – weve already covered thatPersonalised – based on interests, skills, paceTeacher – as expertStudent – experience, culture, interests – recognised and developed in the classroomSo take a minute and think about where you fit within that – I think its quite a paradigm shift to think about what a 21st Century classroom would look like.
- These people are all making choices about how they do their work, they share ideas, choose how they spend their time, they have to be creative,
- We’re good at modernisation – we use thebalckborad and then the OHP, and now the data projector – and we say that we are using technology in the clasroom – but really we havent changed the proccess of learning
- How is this different from this?
- When it comes to technology this is the pedagogical difference …WATCHING the TV/WhiteboradCREATING, DEVELOPING,
- So you’ve decided actually you do want to change your pedagogy ….. Where do you start ….And over the whiteboard markerRe-arrange the desksFocus on learning as inquiry – students asking questions, finding answers, teaching each other
- Why are you writing the date, learning outcome – students come to class not knowing what they are going to be learning, or with an understanding of why they should be learning it. They come to class sit down and passively wait for you to tell them what to do and then are disappointed when they don’t engage. Why are your students not running the classroom. Think about all the notes you write on the board – why cant your students be doing that?
- This is a big one – because if you rearrange the desks to they arent all facing the borad – how are you going to teach your students – try it for a week. - you might have to have different activities happening ate different tables, students are sitting togather, how can you learning activites be designed to support such collaboration
