Around the currently available large piles of Big Data, there's happening quite a mixed gathering: Business Engineers define which insightswould be precious, Analysts build models, Hadoop programmers tame the flood of data, and Operations people setup machines and networks. It's exactly the interplay of all participants which is central to project success. This setup together with the distributed nature of processing poses new challenges to well-established models of assuring software artifact quality: How can non-programmers define acceptance criteria? How can functionalities be tested which depend on cluster execution, orchestration of, e.g., different hadoop jobs without delaying the development process? Which data selection is suited best for simulating the live environment? How can intermediate results in arbitrary serialization formats be inspected? In this talk, experiences and best practices from approaching these problems in a large-scale log data analysis project will be presented. At 1&1, our team develops hadoop applications which process roughly 1 billion log events (~1 TB) per day. We will give an overview of the hard- and software setup of our quality assurance environment, which includes FitNesse as a wiki-style acceptance testing framework.Starting from a comparison with existing test frameworks like MRUnit, we will explain how we automate the parameterized deployment of our applications, choose test data sampling strategies, perform workflow management and orchestration of jobs / applications, and use Pig for inspection of intermediate results and definition of final acceptance criteria. Our conclusion is that test-driven development in the field of Big Data requires adaption of existing paradigms, but is crucial for maintaining high quality standards for the resulting applications.

JavaScript is an enormously popular programming language, because of its unique place as the programming language of the web. Outside of that domain, JS is barely a blip compared to other dynamic languages like Python and Ruby. Outside of the browser, JavaScript is lacking something critical: a significant standard library. Thanks to a powerful standard library and a common module system, sophisticated applications can be written in Python and run unchanged on Windows, Mac and Linux and even across different interpreters including Jython and IronPython. The CommonJS project (formerly ServerJS) is building up a standard library API to give privileged JavaScript applications this same kind of interop. Imagine a server-side webapp that runs equally well in Rhino, SpiderMonkey and v8. We're getting there. Even better, those apps can easily share modules between the browser and the server, which is something you don't get in other languages. In this talk, I'll provide quick background on the project and demos of several implementations of the emerging standard, including how CommonJS impacts Mozilla's Jetpack and Bespin projects.

The last 5 years, Kafka and Flink have become mature technologies that have allowed us to embrace the streaming paradigm. You can bet on them to build reliable and efficient applications. They are active projects backed by companies using them in production. They have a good community contributing, and sharing experience and knowledge. Kafka and Flink are solid choices if you want to build a data platform that your data scientists or developers can use to collect, process, and distribute data. You can put together Kafka Connect, Kafka, Schema Registry, and Flink. First, you will take care of their deployment. Then, for each case, you will setup each part, and of course develop the Flink job so it can integrate easily with the rest. Looks like a challenging but exciting project, isn't it? In this session, you will learn how you can build such data platform, what are the nitty-gritty of each part, how you can plug them together, in particular how to plug Flink in the Kafka ecosystem, what are the common pitfalls to avoid, and what it requires to be deployed on kubernetes. Even if you are not familiar with all the technologies, there will be enough introduction so you can follow. Come and learn how we can actually cross the streams!

Modeling languages are generally applied for developing systems and software – both internally, with domain-specific languages, and with standardized languages targeting a general purpose and a wide audience. Way too often these languages are weakly created and defined leading to poor quality: Language definitions tend to contain errors and inconsistencies; notations do not recognize the communication and problem-solving needs of humans; standardization organizations push exchange formats that do not fully work and offer certificates that do not measure mastery of the language. We describe common problems in language development and point them out with examples from known cases. To overcome these problems, we suggest several solutions to improve language development, including using modeling languages specifically designed to define modeling languages, continuous testing and prototyping, and keeping language users in the loop.
