Why do people get Spina Bifida? It is believed it has to do with a combination of genes and the environment. A person might have certain genes that put him or her at risk for spina bifida, then something in the environment triggers the disease. A major environmental trigger for spina bifida is a lack of folic acid in the mother’s diet during pregnancy. One of the best ways to prevent spina bifida is to take folic acid vitamins for a few months before getting pregnant and during the pregnancy. http:// www.google.com/imgres?imgurl =http://spinabifidacrusade.webs.com/image007.jpg&imgrefurl=http:// http://www.teenhealthandwellness.com/article/433?search=spina%20bifida
