Accommodation Ratings
To assist with the selection of your accommodation, we have created our own rating system. Please note these gradings are a guide only and may
alter throughout the year.
A standard level of accommodation with a limited range of rooms and facilities. Rooms are clean with basic furnishings.
Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of rooms and facilities, with rooms furnished to a comfortable
standard.
Superior standard of accommodation with a wide range of rooms and facilities, and a higher standard of service.
First Class accommodation with an excellent range of facilities and services. Accommodation in this rating is
considered among the best in Hawai‘i.
A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities for the accommodation falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite
subjective and generally speaking, the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your travel consultant to ensure
you get the accommodation to best suit your needs. When selecting your accommodation please note that the standard bedding configuration in
Hawai‘i is two double beds, with a maximum of two children free using existing bedding. This can vary.
Child Policy: Please note bedding configuration varies between properties and in some cases with different room types within a property. Some
hotels also offer family bonuses and specials. Your travel consultant will help you choose the hotel to best suits you and your family’s needs.
Price Indicator: The price is provided as a guide only. The actual price may differ to that indicated in this brochure due to currency fluctuations,
special events, trade shows or peak periods. Your travel consultant will quote you the actual price at the time of booking. Per person pricing is
based in New Zealand dollars.

You’ll see the best of Hawai‘i if
you venture off the well-trodden
path. A rental car is an absolute
must. Maui’s Hana Highway boasts
waterfalls and ocean views, as well
as roadside shacks and the peaceful
town of Hana; a sleepy nugget of
unspoilt Hawai‘i, with nostalgic
stores and locals with beautiful
smiles. Many people have described
Maui as ‘traditional Hawai‘i’ due
to its misty mountains and historic
towns, such as Paia, and Makawao
which is also home to the Paniolo
(Hawaiian cowboy). In Kaua‘i,
ditch the wheels and commandeer
a kayak. Set off along the Wailua
River and discover Napali Coast,
or discover Waimea Canyon on
Kaua‘i’s west side. Named “The
Grand Canyon of the Pacific”,
it’s enormous, rugged and more
than 1098 metres deep; providing
unprecedented views of Kaua‘i’s
dramatic interior.
Hawai‘i is a playground for active
travellers and with warm, clear
waters, it’s perfect for ocean lovers.
Activities include snorkelling,
diving, game-fishing and whale
watching (between November
and April). Over on O‘ahu’s North
Shore, Waimea Bay is popular for
its Waimea Bay Rock, a nine metre
monster that daredevils choose
to jump from. The North Shore
is also a mecca for die-hard surf
enthusiasts. In winter the waves are
enormous and play host to the Vans
Triple Crown of Surfing, whereas in
summer the waves are gentler and
friendlier for everyone.
For something a little more sedate,
Sharks Cove, with its shallow tide
pools is a fun-for-all family option.
And on Maui, the island’s rugged
terrain attracts all those who love
volcano hikes, fresh water caves and
rainforest walks.

6 TIPSfor your
Hawai‘i
Holiday
Hawai‘i is actually comprised of six
very different islands. In beautiful
Molokai you can explore the world’s
tallest sea cliffs on a hot-hooved
mule, while Hawai‘i Island boasts
some of the most unique volcanic
experiences in the world. For
something really cool, head to the
end of Highway 130 in the Puna
District (on the coast at Kalapana)
and hike to an area where lava
from Kilauea Volcano flows into
the sea. The viewing area is open
daily from 3-9pm, but be aware that
volcanic activity can change at any
time. Experience the famed Hana
Highway, a 104 kilometre route
along Maui’s stunning coastline
or try paddle boarding in Kaua‘i.
Alternatively, stay on O‘ahu and
venture one hour out of Waikiki to
the North Shore. You’ll be greeted
by a shoreline of fine-looking waves
(and even finer looking surfers).
3
Take yourself to Hawai‘i Island
for a manta ray dive. The mantas
frequent the Kona Coast, notably
the bay fronting Sheraton Kona
Resort & Spa, and come nightfall
boat tours, certified divers and
snorkellers are all permitted to
venture amongst them. Hawai‘i’s
snorkelling is awesome and is
always best in the morning, before
the trade winds pick up. Maui’s
a great place to take the plunge
because it’s replete with bright
coral, tropical fish and if you
venture to Turtle Town, multiple
sea turtles. Some of the top
spots are the northern section of
Ka‘anapali Beach near Black Rock,
or the small island of Molokini,
which is just southwest of Maui. Join
a Molokini Snorkel Cruise for a fuss-
free guide through coral and marine
life. From November - April, you
might also get to see whales.
Discover authentic Hawaiian
flavours loved by the residents.
O‘ahu’s famed North Shore food
trucks are always swarmed by locals
and that’s because they’ve been a
Hawaiian institution for decades.
Look for Giovanni’s, one of the
original (and best) food trucks in
Hawai‘i. If you like raw fish, you’ll
love Poké. Relatively similar to
ceviche, it’s thick cubes of raw tuna
marinated with soy and sesame…
Ask for added avocado to make it
extra delicious. When staying in
Waikiki, The Shore Bird Restaurant
allows guests to cook their own
dinner at the Outrigger Reef on the
Beach, while Leonard’s Bakery has
been selling malasada since 1952.
A malasada is a hole-less donut
stuffed with custard (or chocolate)
and dusted in sugar and cinnamon.
It’s a crime to leave Hawai‘i without
trying one.
You’d be hard pushed to find a bad
patch of sand in Hawai‘i. Many of
the beaches are ranked in ‘Top
Beaches’ categories, including the
famous ‘Dr Beach’ list which named
O‘ahu’s Haunama Bay as the best
beach for 2016. Also on O‘ahu,
is the platinum white Makapu’u
Beach. Nestled in a cove-like bay
and defined by its cascading drifts
of sand. It’s an easy day jaunt
from Waikiki, with a lighthouse to
explore and convenient restroom
facilities beside the beach. Kauna‘oa
Bay on Hawai‘i Island boasts
bluer-than-blue waters and is also
known as Mauna Kea Beach for its
nearby hotel of the same name.
This spot is ideal for snorkellers,
sunbathers and sandcastle makers
alike. One of our favourite Hawaiian
beaches resides on Maui. Offering a
whopping five kilometres of white
sand, Ka‘anapali Beach provides
bountiful snorkelling opportunities,
plentiful resorts and nearby golf
courses.

Experience
Hawai‘i
As your plane begins its descent, you lean forward in your seat, hoping to catch a
glimpse of the emerald and iconic volcanic peak known as Diamond Head, rearing
out of the ocean and fringed with white sand. The moment you step off the plane
you know you’ve arrived in the right place – the air is warm and has that languid
feel that you only find in the tropics. Then, as if to reassure you further, you’re
greeted, not by the usual nod from a customs official, but with a brilliant smile and
a welcoming ‘aloha’. It’s a greeting you’ll hear a hundred times a day in Hawai‘i, and
one which you’ll find yourself slipping into your own language as you melt into the
rhythm of the islands. Hello, goodbye, peace, love and happiness – all sentiments
that suit the Hawaiian lifestyle perfectly. With its Polynesian heritage, it’s easy to
imagine that New Zealand would be like this if it had the good fortune to be dragged
a few hundred miles closer to the equator.
It’s the sort of destination that makes you want to try new things. Fancy learning
to surf? You’ll find a beginner-sized wave somewhere on any given day, and there’s
no shortage of patient instructors to get you up and riding. Or learn a new artform
or custom from the Islands of Aloha. The friendly Hawaiian locals will be only too
happy to share their stories and the strong spiritual connection between Hawai‘i
and New Zealand. One thing is certain – on your last night, as you watch the sun sink
into the Pacific, you’ll wish you could dally a little longer.

Our favourite things to see and do
Waikiki Beach Walk® – Make sure you check out the art
galleries and shops at the Waikiki Beach Walk®. Home to the
famous Yard House where you can taste over 110 different
types of beer.
Waikiki Trolley – A fun way to see the sites. The red line
is for the history buffs – explore 13 stops in historic Honolulu,
take the green line for a scenic tour along the east coast of
O‘ahu past Diamond Head and the pink line is for all the
shopaholics.
Ala Moana Shopping Centre – The world’s largest open-
air shopping centre with over 320 shops. Here you’ll find
Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Old Navy, GAP – the list
goes on.
Pearl Harbour – This is a must, a very moving tribute to
those who lost their lives here on December 7th, 1941.
North Shore – Head to the North Shore and check out all
the surfing action at famous beaches such as Waimea Bay and
Sunset Beach. Stop at the Aloha General Store – the birth place
of Shave Ice and feast on fresh shrimp from one of the many
shrimp trucks on the side of the road.
Dining – There are so many amazing places to eat and drink
in Waikiki. A few of our favourites are Roy’s, Bill’s Hawai‘i,
The Pig & Lady and the always lively Duke’s.
International Marketplace – Head to the re-designed
International Marketplace with over 60 brand new stores and
restaurants in the heart of Waikiki. The Grand Lanai offers
seven signature restaurants unique to Waikiki.
O‘ahu
An old-fashioned trolley bus rumbles along streets fringed with palm trees. Beyond
lies a white sandy beach where tourists relax. The surf is small but perfectly formed
– just right for a morning surfing lesson. When you’re done, saunter barefoot to
a breakfast of fresh pineapple, strong Kona coffee and a pastry, in anticipation of
some serious shopping. Such are the highlights of Waikiki, but don’t be trapped by
its charms – O‘ahu has so much more to offer beyond Honolulu. Hire a car and circle
the island. On the east coast you’ll find soaring cliffs, talcum-powder beaches and
a quieter way of life, the perfect foil to the fun and frivolity of Waikiki. The world-
famous surf beaches of the North Shore are another highlight, and even if you’re
not a surfer, Sunset Beach may be the world’s best spot to watch the sun go down.

Our favourite things to see and do
Makawao – A thriving arts community in up-country Maui well worth
visiting. Take in a weekend rodeo event, and if you’re there over the 4th
of
July enjoy the Makawao Rodeo, one of Hawai‘i’s largest paniolo (Hawaiian
cowboy) competitions.
Iao Valley State Park – A peaceful, lush area centring around Iao
Needle, a towering black rock pinnacle soaring over 365 metres high. It’s
best to go in the early morning and there are lots of great hikes from which
to admire the area’s rich foliage, natural pools and scenic mountain views.
Lahaina Historic Trail – Pick up a walking guide from the Lahaina
Visitor Centre and explore Lahaina’s rich whaling and plantation history,
as well as the historic court house, jail and banyan tree on a self-guided
tour throughout Lahaina Town.
Golf – There are many golf courses which will satisfy even the most
demanding golfer. Courses are flanked by crashing waves and soaring
hillsides with panoramic vistas and tropical landscapes.
Road to Hana – With over 600 hairpin turns and 54 narrow bridges, the
famous road to Hana is much less a thoroughfare as it is a life lesson. Slow
down and enjoy the ride, there’s a surprise around every corner.
Haleakala National Park – Rising more than 3000 metres from the
sea, Haleakala is a dormant volcano and is one of Maui’s most memorable
attractions. A sight not to be missed is watching the sunrise over the
unusual lava forms. Don’t forget to rug up as it can be quite cool at the top
of the mountain. On a clear morning you may even see the neighbouring
islands of Hawai‘i, Lana‘i, Moloka‘i, O‘ahu and Kaho’olawe.

Maui
On the west coast of Maui, there’s a pretty
little town named Lahaina where you can
while away the hours drinking cocktails and
gazing out across the sea to the neighbouring
islands of Lana‘i and Moloka‘i. Art galleries and
restaurants now line the quaint main street
where once whaling ship crews roamed. At the
other end of the island is Hana, a small town
whose main attraction is the journey itself with
104 kilometres of coastal road that incorporates
600 bends and 54 one lane bridges. Between
the two is massive Haleakala, a volcano that
forms more than 75% of the island, with
spectacular sunrises and views. And dotted
all around the island are the most beautiful
beaches and bays, there are resort laden
beaches, long white sand beaches, secluded
rocky coves, beaches fronted by parks and
picnic areas – you’re spoilt for choice.

Our favourite things to see and do
Kilauea Lighthouse – Built in 1913 as a beacon for travelling ships, its
light was turned off in the 1970s. The view of the rugged northern coastline
and the deep-blue Pacific makes this the perfect spot for photos.
Spouting Horn Blowhole – Located on Kaua‘i’s South Shore, it is
quite spectacular and one of the most photographed spots. The Poipu surf
channels into a natural lava tube here and releases a huge spout of water
during large swells.
Waimea Canyon – Stretching 22 kilometres long, 1.6 kilometres wide
and more than 1100 metres deep, the Waimea Canyon Lookout provides
panoramic views. There are numerous trails to traverse for beginners and
seasoned hikers.
Napali Coast – The only land access to this enchanted area is via the
Kalalau Trail, an 18 kilometre trail that starts at Kee Beach, crosses five
different valleys and ends at secluded Kalalau Beach. If you don’t feel like
walking, take a cruise for some unforgettable scenery.
Fern Grotto – On Kaua‘i’s east side, accessible only by a short boat trip
up the Wailua River, the grotto is natural lava-rock, lush with hanging ferns
and tropical foliage, cooled by the mists of a waterfall. There was a time
when the grotto was off-limits to all but Hawaiian royalty, but for more
than 50 years, riverboats have provided tours of the site.
Dining – With everything from fine dining to food trucks, you’ll find
something on Kaua‘i to suit your palate. Tahiti Nui in Hanalei and Keoki’s
Paradise in Poipu are two not to be missed. Both offer fresh seafood and
live entertainment just about every night.

Po’ipu Beach Park
Kaua‘i
They call Kaua‘i the ‘Garden Isle’, but it’s
like no garden you’ve ever seen before. Its
mountaintops trap the rainclouds that roll
in off the Pacific, so its peaks and valleys are
draped with lush vegetation. Geologically it’s
the oldest of the four main islands of Hawai‘i,
so it’s had plenty of time to develop some
spectacular scenery. Mark Twain described
Waimea Canyon as the ‘Grand Canyon of the
Pacific’, while another highlight is the Napali
Coast, where sheer cliffs rise thousands of feet
straight out of the ocean. This coast is only
accessible by hiking, boat or helicopter, but
it’s well worth the effort. Of course, you don’t
have to travel so extravagantly to appreciate
Kaua‘i’s wonders – hire a bicycle from Kapa’a
and cruise the cycle path that follows the coast
for several kilometres. You’ll find your own
patch of paradise.

Taking advantage of the sunny side of the
island, and set amongst swaying palm trees
and plumeria blossoms, this oceanfront
condominium resort is an oasis by the sea.
Nestled amongst landscaped gardens on
the site where the oldest sugar plantation in
Hawai‘i once stood, this resort offers a range
of accommodation options from beachfront to
garden view. If swimming, snorkelling, tennis
or golf are on your holiday to-do list then this
is the place for you.
Just minutes to the famous Spouting Horn
Blowhole and Shipwreck Beach, you’ll
find these condominiums nestled amongst
tropical gardens. Offering beautiful ocean
views, winding pathways and a variety of
accommodation including one, two and three
bedroom suites, as well as three and four
bedroom private homes all with fully equipped
kitchens. Golf, dining and shopping are all
nearby so you’ll never be short of things to do.
At this fantastic beachfront resort you will
experience personal service and the warmth
of ‘Aloha’. Every room in the beach and ocean
wings face the sea and greet the morning
sunrise. For those who prefer quiet beauty, the
garden wing rooms overlook acres of vibrant
tropical blooms and sparkling waterfalls.
Relax, unwind and enjoy delicious fresh food
and refreshing specialty drinks at Lavas on
Poipu Beach – the Island Spiced Lava Wings
are a fantastic choice.
On the eastern shore, only a 40 minute drive
from Kaua‘i’s famed Bali Hai, experience the
beauty of this condominium resort with one
and two bedroom apartments. With a two
acre heated river pool, waterslides and three
sandbottom whirlpool spas, there’s plenty
of space to relax and enjoy the peaceful
surroundings. Kaua‘i Village shopping center
is just steps away with a Safeway supermarket,
so you can stock up on food to cook in your
designer kitchen.
If you are looking for exclusivity and an
abundance of luxury, then look no further.
Located on the north side of the island, this
sophisticated resort offers a range of facilities
including the Halele‘a Spa and two spectacular
golf courses. If you prefer a more relaxing
holiday then the infinity pool overlooking
breath-taking Hanalei Bay (with friendly pool
attendants offering you frozen grapes and
fresh pineapple slices to cool you down) is the
place to be. An indulgent holiday experience.

Our favourite things to see and do
Volcanoes National Park – Dramatic, diverse, vast and still growing!
To best appreciate the volcanoes, plan to spend at least a day exploring
the park.
Punalu’u Beach – Visit the black sand formed from hardened lava that
has been crumbled into tiny particles. This is a popular spot for beachgoers
and is also a habitat for honu (turtles).
‘Akaka Falls State Park – After a short hike you’ll first see the 30 metre
Kahuna Falls, then continuing on the loop track witness the towering
‘Akaka Falls plunging 135 metres from the cliffs above.
Deep Sea Fishing – A great place to hook big mahimahi, ono, ahi and
Pacific blue marlin is off the Kona Coast.
Golf Capital of Hawai‘i – Their wide open spaces, dramatic contours
and elevation changes make the 18 golf courses here a fantastic day out.
Helicopter Ride – Take a ride and view some of the most incredibly
diverse and interesting landscapes in the world.
Kona Coffee – Don’t forget to try one of Hawai‘i’s most famous exports
and take a couple of bags home for yourself.
Manta Rays – Discover these beautiful creatures that can be found near
the Sheraton Kona Resort. And if you’re staying at the property watch
them from the shoreline in the evening or head out on a short boat ride to
learn more about them.
Hawai‘i Island
Volcanoes National Park on the island of
Hawai‘i (known as the Big Island), is one of the
few places where you can actually see new land
being created as molten lava plunges into the
sea. The sudden meeting of hot rock and cool
water creates a vast steam cloud that can be
seen from miles away, but to see it after dark is
even more impressive, glowing red against the
black lava field and night sky. Volcanoes aren’t
the only reason to visit the island of Hawai‘i
however. On the west coast is Kona, a cute
little waterfront town that today is famous for
its coffee and World Ironman championship.
Great men have walked this land – this was the
last royal residence of King Kamehameha the
Great, while nearby Kealakekua Bay is where
Captain Cook first set foot on the island and
where he was later killed.

Emergency Roadside Assistance
While each vehicle is serviced and cared for individually there may be
an instance that you need some assistance. You can rest assured that in
Hawai‘i, Hertz provides Emergency Roadside Assistance 24 hours a day,
365 days a year.
Hertz NeverLost
Hertz NeverLost satellite navigation system is available at a surcharge,
in certain vehicle types at selected airport and downtown locations
across the country. The system has extensive detailed mapping, a wide
easy-to-use full-colour touch-screen that provides access to turn-by-turn
directions to points of interest including hotels and petrol stations,
simply by touching an icon. Ideal for the independent traveller as you
get to see and enjoy your surroundings instead of trying to read a map.
Things to think about:
•• Driving licence requirements
•• Minimum age restrictions and driving restrictions
•• Additional driver conditions
•• Deposits
•• One way rental fees
•• Optional equipment e.g. child seats, roof racks
•• NeverLost is recommended
•• Fuel policy
•• When you collect your car Hertz will take an imprint of your
credit card as security. The credit card must be in the renter’s
name. Depending on rate type booked, additional taxes, fees and
insurances may also apply at this time
Touring by Rental Car
Driving in Hawai‘i
Exploring Hawai‘i by car is easy. Driving on the
right hand side of the road may be different,
however the roads are excellent, well sign-
posted and spacious. Just remember the centre
line should be by the driver!
Choosing your Rental Car
Take into consideration the size of the vehicle
you require. If the vehicle is to be used for day
touring from a central base, then a smaller
vehicle may be adequate and easier for parking.
If doing longer travel, remember you will have
luggage to transport around as well as the
shopping, so a midsize to larger vehicle should
be considered. We suggest you book before
leaving home, as this will save you money and
ensure that you get the vehicle of your choice.

  • 5. 1 Contents Accommodation Ratings To assist with the selection of your accommodation, we have created our own rating system. Please note these gradings are a guide only and may alter throughout the year. A standard level of accommodation with a limited range of rooms and facilities. Rooms are clean with basic furnishings. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of rooms and facilities, with rooms furnished to a comfortable standard. Superior standard of accommodation with a wide range of rooms and facilities, and a higher standard of service. First Class accommodation with an excellent range of facilities and services. Accommodation in this rating is considered among the best in Hawai‘i. A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities for the accommodation falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite subjective and generally speaking, the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your travel consultant to ensure you get the accommodation to best suit your needs. When selecting your accommodation please note that the standard bedding configuration in Hawai‘i is two double beds, with a maximum of two children free using existing bedding. This can vary. Child Policy: Please note bedding configuration varies between properties and in some cases with different room types within a property. Some hotels also offer family bonuses and specials. Your travel consultant will help you choose the hotel to best suits you and your family’s needs. Price Indicator: The price is provided as a guide only. The actual price may differ to that indicated in this brochure due to currency fluctuations, special events, trade shows or peak periods. Your travel consultant will quote you the actual price at the time of booking. Per person pricing is based in New Zealand dollars. • 6. 2 You’ll see the best of Hawai‘i if you venture off the well-trodden path. A rental car is an absolute must. Maui’s Hana Highway boasts waterfalls and ocean views, as well as roadside shacks and the peaceful town of Hana; a sleepy nugget of unspoilt Hawai‘i, with nostalgic stores and locals with beautiful smiles. Many people have described Maui as ‘traditional Hawai‘i’ due to its misty mountains and historic towns, such as Paia, and Makawao which is also home to the Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy). In Kaua‘i, ditch the wheels and commandeer a kayak. Set off along the Wailua River and discover Napali Coast, or discover Waimea Canyon on Kaua‘i’s west side. Named “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, it’s enormous, rugged and more than 1098 metres deep; providing unprecedented views of Kaua‘i’s dramatic interior. Hawai‘i is a playground for active travellers and with warm, clear waters, it’s perfect for ocean lovers. Activities include snorkelling, diving, game-fishing and whale watching (between November and April). Over on O‘ahu’s North Shore, Waimea Bay is popular for its Waimea Bay Rock, a nine metre monster that daredevils choose to jump from. The North Shore is also a mecca for die-hard surf enthusiasts. In winter the waves are enormous and play host to the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, whereas in summer the waves are gentler and friendlier for everyone. For something a little more sedate, Sharks Cove, with its shallow tide pools is a fun-for-all family option. And on Maui, the island’s rugged terrain attracts all those who love volcano hikes, fresh water caves and rainforest walks. Island hopping Off the beaten track Get active 6 TIPSfor your Hawai‘i Holiday Hawai‘i is actually comprised of six very different islands. In beautiful Molokai you can explore the world’s tallest sea cliffs on a hot-hooved mule, while Hawai‘i Island boasts some of the most unique volcanic experiences in the world. For something really cool, head to the end of Highway 130 in the Puna District (on the coast at Kalapana) and hike to an area where lava from Kilauea Volcano flows into the sea. The viewing area is open daily from 3-9pm, but be aware that volcanic activity can change at any time. Experience the famed Hana Highway, a 104 kilometre route along Maui’s stunning coastline or try paddle boarding in Kaua‘i. Alternatively, stay on O‘ahu and venture one hour out of Waikiki to the North Shore. You’ll be greeted by a shoreline of fine-looking waves (and even finer looking surfers).
  • 7. 3 Take yourself to Hawai‘i Island for a manta ray dive. The mantas frequent the Kona Coast, notably the bay fronting Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa, and come nightfall boat tours, certified divers and snorkellers are all permitted to venture amongst them. Hawai‘i’s snorkelling is awesome and is always best in the morning, before the trade winds pick up. Maui’s a great place to take the plunge because it’s replete with bright coral, tropical fish and if you venture to Turtle Town, multiple sea turtles. Some of the top spots are the northern section of Ka‘anapali Beach near Black Rock, or the small island of Molokini, which is just southwest of Maui. Join a Molokini Snorkel Cruise for a fuss- free guide through coral and marine life. From November - April, you might also get to see whales. Discover authentic Hawaiian flavours loved by the residents. O‘ahu’s famed North Shore food trucks are always swarmed by locals and that’s because they’ve been a Hawaiian institution for decades. Look for Giovanni’s, one of the original (and best) food trucks in Hawai‘i. If you like raw fish, you’ll love Poké. Relatively similar to ceviche, it’s thick cubes of raw tuna marinated with soy and sesame… Ask for added avocado to make it extra delicious. When staying in Waikiki, The Shore Bird Restaurant allows guests to cook their own dinner at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach, while Leonard’s Bakery has been selling malasada since 1952. A malasada is a hole-less donut stuffed with custard (or chocolate) and dusted in sugar and cinnamon. It’s a crime to leave Hawai‘i without trying one. You’d be hard pushed to find a bad patch of sand in Hawai‘i. Many of the beaches are ranked in ‘Top Beaches’ categories, including the famous ‘Dr Beach’ list which named O‘ahu’s Haunama Bay as the best beach for 2016. Also on O‘ahu, is the platinum white Makapu’u Beach. Nestled in a cove-like bay and defined by its cascading drifts of sand. It’s an easy day jaunt from Waikiki, with a lighthouse to explore and convenient restroom facilities beside the beach. Kauna‘oa Bay on Hawai‘i Island boasts bluer-than-blue waters and is also known as Mauna Kea Beach for its nearby hotel of the same name. This spot is ideal for snorkellers, sunbathers and sandcastle makers alike. One of our favourite Hawaiian beaches resides on Maui. Offering a whopping five kilometres of white sand, Ka‘anapali Beach provides bountiful snorkelling opportunities, plentiful resorts and nearby golf courses. • 8. 4 Experience Hawai‘i As your plane begins its descent, you lean forward in your seat, hoping to catch a glimpse of the emerald and iconic volcanic peak known as Diamond Head, rearing out of the ocean and fringed with white sand. The moment you step off the plane you know you’ve arrived in the right place – the air is warm and has that languid feel that you only find in the tropics. Then, as if to reassure you further, you’re greeted, not by the usual nod from a customs official, but with a brilliant smile and a welcoming ‘aloha’. It’s a greeting you’ll hear a hundred times a day in Hawai‘i, and one which you’ll find yourself slipping into your own language as you melt into the rhythm of the islands. Hello, goodbye, peace, love and happiness – all sentiments that suit the Hawaiian lifestyle perfectly. With its Polynesian heritage, it’s easy to imagine that New Zealand would be like this if it had the good fortune to be dragged a few hundred miles closer to the equator. It’s the sort of destination that makes you want to try new things. Fancy learning to surf? You’ll find a beginner-sized wave somewhere on any given day, and there’s no shortage of patient instructors to get you up and riding. Or learn a new artform or custom from the Islands of Aloha. The friendly Hawaiian locals will be only too happy to share their stories and the strong spiritual connection between Hawai‘i and New Zealand. One thing is certain – on your last night, as you watch the sun sink into the Pacific, you’ll wish you could dally a little longer.
  • 9. 5 O’AHU 14 Our favourite things to see and do Waikiki Beach Walk® – Make sure you check out the art galleries and shops at the Waikiki Beach Walk®. Home to the famous Yard House where you can taste over 110 different types of beer. Waikiki Trolley – A fun way to see the sites. The red line is for the history buffs – explore 13 stops in historic Honolulu, take the green line for a scenic tour along the east coast of O‘ahu past Diamond Head and the pink line is for all the shopaholics. Ala Moana Shopping Centre – The world’s largest open- air shopping centre with over 320 shops. Here you’ll find Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Old Navy, GAP – the list goes on. Pearl Harbour – This is a must, a very moving tribute to those who lost their lives here on December 7th, 1941. North Shore – Head to the North Shore and check out all the surfing action at famous beaches such as Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach. Stop at the Aloha General Store – the birth place of Shave Ice and feast on fresh shrimp from one of the many shrimp trucks on the side of the road. Dining – There are so many amazing places to eat and drink in Waikiki. A few of our favourites are Roy’s, Bill’s Hawai‘i, The Pig & Lady and the always lively Duke’s. International Marketplace – Head to the re-designed International Marketplace with over 60 brand new stores and restaurants in the heart of Waikiki. The Grand Lanai offers seven signature restaurants unique to Waikiki. O‘ahu An old-fashioned trolley bus rumbles along streets fringed with palm trees. Beyond lies a white sandy beach where tourists relax. The surf is small but perfectly formed – just right for a morning surfing lesson. When you’re done, saunter barefoot to a breakfast of fresh pineapple, strong Kona coffee and a pastry, in anticipation of some serious shopping. Such are the highlights of Waikiki, but don’t be trapped by its charms – O‘ahu has so much more to offer beyond Honolulu. Hire a car and circle the island. On the east coast you’ll find soaring cliffs, talcum-powder beaches and a quieter way of life, the perfect foil to the fun and frivolity of Waikiki. The world- famous surf beaches of the North Shore are another highlight, and even if you’re not a surfer, Sunset Beach may be the world’s best spot to watch the sun go down.

Iao Valley State Park – A peaceful, lush area centring around Iao Needle, a towering black rock pinnacle soaring over 365 metres high. It’s best to go in the early morning and there are lots of great hikes from which to admire the area’s rich foliage, natural pools and scenic mountain views. Lahaina Historic Trail – Pick up a walking guide from the Lahaina Visitor Centre and explore Lahaina’s rich whaling and plantation history, as well as the historic court house, jail and banyan tree on a self-guided tour throughout Lahaina Town. Golf – There are many golf courses which will satisfy even the most demanding golfer. Courses are flanked by crashing waves and soaring hillsides with panoramic vistas and tropical landscapes. Road to Hana – With over 600 hairpin turns and 54 narrow bridges, the famous road to Hana is much less a thoroughfare as it is a life lesson. Slow down and enjoy the ride, there’s a surprise around every corner. Haleakala National Park – Rising more than 3000 metres from the sea, Haleakala is a dormant volcano and is one of Maui’s most memorable attractions. A sight not to be missed is watching the sunrise over the unusual lava forms. Don’t forget to rug up as it can be quite cool at the top of the mountain. On a clear morning you may even see the neighbouring islands of Hawai‘i, Lana‘i, Moloka‘i, O‘ahu and Kaho’olawe. KAHO’OLAWE MAUI 5 4 10 Maui On the west coast of Maui, there’s a pretty little town named Lahaina where you can while away the hours drinking cocktails and gazing out across the sea to the neighbouring islands of Lana‘i and Moloka‘i. Art galleries and restaurants now line the quaint main street where once whaling ship crews roamed. At the other end of the island is Hana, a small town whose main attraction is the journey itself with 104 kilometres of coastal road that incorporates 600 bends and 54 one lane bridges. Between the two is massive Haleakala, a volcano that forms more than 75% of the island, with spectacular sunrises and views. And dotted all around the island are the most beautiful beaches and bays, there are resort laden beaches, long white sand beaches, secluded rocky coves, beaches fronted by parks and picnic areas – you’re spoilt for choice.

  • 20. 16 Our favourite things to see and do Kilauea Lighthouse – Built in 1913 as a beacon for travelling ships, its light was turned off in the 1970s. The view of the rugged northern coastline and the deep-blue Pacific makes this the perfect spot for photos. Spouting Horn Blowhole – Located on Kaua‘i’s South Shore, it is quite spectacular and one of the most photographed spots. The Poipu surf channels into a natural lava tube here and releases a huge spout of water during large swells. Waimea Canyon – Stretching 22 kilometres long, 1.6 kilometres wide and more than 1100 metres deep, the Waimea Canyon Lookout provides panoramic views. There are numerous trails to traverse for beginners and seasoned hikers. Napali Coast – The only land access to this enchanted area is via the Kalalau Trail, an 18 kilometre trail that starts at Kee Beach, crosses five different valleys and ends at secluded Kalalau Beach. If you don’t feel like walking, take a cruise for some unforgettable scenery. Fern Grotto – On Kaua‘i’s east side, accessible only by a short boat trip up the Wailua River, the grotto is natural lava-rock, lush with hanging ferns and tropical foliage, cooled by the mists of a waterfall. There was a time when the grotto was off-limits to all but Hawaiian royalty, but for more than 50 years, riverboats have provided tours of the site. Dining – With everything from fine dining to food trucks, you’ll find something on Kaua‘i to suit your palate. Tahiti Nui in Hanalei and Keoki’s Paradise in Poipu are two not to be missed. Both offer fresh seafood and live entertainment just about every night. KAUA‘I 1 3 25 4 6 Po’ipu Beach Park Kaua‘i They call Kaua‘i the ‘Garden Isle’, but it’s like no garden you’ve ever seen before. Its mountaintops trap the rainclouds that roll in off the Pacific, so its peaks and valleys are draped with lush vegetation. Geologically it’s the oldest of the four main islands of Hawai‘i, so it’s had plenty of time to develop some spectacular scenery. Mark Twain described Waimea Canyon as the ‘Grand Canyon of the Pacific’, while another highlight is the Napali Coast, where sheer cliffs rise thousands of feet straight out of the ocean. This coast is only accessible by hiking, boat or helicopter, but it’s well worth the effort. Of course, you don’t have to travel so extravagantly to appreciate Kaua‘i’s wonders – hire a bicycle from Kapa’a and cruise the cycle path that follows the coast for several kilometres. You’ll find your own patch of paradise.

And if you’re staying at the property watch them from the shoreline in the evening or head out on a short boat ride to learn more about them. Hawai‘i Island Volcanoes National Park on the island of Hawai‘i (known as the Big Island), is one of the few places where you can actually see new land being created as molten lava plunges into the sea. The sudden meeting of hot rock and cool water creates a vast steam cloud that can be seen from miles away, but to see it after dark is even more impressive, glowing red against the black lava field and night sky. Volcanoes aren’t the only reason to visit the island of Hawai‘i however. On the west coast is Kona, a cute little waterfront town that today is famous for its coffee and World Ironman championship. Great men have walked this land – this was the last royal residence of King Kamehameha the Great, while nearby Kealakekua Bay is where Captain Cook first set foot on the island and where he was later killed. 2 1 4 3 5 6 HAWAI‘I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK HAWAI`I ISLAND
