Differentiation by outcome. Open interaction – students must ask questions. Other two types, students are not required to ask questions. They are judged on how they respond to questions if they do not ask.
Students do not have to make an initial presentation. The picture is a starting point for a discussion.Schools may provide the pictures.Students are not required to ask questions; they are assessed on how they answer.
Students have a picture only – NO QUESTIONS as they prepare for the task. Bullets in English – must be an unpredictable element.
Grade C and above target: open ended task allowing for creativity and initiative. Tasks CAN be in the target language.Differentiate down by asking shorter, more precise questions.
Students HAVE TO give a presentation, then answer questions from the teacher. They do not have to ask questions.Preparation from bullet points.
Essentially this is an unscripted role-play.Students MUST ask questions.Stimulus may be either in English or the target language.Bullets make it more structured for those needing direction.
Situation can be formal / informal / transactional.Centres can devise their own (as with all assessment types). It is not a requirement for tasks to be approved by Edexcel, but ‘ask the expert’ is probably a good idea.
Teacher questioning must relate to what the student says.Resources are available on the website.QCA requires tasks to be ‘refreshed’ every two years (whether written by Edexcel or centres).
Page 9 of spec – list of themes and possible related content, NOT an exhaustive list.Page 10 for topics required to be covered for listening and reading.
Focussing closely on one theme allows centres to promote depth of language learning rather than superficial coverage.
Pathways – not themes. School and environmental issues are popular.
Can assess when appropriate and practical. Can teach and assess immediately. One of the two assessments must be recorded.Ideally conduct 3 assessments and put in the best 2.Only 2 opportunities to submit marks: May 15th 2010 and Jan 10th 2011 .
Listening and reading – Summer only.Externally assessed and marked.Marks and recordings to be securely stored.January entry leads to March results. The deadline to re-sit in June is around 21st March. Both tasks must be new for re-sits.
Teacher allows candidates access to the tasks. For the presentation, the teacher may give the title, or the candidate may suggest the title. Picture based discussion – candidate chooses. Teacher may provide choice or candidate may bring own picture. There follows a maximum of 6 hours guided learning over a maximum of two weeks. Teacher supervises. Teacher can clarify and remind about content and language requirements but cannot give a specific list. Task cannot be set as homework. Copy of the stimulus may be taken home. Notes CAN now be taken home. Feedback form available online.
Student notes may be a mind-map, 5 pictures or up to 30 words. Form available online for this – must be submitted to Edexcel with tasks. These notes may be taken into the assessment by students, but they should not have whole sentences or codes. There is no preparation time for candidates, but teacher assessment time should be built into the schedule and the tasks should be marked there and then.Page 95 of spec – mark sheet for each candidate and authentification certificate. Both teacher and candidate sign.
Must submit examples of each type of task conducted in centres. Can test in a class or in a separate room. If in class, display likely to assist the candidate must be covered up or removed.60% - communication20% - range 20% - accuracyGrade C descriptor – MAY relate to past and future. Grade A – VARIETY of vocab, structures and verb tenses.
Edexcel will continue to accept tapes for the first two years. After that, recordings will have to be submitted on CD or MP3.
All teachers teaching GCSE should take part in internal moderation.
