If you’ve been charged with the task of selecting your organization’s floor care
products and accessories, you might be wondering why picking the “right” mop is
such a big deal. Here are just a few reasons it’s wise to do your homework before
rushing into a decision:
Cleanliness
Not all mops are created equal, and not all of them
offer equal floor coverage or leave a lint-free shine.
Ease of Use
Some mops clean up quicker, are easier to handle, and easier to maintain...
but your choice will vary depending on your particular needs.
Value
Stay with us here, but you might find that often, the cheapest mop is not
the cheapest. Wondering how that works? We’ll lay it out for you here.
Safety
We know that you cannot and will not compromise the safety
of your employees, clients or guests. There are a variety of
mops and mopping systems that help keep your spaces safe
and free of fall risks.

quickly become overwhelming. Luckily, at HP Products, we’re

the information.
3. Fiber Selection
When you’re ready to look for the perfect mop, the first question to ask yourself is
what type of yarn or fabric is right for you? Here’s a look at the options:
Cotton
Think of this as the gateway fiber. It’s an
easy choice for beginners, those looking
for simplicity, or those with a smaller startup
budget. Cotton mops are lightweight,
absorbent and inexpensive, and can be used
disposably for easy cleanup and sanitation.
Cons: There are many more absorbent mops out
there, plus cotton mops typically leave behind a mod-
erate to significant amount of lint, which can leave
surfaces looking less than sparkling. And while they
are certainly cheap, they are not launderable, so you
can’t get much use out of each one.
Blends
Sometimes considered the best of all worlds,
the blended fiber mop combines cotton,
rayon and other materials. This combination
maximizes results and delivers great
absorbency, performance and value.
Cons: Just like rayon mops, blends will be pricier than
cotton, and because they are meant to be laundered
and reused, will involve some upkeep.
Rayon
These mops are generally much more
absorbent than their cotton cousins, and
they typically don’t leave behind as much
of a lint trail. They are pricier, but have the
benefit of being launderable and reusable.
Cons: A downside to launderable mops is that there
is some extra maintenance involved. Someone has to
wash all of those mop heads!
Microfiber
These small fibers carry a big impact.
Microfiber mops excel in absorbency and
performance, and are a top pick due to their
ability to attract, grab and trap particles of
dirt. They also use significantly less water and
chemicals than traditional mops – making
them lighter, easier and safer to use.
Cons: Performance-wise, you can’t get much better
than a microfiber mop. But, there is a downside – the
high performance also carries a higher price tag. How-
ever, you might find the added durability and extended
life of the microfiber mop makes it worth the cost.
4. Construction Considerations
Anatomy of a Mop
Cut End
This entry-level mop is
generally made of cotton,
and is best for single-use
applications. Performance
is less than with a more
expensive mop, but it’s
simple and easy to use, and
sanitary because it doesn’t
involve laundering or reusing.
The downside of this type of
mop is that it often leaves
gaps in the coverage.
Flat Mop
Many times, flat mops use
microfiber pads that are
highly effective and easy
on water and chemical
usage. They also cover
a much larger surface
area with no gaps, and
are ergonomic and easy
to maneuver.
Looped End
Mop heads with looped ends
provide some big benefits,
most noticeably in the
reduction of coverage gaps
and lint trails. Looped ends
also increase absorbency
and durability. They can
usually be washed, so they
have a longer life.
Mop fiber and construction go hand in hand, and you can’t choose one without ana-
lyzing the other. From the very basic to the best in the market, there are a number of
factors to think about when choosing the way your mop is made.
Headband
More than a hair accessory, the headband
of a mop comes in different widths to
securely hold the mop to the handle.
Color
Color coded mops help users to quickly
identify which mop they need, and prevent
cross-contamination between areas.
Tailband
The tailband offers the mopper more
control, and flares the fibers for a wider
cleaning path and quicker passes.
5. Size Matters
Ready to browse for the right mop
and make your decision?
The size of both the mop head and the wringer should match the size of the user,
so consider that when choosing your products. A few tips to keep in mind:
