The average L&D organization spends $18,000 to produce one hour of content. Within a short time period, the value of this content depreciates as the subject matter becomes inaccurate, designs become dated, or technology advancements make the content completely inaccessible with current tools.
Attend our webinar, “The 5 Steps to Breathing Life Back into Stale Content!”, to learn how to maximize your training ROI and start developing a strategy for revitalizing legacy content and preparing content for future usability.
As a gift for attending the webinar, InfoPro Learning will deliver a free Content Asset Repository Worksheet, which your team can use to easily catalog learning assets (the first step in content modernization).

11. Modernizing Legacy Content
Modernize programs increase
ROI and Engagement
With significant investments in content development, companies should
search for ways to re-purpose content across various learning programs.
Not only will this increase the ROI, but it will also help increase
engagement by modernizing the look and feel of courses to match the
changes in learner demographics.
12. Should I modernize?
1. How much content do I have (Content Inventory)?

2. What have I spent on those (investment $$)?

16. 5 Steps of Modernization for Engagement
1. Define the project
17. Step 1: Define the project
Scope, Speed, and Success
Scope
You need to define how much
content you want to modernize
before you begin working.
Speed
It is imperative you set a quick,
and strict, pace for delivery.
Nothing kills a modernization
project more than long delays
midstream.
Success
Forecast results for the
modernization effort, from a
business, learner, and L&D
perspective.
18. Step 1: Define the project
Important Considerations
Budget constraints
Although modernization efforts save money in the long-
term, there is an initial capital expenditure required. The
amount of money you secure will determine how much
content you can take on.
Skills gaps
Modernizing content requires modern skills and it is
important to understand what gaps may exist in your team
ahead of time, so you can either outsource those, or look
for help from a different department.
Technology limitations
Bring your IT team, along with any L&D product owners,
into the conversation early. You want to define any
limitations created by tools, security, or devices well ahead
of time.
19. 5 Steps of Modernization for Engagement
1. Define the project
2. Inventory Content
20. Poll Question:
How often do you perform a
review of your training content?
a. More than once a year
b. Every year
c. 2-3 years
d. Trigger driven (no scheduled
timeline)
21. Step 2: Inventory Content
Create an Asset Capture Form
• Capture as much USEFUL
information that is READILY
available
• Include various stakeholders
in the production of the asset
capture form
• Dedicate 2-4 weeks for this
process.
• FREE FORM available to all
attendees

22. 5 Steps of Modernization for Engagement
1. Define the project
2. Inventory Content
3. Analyze Results
23. Step 3: Analyze
Categorize Content
Technology Changes
Highly dependent on the learner demographics, but
consider this, over 50% of traffic is on a mobile device,
while only 2% of training content is made for said devices.
Content Changes
Inaccuracies in content is a key factor in employees losing
interest in your training. Finding all content changes can
be time consuming, so we recommend only reviewing
content that is older than 2 years.
Design Changes
You know an engaging design when you see it and many
times, simply viewing the splash screen will tell you all you
need to know.
24. Step 3: Analyze
Evaluate Learner Demographics
Baby-boomers/ GenX/ GenY/
Millennial
The content and its treatment is heavily dependent on the
learner profile.
Office Workers/ Road-Warriors/
Factory Line
The workplace of the learner is a key deciding factor in
how and where they want their learning
High Churn/ High Regulation/
Compliance
Content depth, accessibility, and evaluation patterns will
be key considerations
25. Step 3: Analyze
Create a long-term update plan
1-3 Years 3-5 Years 5-9 Years
Learning courses less
than three years only
needs to be updated for
content inaccuracies.
These naturally occur
over time, as the
company pivots to react
to market changes.
Courses need to be tested
for adaption to new
technologies.
Course design needs
reviewed to ensure they
match the current design and
usability standards.
Most courses will be close to
expired at this point.
Evergreen content should be
captured and re-
implemented in newer
design templates.
Content that still is relevant
should be checked yearly to
ensure they are accessible
by learners, easily (flash).
26. 5 Steps of Modernization for Engagement
1. Define the project
2. Inventory Content
3. Analyze Results
4. Develop
27. Step 4: Develop
Creating Scalable
Process
Create design templates for various
forms of media to decrease
production costs, while creating a
strong brand image. 2-3 templates
should be created for each device
(phone, tablet, computer).
Design Templates
28. Step 4: Develop
Make Content
Discoverable
Too often enough, learners are
disengaged because they can’t find
answers to their specific questions.
Creating a strict meta-tagging
policy also helps with future
modernization because the L&D
team can recycle content already
created.
Meta-tagging
29. Step 4: Develop
Maximize Engagement
Create multiple versions of
your design templates to test
with a small team, before
embarking on the large-scale
implementation.
A/B test design templates
30. Step 4: Develop
Perfect your content
Ensure your SMEs are actively
engaged by creating a
documentation process that
notify who and when content
has been approved for
release.
Make SME own content approval
Avoid using terms that specify
dates, i.e. last year, as they
constantly require updates.
Also, use timeless examples
instead of current events, as
it’s impossible to tell when a
current event will fade.
Define content standards
31. 5 Steps of Modernization for Engagement
1. Define the project
2. Inventory Content
3. Analyze Results
4. Develop
5. Deploy
32. Step 5: Deploy
Tools for Deployment
Learning Content Management
Unless you authored courses in your LCMS, you will
need to upload content into the LCMS and
appropriately tag it. It is important to check with your
LCMS owner ahead of time to ensure you are
producing content that can be consumed by your
LCMS
Learning Management System
For best results, your LMS should directly connect to
your LCMS, which contains all meta-data about your
courses. If it isn’t connected, or no LCMS is present,
many LMS platforms allow you to do some level of
content tagging at a course level, which greatly
increase searchability.
33. Step 5: Deploy
Key Considerations
Security
Ensure you are not allowing access to
content from devices or locations that are
not defined in your company policy. Same
goes with local storage of content on remote
devices.
Mobile viewing
Not all content should be delivered to mobile
devices. In many cases, if learners can
consume desktop courses on a mobile
device, they will leave immediately due to
poor usability.
Don’t be shy
Learners want access to content. Try
delivering it to them in many ways to
determine what works best. For example,
why not try texting your learners a link to a
course instead of emailing? These alerts
are easy enough to ignore, that your
learners will not feel overwhelmed.
Test and Pilot
If content is accessible on a device, you
need to test the learner experience on that
device. If budget or time prevents, focus on
the most popular devices and then review
performance on non-tested devices once it
is live.
34. Poll Question: Of the 5 steps
mentioned, which one will be the
most challenging for you to
implement?
1. Define the project
2. Inventory Content
3. Analyze Results
4. Develop
5. Deploy
