The document specifies requirements for a point integrating bottle suspended sediment sampler. The sampler is designed to manually take integrated samples in rivers, canals, and reservoirs. It must have a streamlined body with no protruding parts besides those for taking samples. A wading rod is also specified to hold the sampler at the required sampling depth underwater. Technical specifications include a maximum water velocity and depth of operation, manual operation, and maximum weight.
1. 20.002 POINT INTEGRATING BOTTLE
Approval Date: 20 May 1998
Reviewed on : 23 October 2007 Version: 1
Equipment Specification: POINT INTEGRATING BOTTLE Version 1 20.002-1/2
Purpose
The suspended sediment sampler is for manually taking of point integrated samples in rivers,
canals and reservoirs.
Introduction
The bottle sampler is a point-integrating device. The current practice in most states of the
Indian Peninsula is to use the “Punjab” bottle sampler for measuring suspended load. The
sampler is designed for rivers with suspended load almost exclusively composed of wash
load, with no or little coarse and medium particle size fractions. The measurement procedure
with this instrument is described in several documents, though no real standard procedure
seems to be adopted. There are no clear or uniform guidelines for adopting one or another
procedure on the basis of the flow and the sediment characteristics of the river at the
measurement section.
Conditions & Requirements
• The sampler shall have a streamlined body.
• No bolts or other parts, other then for taking the sample, shall protrude from the body.
• The sample shall remain intact while hoisting the sampler.
• The sampler shall have a well established and proven correction factor.
• Spares and tools required for routine maintenance shall be part of the delivery.
• The standard list of spare parts needed for one year operation shall be listed and
quotation given.
A wading rod, designed to hold the hand-held sampler at the required sampling depth.
Specifications
water velocity up to 1.5 m/s
water depth up to 2.5 m
operation manually
unmeasured depth 0.10 m maximum sampling distance from the bottom
mass (without sample) 5 kg max
Wading rod
purpose to submerse the sampler to the required depth
diameter 0.02 to 0.03 m
length 2.5 m
container holder at lower end
Cork
control by handgrip
Features
• Rigid sample container, easily replaceable
