2. The 7 Needs
1. Room to grow
2. Temperature
3. Light
4. Water
5. Air
6. Nutrients
7. Time
3. First Need-Room to Grow
Plants like room to grow. The part of the plant above
the ground needs space for the leaves to expand and
carry out the job of making food. The roots also need
room. If they get crowded together, it results in smaller
amounts of growth.
4. 2nd Need-Temperature
Most plants are like humans when it comes to
temperature. Some plants like warmer climates while
other like cooler ones. It is always good to know where
a plant came from so you can give the best conditions
for best growth.
5. 3rd--Light
Plant grown indoors like bright light. Try to place the
plant by a window facing the south or west to get the
best light. When a plant is getting to much light its stem
will lean and grow towards the light. If you don’t have
have a window try using a grow light.
6. 4th--Water
It is essential for a plant to receive the right amount of
water. If u give the plant too much or too little water, the
plant will die. Before purchasing the plant, make sure
and research how much water it will need. The required
amount of water varies from plant to plant. The plant
also uses water to make simple sugars and to gather
more sunlight.
7. 5th--Air
Plants use carbon dioxide in the air and return oxygen
in a process called photosynthesis. The plants make
sugars from carbon dioxide in the air and use the
sugars for more energy. Smoke, gases, and other
pollutants can damage the plants.
8. 6th--Nutrients
Most of the nutrients that a plant needs are dissolved in
water and then taken up by the plants through the
roots. Fertilizer helps keep nutrients in the soil. The
three most important nutrients are nitrogen,
phosphorous, and potassium.
9. 7th--Time
Some plants require more time to grow than others.
Plants that grow outdoors need a certain to flower or
fruit than others. The cells in the plant must have
enough time to grow and multiply for the plant to reach
full maturity.
