Importance of motivation

Motivation is the core of the management. It is important factor in determining the efficiency of the
organization. There was a time when human recourse where treated as non human recourses but time
has changed now. By leaving the traditional system of management behind and following the scientific
system of management importance of human resource has increased. The importance or need of
motivation can better be cleared from the following facts:

   1) High level of performance: It has been proved by many researchers that motivation is directly
proportional to the performance. The ability to do work and willingness to do work both affect
the efficiency of the work. The ability to do work is obtained with education and training and
willingness to do work is obtained with help of motivation. The efficiency of the motivated
employ is more than the unmotivated one. It is important to achieve high level of efficiency of
the organization and this can only be achieved by motivation. Many researchers have proved
high degree of positive correlation between motivation and efficiency. For e.g. A person is
educated and he is recruited for a job on this very basis. But this is not essential that he will be
doing outstanding work. He shall have to be motivated to do good job. Motivation increases
efficiency. The efficiency of the person is reflected through increase in productivity and
decreases in cost hence the performance.

   2) Low employee turnover and absenteeism: The goodwill of the enterprise is adversely affected
by the high level of employee turnover and absenteeism. This creates many problems for the
managers. The problem of appointing the people time and again, arranging for their education
& training etc. lead to wastage of time as well as money. Only motivation can save this wastage
for the organization. Motivated people work for the longer period in the enterprise and their
rate of absenteeism is also less.

   3) Helps to change negative or indifferent attitudes of employees: Some of the employees of the
organization have negative attitude. They always think that doing more work will not bring any
credit. Motivation can only bring the change. Motivate the employee by praising his work.

   4) Easy acceptance in organizational change: Changes continue taking place in the organization.
Generally the employees do not accept to the method in their work performance they are
accustomed to. These changes can be made accepted only through motivation. Motivated
people are accepting them enthusiastically and perform their work.

   5) Good relation with owner and employee: High level of motivation develops sweet relation
among the appointers and the employees. Motivation fills the employs with enthusiasm and
they start accepting the orders and information willingly. Thus motivation also makes great
contribution in developing good human relationship.
6) Good image of the organization: Where the employees are motivated with proper method by
satisfying the needs, a good image on the enterprise is created in the mind of public.

7) Increase in morale: High level motivation increases the morale of the employees and they face
challenges, and in case of need are not afraid of taking bold decisions.

8) Proper use of human resource: The success or failure of the organization depends upon the
proper use of the resource. Its proper use can be made by various type of motivation. Motivated
employs work at their fully capability and their aim is the achievement of the objective of
   organization.
           Types of motivation:

                   a) Incentives: A form of motivation that involves rewards, both monetary and
nonmonetary is often called incentive motivation. Many people are driven
by the knowledge that they will be rewarded in some manner for achieving
a certain target or goal. Bonuses and promotions are good examples of the
type of incentives that are used for motivation.

                   b) Fear: Fear motivation involves consequences. This type of motivation is
often one that is utilized when incentive motivation fails. In a business style
of motivation often referred to as the, “carrot and stick,” incentive is the
carrot and fear is the stick.

Punishment or negative consequences are a form of fear motivation. This
type of motivation is commonly used to motivate students in the education
system and also frequently in a professional setting to motivate employees.
If we break the rules or fail to achieve the set goal, we are penalized in some
                       way.

                   c) Achievement: Achievement motivation is also commonly referred to as the
drive for competency. We are driven to achieve goals and tackle new
challenges. We desire to improve skills and prove our competency both to
others and to ourselves. Generally, this feeling of accomplishment and
                       achievement is intrinsic in nature.

However, in certain circumstances be motivation for achievement may
involve external recognition. We often have a desire or need to receive
positive feedback from both our peers and our superiors. This may include
anything from an award to a simple pat on the back for a job well done.

                      d) Growth: The need for self-improvement is truly an internal motivation. A
burning desire to increase our knowledge of ourselves and of the outside
world can be a very strong form of motivation. We seek to learn and grow
                         as individuals.
Motivation for growth can also be seen in our yearning for change. Many of
us are wired by our personality or upbringing to constantly seek a change in
either our external or internal environment or knowledge. We view
stagnation to be both negative and undesirable.
                      e) Power: The motivation of power can either take the form of a desire for
autonomy or other desire to control others around us. We want to have
choices and control over our own lives. We strive for the ability to direct the
manner in which we live now and the way our lives will unfold in the future.
We also often aspire to control others around us. The desire for control is
stronger in some people than others. In some cases, the craving for power
induces people to harmful, immoral, or illegal behavior. In other situations,
the longing for power is merely a desire to affect the behavior of others. We
simply want people to do what we want, according to our timetable, and
the way we want it done.
                      f) Social: Many people are motivated by social factors. This may be a
desire to belong and to be accepted by a specific peer group or a
desire to relate to the people in our sphere or in the larger world.
We have an innate need to feel a connection with others. We also
have the need for acceptance and affiliation.
A genuine and passionate desire to contribute and to make a
difference in the lives of others can be another form of social
motivation. If we have a longing to make a contribution to the world
around us, it is generally a sign that we are motivated by social
                         factors.

The real importance of understanding the different types of motivation is in our ability to
determine which form of motivation is the most effective for inspiring the desired behavior in
either others or ourselves. None of these styles of motivation is inherently good or bad, the
positive or negative outcome is truly determined by the way they are used.
9) Helping in achieving goals: The employee have to be shown the right way in order to achieve
the predetermined goal of any organization through their medium. This aim can only be
achieved through the weapon of motivation. Without motivation the achievement of goals is
just a dream. Motivation is essential to realize this dream.

    10) Builds good relation among employees: Since most of the needs of the motivated people are
satisfied through the behavior assume calmness. All the employees working in such an
environment develops sense on cooperation with each other. There is no conflict among them
and there is no hindrance in their work performance.

To conclude we can say that managers strive to motivate people in the organization to perform at high
levels. This means getting them to work hard, to come to work regularly and to make positive
contribution towards the organization mission.

Role of motivation in performance can also be given as follow:

Performance = (motivation x ability)-situational constraints

Situation constraints: stress or difficult working conditions

To sum up, to achieve the organizational goals and individual goals in an efficient manner, motivation is
an important technique in the hands of managers.

  • 1. Importance of Motivation By Sandeep Singh 1st sem MHA Guru Nank Dev University iamsinghsandeep@gmail.com http://iamsinghsandeep.blogspot.in/
  • 2. Importance of motivation Motivation is the core of the management. It is important factor in determining the efficiency of the organization. There was a time when human recourse where treated as non human recourses but time has changed now. By leaving the traditional system of management behind and following the scientific system of management importance of human resource has increased. The importance or need of motivation can better be cleared from the following facts: 1) High level of performance: It has been proved by many researchers that motivation is directly proportional to the performance. The ability to do work and willingness to do work both affect the efficiency of the work. The ability to do work is obtained with education and training and willingness to do work is obtained with help of motivation. The efficiency of the motivated employ is more than the unmotivated one. It is important to achieve high level of efficiency of the organization and this can only be achieved by motivation. Many researchers have proved high degree of positive correlation between motivation and efficiency. For e.g. A person is educated and he is recruited for a job on this very basis. But this is not essential that he will be doing outstanding work. He shall have to be motivated to do good job. Motivation increases efficiency. The efficiency of the person is reflected through increase in productivity and decreases in cost hence the performance. 2) Low employee turnover and absenteeism: The goodwill of the enterprise is adversely affected by the high level of employee turnover and absenteeism. This creates many problems for the managers. The problem of appointing the people time and again, arranging for their education & training etc. lead to wastage of time as well as money. Only motivation can save this wastage for the organization. Motivated people work for the longer period in the enterprise and their rate of absenteeism is also less. 3) Helps to change negative or indifferent attitudes of employees: Some of the employees of the organization have negative attitude. They always think that doing more work will not bring any credit. Motivation can only bring the change. Motivate the employee by praising his work. 4) Easy acceptance in organizational change: Changes continue taking place in the organization. Generally the employees do not accept to the method in their work performance they are accustomed to. These changes can be made accepted only through motivation. Motivated people are accepting them enthusiastically and perform their work. 5) Good relation with owner and employee: High level of motivation develops sweet relation among the appointers and the employees. Motivation fills the employs with enthusiasm and they start accepting the orders and information willingly. Thus motivation also makes great contribution in developing good human relationship.
  • 3. 6) Good image of the organization: Where the employees are motivated with proper method by satisfying the needs, a good image on the enterprise is created in the mind of public. 7) Increase in morale: High level motivation increases the morale of the employees and they face challenges, and in case of need are not afraid of taking bold decisions. 8) Proper use of human resource: The success or failure of the organization depends upon the proper use of the resource. Its proper use can be made by various type of motivation. Motivated employs work at their fully capability and their aim is the achievement of the objective of organization. Types of motivation: a) Incentives: A form of motivation that involves rewards, both monetary and nonmonetary is often called incentive motivation. Many people are driven by the knowledge that they will be rewarded in some manner for achieving a certain target or goal. Bonuses and promotions are good examples of the type of incentives that are used for motivation. b) Fear: Fear motivation involves consequences. This type of motivation is often one that is utilized when incentive motivation fails. In a business style of motivation often referred to as the, “carrot and stick,” incentive is the carrot and fear is the stick. Punishment or negative consequences are a form of fear motivation. This type of motivation is commonly used to motivate students in the education system and also frequently in a professional setting to motivate employees. If we break the rules or fail to achieve the set goal, we are penalized in some way. c) Achievement: Achievement motivation is also commonly referred to as the drive for competency. We are driven to achieve goals and tackle new challenges. We desire to improve skills and prove our competency both to others and to ourselves. Generally, this feeling of accomplishment and achievement is intrinsic in nature. However, in certain circumstances be motivation for achievement may involve external recognition. We often have a desire or need to receive
  • 4. positive feedback from both our peers and our superiors. This may include anything from an award to a simple pat on the back for a job well done. d) Growth: The need for self-improvement is truly an internal motivation. A burning desire to increase our knowledge of ourselves and of the outside world can be a very strong form of motivation. We seek to learn and grow as individuals. Motivation for growth can also be seen in our yearning for change. Many of us are wired by our personality or upbringing to constantly seek a change in either our external or internal environment or knowledge. We view stagnation to be both negative and undesirable. e) Power: The motivation of power can either take the form of a desire for autonomy or other desire to control others around us. We want to have choices and control over our own lives. We strive for the ability to direct the manner in which we live now and the way our lives will unfold in the future. We also often aspire to control others around us. The desire for control is stronger in some people than others. In some cases, the craving for power induces people to harmful, immoral, or illegal behavior. In other situations, the longing for power is merely a desire to affect the behavior of others. We simply want people to do what we want, according to our timetable, and the way we want it done. f) Social: Many people are motivated by social factors. This may be a desire to belong and to be accepted by a specific peer group or a desire to relate to the people in our sphere or in the larger world. We have an innate need to feel a connection with others. We also have the need for acceptance and affiliation. A genuine and passionate desire to contribute and to make a difference in the lives of others can be another form of social motivation. If we have a longing to make a contribution to the world around us, it is generally a sign that we are motivated by social factors. The real importance of understanding the different types of motivation is in our ability to determine which form of motivation is the most effective for inspiring the desired behavior in either others or ourselves. None of these styles of motivation is inherently good or bad, the positive or negative outcome is truly determined by the way they are used.
  • 5. 9) Helping in achieving goals: The employee have to be shown the right way in order to achieve the predetermined goal of any organization through their medium. This aim can only be achieved through the weapon of motivation. Without motivation the achievement of goals is just a dream. Motivation is essential to realize this dream. 10) Builds good relation among employees: Since most of the needs of the motivated people are satisfied through the behavior assume calmness. All the employees working in such an environment develops sense on cooperation with each other. There is no conflict among them and there is no hindrance in their work performance. To conclude we can say that managers strive to motivate people in the organization to perform at high levels. This means getting them to work hard, to come to work regularly and to make positive contribution towards the organization mission. Role of motivation in performance can also be given as follow: Performance = (motivation x ability)-situational constraints Situation constraints: stress or difficult working conditions To sum up, to achieve the organizational goals and individual goals in an efficient manner, motivation is an important technique in the hands of managers.
