OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the learners should
be able to:
○ Identify traditional media and new media
and their relationships;
○ Editorialize the roles and functions of
media in democratic society and;
○ Identify the latest theory on information
and media.

1. Petroglyphs
 are illustrations created by abolishing part
of a rock surface by incising or carving, as
a form of rock art.
 From the Greek word “petro” meaning
stone and “glypho” meaning carve.

2. Cave Paintings (aka “parietal art”)
 are painted drawings on cave walls or
ceiling, mainly of prehistoric descent in
both Asia and Europe
 wild animals, such as bison, horses,
aurochs, and deer, and tracings of human
hands as well as abstract patterns.
 David Lewis-Williams states that the
paintings were made by Paleolithic

3. Dance
 Dancing before the God was fundamental in
temple rituals.
 Important part of the oral and performance
approaches of passing stories down from
generation to generation.

4. Body Art
 Is a momentous part of social, spiritual and
personal expression.
 Body painting was temporary, painted in
the human skin and lasted for one day or at
most couple of weeks.
 Tattoo, piercing, nose-ears-mouth plugs,
Mehndi, henna and scarification are other
ritual-based art forms.

schemes of writing, identified by its

Egyptians that combined anagrammed
and alphabetic elements.

2. Alphabet
a. Phoenician Alphabet- called by the
tradition the Pro-Canaanite alphabet
 Oldest confirmed Alphabet
 Contains 22 letters, all of which are
consonants.
 Acquired from Egyptians hieroglyphs and
became one of the most extensively used
writing system.

3. Drama
 Is the clear-cut mode of narrative, commonly
fictional, served in performance.
 Western drama comes from classical Greece
 Theatrical culture of the city-state of Athens
generated from three genres of drama: tragedy,
comedy, and satyr play.
 5th century BCE they were regulated in competitions
held as part of festivities celebrating the God
Dionysus

4. Paper- grammatically derived from papyros, Ancient
Greek for Cyperus papyrus plant.
 Is a chunky, paper like matter produced from the core
of Cyperus papyrus plant which was used in ancient
Egypt and other Mediterrannean cultures for writing
ways before the paper making in China.

Industrial Era (1440-1890)
1. Printing Press- is an apparatus for
administering pressure to an inked
surface recessing upon a print medium
(such as paper and cloth), thereby
transferring ink.
 Invented by Johannes Gutenberg around
1440 .

 Invented by Richard Leach Maddox in
1871
 Also known as gelatin process improved

3. Telegraphy- is the long-distance broadcast
of textual or symbolic messages.
 Technique used for encoding the message be known to both
sender and receiver.
 Electric Telegraph- invented by Samuel Morse in 1837. His
assistant Alfred Vail, developed the Morse code signaling
alphabet with Morse.
 January 11, 1838 the first telegram was sent by Morse.

4. Telephone – is a telecommunications
device that allows many users to administer
a conversation when they are too far apart to
be heard.
 Invented by Alexander Graham Bell in
1876

5. Phonograph- is a device designed for the
power-driven recording and reproduction of
sound.
 Invented in 1877 by Thomas Edison
 It was also called “Gramophone”
 The sound waveforms are recorded as
conforming physical deviations of a
spiral groove engraved into the surface
of spinning disc, called a “record”.

6. Film- is a series of immobile images that,
when shown on a screen, generates the
illusion of moving images.
 Also called movie, motion picture,
theatrical film or photoplay.
 History of film started in the 1890s, when
motion picture camera were invented and
film production companies started to be
recognized.

1. Radio- is the technology of using radio
waves to convey information such as
sound, by modulating some property of
electro-magnetic energy waves
transferred through space.
 Invented by Guglielmo Marconi in 1901
 First radio broadcast ever in the world’s
history was made by Reginald Fessenden€
on Christmas Eve 1906.

2. Television- is a telecommunication
medium used for transmitting sound with
moving pictures in monochrome, or in color,
and in two or three dimensions.
 It is a mass medium, for entertainment,
education, news, and advertising.
 It became obtainable in basic
experimental forms in the late 1920s

3. Personal Computer- is a general-purpose
computer. It is an electronic machine that
accepts information ( Data ), processes it
according to specific instructions, and
provides the results as new information.

4. Mobile Phone- is a portable which can
produce and receive calls over the radio
frequency carrier.
 In 1973, the first handheld mobile phone
was invented by John F. Mitchell and
Martin Cooper of Motorola.
 In 1983, the DynTAC 8000x was the first
commercially available handheld mobile
phone.

5. Internet- is the worldwide system of
unified computer networks that use the
Internet Protocol suite (TCP/IP) that links
billions of devices across the planet.
 It uses are to access news reports, to plan
and book vacations and to pursue their
interest, also to chat, message and e-mail
in order to stay in touch with friends
globally.

Task
○ Draw on a short bond paper a
cartoon depicting your own
opinion about the future of media.
○ Explain the message of your
cartoon in not less than three
sentences.
○ Ask the learners this question: Given the
available media that we have in the world
now, what do you think is the future of
media? Is there a technology that you have
seen in a science-fiction film or read in a
book that you want to become a reality in
the near future?
