This slide show is a presentation I have given to Yale librarians, students, and faculty on how to navigate the many online collections, search engines, and websites providing access to public domain images.

This presentation is meant to familiarize you with the concept of the public domain and how to conduct research and locate photographs in the public domain for scholarly research. Please note that this presentation focuses on photography only and not other works of visual art such as painting, sculpture, etc. There are two related sections of the presentation. First, I will give a brief introduction to the public domain and some key, related terminology. Second, I am going to cover a handful of online sources for public domain imagery and illustrate why a collection like the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs online catalog is far superior to other, more popular websites like Flickr, Google Image and Wikipedia. Although I am not here to simply bash Google, Flickr and Wiki. I think they are great sites when used properly and I will also demonstrate ways they can be used to your advantage. Please note that I am not a legal expert, so do not take any of this information as legal advice. Rather, think of it as a a set of guidelines for 1. locating PD imagery and 2. for navigating the wild world of copyright in the digital realm, which, you will quickly find, is like trying to push a rope up a hill. Free Culture! Public Domain photography on the Web. I’m also concentrating on a particularI’m stealing a page out of Lawrence Lessig’s book of the same title in that I hope to show you some great free resources on the web today. But also think of the title as a call to arms – free culture from online obscurity by using it. And public domain photos are begging to be used.
