2. What is an Introduction Paragraph?
 The first paragraph of your essay.
It introduces the main idea of your essay. A good opening
paragraph captures the interest of your reader and
tells why your topic is important.

Supporting sentence
Concluding sentence

4. What is a topic sentence?
 Expresses the main idea of a paragraph.
 Is usually the first sentence of a paragraph.
 Contains the central idea.
 Is also the most general sentence in a paragraph.

5. Example of a topic sentence
There are three reasons why Canada is
one of the best countries of the world.

6. What is supporting sentence?
The supporting sentence :
Develops, explains and supports the main idea
of the paragraph.
Contains fact, example and details.
Explains why the main idea it’s true.

7. Examples of supporting sentences
First, Canada has an excellent health
care system. Second, Canada has a
high standard of education. Finally,
Canada’s cities are clean and
efficiently managed.

8. What is a concluding sentence?
The Concluding Sentence :
 Is usually the last sentence of the paragraph.
 Restates the main idea.
 Is used to finish the paragraph or to prepare the reader
for the following paragraph.

9. Examples of concluding sentences
As a result, Canada is a desirable place to live.
For those reasons, Canada attracts a lot of
immigrants. Wouldn’t you like to live there?
Finally, Canada is a great model for other
countries to follow.

To check :
Content
Structure
Form

11. Content
 Develop only idea.
 Be coherent. This makes your paragraph easy to
understand.
 Focus on the main idea.
 Elaborate and develop your topic sentence. This
means that the topic should be explained in
detail.
 Add explanations, details and examples to the
supporting sentences.

12. Structure
Make sure your paragraph has :
One topic sentence.
As many supporting sentences as you need.
A concluding sentence.

13. Form
Make sure your paragraph :
 Has a five-space indention.
 There are no lines or blank spaces in between
sentences.
And that you :
 Write clear and complete
 Check your spelling and grammar.

There are many reasons why people move. Some move to
find better jobs or to advance their careers. Others are
attracted to places with better weather. Still others want to
move to a place with less crime. Finally, people often want
to move to a place with a lower cost of living. For these
reasons, every year millions of people pack up and move
to new place.

For thousands of years garlic has had many uses. The
Romans gave garlic to their slaves for strength and to their
soldiers for courage. During the middle Ages, some people
used garlic to keep witches away. In the eighteenth
century, garlic was used to cure diseases. Even today,
some people believe that eating garlic can prevent colds.
Garlic has a long history as a plant that can give health
and protection.
