3. GREETINGS FROM THE OKSF CHAIR
I am delighted and proud to present our first fundraising event, the
Judy Kang Violin Concert.
Our feature performer, Judy Kang, is a world-renowned Korean-
Canadian violinist and the recipient of a loaned Stradivarius violin
from the Arts Council of Canada. She will be accompanied on piano
by Mr. Jean Desmarais.
This event is intended to highlight Korean-Canadian talent and to
inspire further contribution between Koreans and Canadians through not only the arts but
also the wider community. Judy Kang is as an inspiration and mentor for many of our youths
today. Like Judy, the Foundation supports the many paths to artistic and academic success.
The OKSF began in September 2008, with 22 founding members, with the purpose of
awarding annual scholarships to post-secondary students from the Ottawa area for their
academic achievements and involvement in the Korean Community. Last year’s recipients
were two students – one from Carleton and another from McGill – who were privileged to
have been the first recipients of this scholarship.
Our foundation membership door is wide open and we count on the generous support of all
your contributions to support the younger generations. It is our wish that, through the
support of the OKSF, we can encourage all students to achieve the potential to become
leaders of Canada.
I would like to express my heart-felt thanks to our sponsors, the Embassy of the Republic of
Korea, the Canada Korea Society and the Korean-Canadian Association of Ottawa. My
thanks go out to our Board members and the Executive team who have dedicated their
valuable time and effort to make this concert possible.
Last, but not least, I thank you Judy Kang and Jean Desmarais for your performances this
evening.
Now let’s begin and enjoy this enchanting summer evening!
Thank you.
Chung Su Choi Broussard

4. GREETINGS FROM THE AMBASSADOR OF KOREA
Good evening OKSF Board Members, distinguished guests, ladies
and gentlemen.
I am honored to be here this evening as we join together to support the
Ottawa Korean Scholarship Foundation at this wonderful benefit
concert.
Since its inception on September 1st of 2008, the Ottawa Korean
Scholarship Foundation has garnered the support of the Korean-Canadian Association of
Ottawa, the Canada-Korea Society and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea.
The Ottawa Korean Scholarship Foundation provides an important incentive for post-
secondary students of Korean ancestry in and around the national capital region. Last year,
two deserving and outstanding students were the first recipients of this commendable
scholarship. Later this year, two more exceptional students will receive the scholarship.
It is of utmost importance that we, as Koreans, encourage our children to become the leaders
of tomorrow, whether in our native Korea or abroad. This scholarship is one vehicle by
which we can provide such motivation.
We are very fortunate to have Korean-Canadian violinist Judy Kang to entertain us this
evening. It is only fitting that this world-renowned and internationally-acclaimed Korean-
Canadian artist will be performing here tonight. In many ways, Ms. Kang exemplifies the
characteristics that are sought after among the applicants of this wonderful scholarship.
Thank you for being here this evening to support of the Ottawa Korean Scholarship
Foundation. It is my hope that this scholarship fund will be a tradition for many years to
come.
Thank you, and please enjoy the performance.
Sincerely,
Chan-ho Ha
Ambassador

5. ABOUT THE OTTAWA KOREAN
SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION (OKSF)
The Foundation was formed to not only encourage scholastic endeavors but to
promote community involvement to Koreans and Canadians living in Ottawa.
Children today have access to a global world as it has never been accessible
before. Channeling information and opportunity into action requires the will and
desire. More importantly, it requires parents and the community to not only
support Children’s aspirations, but to inspire them to lead the next generation
forward.
Through the generosity of our supporters, the OKSF provides financial support
in order to promote leadership, community, and multicultural values through
higher academic learning.
The aim is to foster a sense of community through collaboration and information
sharing between Korean and Canadian students, not only to strengthen the
Korean Community but also to support Korean-Canadian relationships as part of
Canada’s national multicultural identity.

7. The Violin Sonata No. 4 in A minor was composed in 1801. It was received
favourably among critics at the time. This work along with other Beethoven
compositions was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries and was means to be
published with Violin Sonata No. 5 (“Spring Sonata”). However it was published
on different sized paper, so the opus numbers had to be split.
In his Sonata for Violin and Piano, Ravel is said to have handled the violin and
piano relationship to “[emphasize] their irreconcilability through independence”.
Each movement highlights classical structure, bitonality, and countermotives,
ending with a riveting uninterrupted series of 16th notes, leaving the audience
enraptured to the last note.
In Ysaÿe’s Sonatas for Solo Violin, he used prominent characteristics of early
20th century music, such as whole tone scales, dissonances, and quarter tones.
Ysaÿe also employed virtuoso bow and left hand techniques throughout. Each
sonata was dedicated to one of Ysaÿe’s contemporary violinists: Joseph Szigeti
(No. 1), Jacques Thibaud (No. 2), George Enescu (No. 3), Fritz Kreisler (No. 4),
Mathieu Crickboom (No. 5), and Manuel Quiroga (No. 6).
Chopin’s Nocturne in C-sharp minor was composed in the year 1830 for solo
piano and dedicated to his older sister, Ludwika Chopin. Beginning with a
mellow introduction, the theme shifts to a dreamy pianissimo. It returns to the
original theme in C-sharp major. Piano-violin arrangements have been made and
often performed to evocate the original spirit of this composition.
The Carmen Fantasy, Op. 25, by Pablo de Sarasate, is a violin fantasy on
themes from the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet. The piece contains an
adaptation of the Aragonaise, Habanera, an interlude, Seguidilla, and the Gypsy
Dance.

and have received scholarships and awards including the eminent 2006 Galaxie
Rising Stars Award. They were featured in Chatelaine Magazine for Women as

Audiences (YA), the nation's largest nonprofit arts in education organization.

has performed on a 1747 "Palmason" Januarius Gagliano, generously awarded
