The document proposes using a subject hierarchy to support personalized web searches. It describes classifying web pages into topics in the hierarchy and mapping query terms to topics. This allows retrieving pages relevant to both the query terms and the user's interests as represented by topics in their search history. An evaluation with 17 users found the personalized results using this approach improved relevance compared to non-personalized searches. The richness of results depends on the depth of the hierarchy, and profiles can be automatically built and updated over time based on search history and topics.
