Selim’s main complaint against Ismail is the fact that he has turned away from Islamic

belief. Selim uses religion against Ismail by quoting the Quran. For example, Selim says this,

“He who sows discord can only reap evils and afflictions.” Selim also accuses Ismail of taking

territory from their states, being a tyrant, and allowing lawlessness.

Selim’s main complaint against Ismail is that he has turned away from the Islamic belief.

He calls Ismail a hypocrite, and says he has done and continues to do blasphemies. He is furious

that Ismail has destroyed the altars of the Lord, temples, pulpits, and that Ismail oppresses the

Muslims.

Selim uses religion against Ismail by saying, “the ulama and our doctors have

pronounced sentence of death against you, perjurer and blasphemer, and have imposed on every

Muslim the sacred obligation to arm in defense of religion and destroy heresy and impiety in your

person and that of all your partisans.” Selim also says that the Almighty has guided them into this

decision.

Selim also accuses Ismail of being a tyrant, and allowing lawlessness in his territory,

which he stole from Selim. He says that Ismail has allowed rape, lust, murder, and the ill-

treatment of the ulama. In the end of the letter, he commands Ismail to give back the territory that

he took under illegitimate pretense.

In this letter, Selim writes of his main complaint against Ismail, which is the fact he has

turned away from the Islamic belief. Through out this letter Selim quotes the Quran, and says

that the Lord has commanded this. He also accuses Ismail of being a tyrant and allowing

lawlessness, in the territory that he stole from their states.
