Snot a small thing.”
We can correlate the recent developments of the Indian
industrial sector. The growth of Micro Small and Medium
Enterprises (MSME) has been a remarkable phenomenon.
Industry experts were startled by the MSME rise exceeding
all the predictions, which was generally chosen in crediting
the key MNCs' performance to the industry's growth.
However, the recent COVID-19 pandemic that brought the
entire world to a standstill, revealed a different picture
altogether. The first to spring up with the boost of
indigenous innovation, and versatile flexibility were the
Micro Small and Medium Enterprises often referred as
MSMEs.

5. Great resilience and intensity for improvement propelled
the MSME surge with jaw-dropping statistics across the
industrial skyline of one of the fastest-growing economies
in the world. With around 36.1 million units throughout the
geographical expanse of the country, MSMEs contribute
approximately 6.11% of the manufacturing GDP and
24.63% of the GDP from service-based businesses.
The Indian MSME ministry projected a target to accelerate
the GDP contribution from the MSMEs to an impressive
50% by 2025 as India scales the new height of becoming a
$5 trillion economy. The MSMEs have contributed to
around 45% of the collective exports from India to various
locations across the globe.
With such interesting growth, modern MSMEs have
contributed remarkably through their unique yet humble
working methodologies. To understand them in greater

18. The Indian industrial sector has been on a steady rise
in the past few decades. Unlike the modern
countries that had sound engineering and technical
know-how, the Indian industries have grown steadily at an
awe-inspiring pace consistently across different verticals.
What could be the hidden secrets that led to the rise of the
Indian Industrial Sector?
According to the well-known proverb, ‘Necessity is the
mother of Invention’, the conditions were very tough and
challenging. Despite the odds, the Indian engineering
entrepreneurs stood up with stoic courage adopting the
principle of offering good quality logical, and feasible
solutions. The industries struggled with resources and
developed their own methodologies that changed the
scenario steadily.
Let us find out in detail the several influencing factors that
led to the rise of the modern MSME industry.
Digitalization
The MSME segment was one of the first industrial sectors
to adapt to modern technological developments. The
advancements in digital technology have changed the way
that contributed

business operations. Modern software for business
management, AutoCAD, Solidworks, etc is commonly used
in several engineering companies. As the digital trend was
introduced it became necessary for the MSMEs to mould
their working styles to flexible, efficient, and scalable
levels.
Digitalization further expanded their reach and connectivity
to different national as well as international destinations.
The virtual platform enabled them to offer their solutions to
a large number of customers and industries. According to a
recent study, the new digital technologies have reduced
operational expenditures to approximately 25-30% through
improved labor and capital utilization. The IT-driven smart
tools and techniques such as Information and
Communication Technology (ICT), Digital Integrated
Production Planning, Shop Floor Control, Supply Chain
Solutions, and Cloud-based ERP solutions have increased

20. the operational efficiency of SMEs in the current
environment. SMEs play a vital role in the operations and
profitability of E-Commerce platforms.
Business intelligence and data analytics have laid
opportunities for SMEs to make better decisions by
providing a deeper understanding of the customers. Using
customer intelligence and insights to analyse and predict
customer needs, designing new products that meet their
requirements and clever delivery of the right products at the
right time at a cost-effective price has revamped SMEs with
next-generation customer engagement capabilities.
The new CRM applications have enhanced communication,
synchronized the customer requirements to the
manufacturing schedules, and thereby bringing in better
professional control in improving the production processes
and adjusting the operations to the customer priorities. It
actually bridged the gap between sole manufacturing with
modern engineering excellence. The CRM also mitigated
the risks by aiding in the planning process that accelerated
the output volumes and enriched the quality standards too.
Government Initiatives
Various campaigns including Make in India, Digital India,
Skill India and Start-up India have provided the MSMEs a
vital boost in offering the right platform for showcasing
their innovative prowess on the nationwide level. The
government initiatives offered definitive support in boosting
their productivity.
Rise of Fin-tech
The new collaborative technological streams of fintech have
greatly supported the growth and development of MSMEs.
This eased the restructuring and enabled them in getting
financial aid, and technical assistance and move higher in
the bigger markets through the valuable nourishment from
the fintech applications. The tie-ups with the new-age non-
banking finance companies have allowed access to timely
finance to the MSMEs.
Changing Employment Structure
The employment sector grew largely with the focus of the
modern youth shifting from traditional agriculture to the
reliable and convenient industrial sector. People chose to
work in the industries on different levels and even set up
their small-scale units as they offered larger scope of
livelihood and better economic growth.
Rising Presence of Foreign Players
The foreign MNCs identified the growing potential of the
Indian market and made a bee-line in setting up of their
manufacturing plants across Indian geographies. The
multinational companies brought in an international culture
and working standard which influenced the MSME sector.
Taking a cue of the foreign giants, many small industrial
entrepreneurs made fundamental changes in their working
methodologies, adopted reputed quality standards, and
scaled up their operations to match the volumes and
international quality levels.
Interestingly, the MNCs too came forward for collaborating
with the MSMEs for getting the ‘inside strengths’ of the
Indian industries.
Stiff Competition
The entrepreneurs of small enterprises identified the
changing dynamics of the industrial sectors. The difficulty
in matching the market price led to their tie-ups with other
established organizations for a steady supply of customized
engineering goods. Likewise there were many such
companies eager to cater through their manufacturing
services. This steadily increased the competition and
pushed them for higher innovations, operational volumes,
and collaborations. The MSMEs rose steadily in the process
of improving the quality, enhancing the production
capacities, and innovating the offerings.

MSMEs
in Indian
Economic Horizon
25 | November, 2022 | www.insightssuccess.in
28. According to an industrial survey, the MSMEs in
the Indian economy have been important factors
of development in the growth of the market and
the region too. The MSMEs are primarily
engaged in manufacturing, processing,
production, and service of goods. The MSMEs
have been known to be important contributors to
approximately 50% of the Indian GDP, which has
resulted in several government initiatives in
encouraging their growth.
The MSMEs are considered as the backbone of
the Indian economy and are pivotal in driving
national growth through their multi-dimensional
contributions.
Need Creators
Every industrial enterprise in the MSME category
functions on a specific business model as part of
the manufacturing process. They comprise
Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM),
Special Job-work providers, special part makers,
differential service providers, trading and supply,
and more. They offer solutions through their work
and generate requirements for other providers
who support their business operations. This cyclic
structure of the MSMEs is a well-adapted and
powerful process in the industrial segments.
Diversify the industry-market
MSMEs for the core productive segments of the
industry which offer huge diversification and
collaborative growth. The versatility opens
numerous avenues of innovations, research and
development and widens the scope of the industry
itself. This helps in creating reliable resources
that work towards the fulfillment of the different
enterprises working at different levels of the
manufacturing chain.
Develop Opportunities
MSMEs work on specific to small volume
requirements that offer scope for industrial
investors to nurture their research and analysis
functions. Big industrial MNCs function on a
different scale so it becomes far more feasible and
possible for them to associate with the MSMEs to
develop their basic models and support their pilot
activities. Research and development are a big
industry that goes on through various
governments, semi-governments, and the
facilities of global MNCs. MSMEs form a ready
and productive resource that enables the big
conglomerates to carry out their research
activities on a controlled, niche and stringent
budget.
Generate local employment
The MSMEs form a huge industrial segment that
functions in industrial services and manufacturing
processes. Due to its far-reaching diverse
structure, there is always a need for both
experienced and fresh workforce to work at
several levels in production, quality control,
maintenance, sales and marketing, finance,
collaborating, etc. A recent study revealed that the
number of skilled and semi-skilled people
employed in the pre-pandemic period has doubled
in the post-pandemic period due to the COVID-
19 disruption. Unlike the other industries which
took several months to recoup from the situation,
the MSMEs were the first to quickly bounce back
to the industry requirements. The number of
people employed has grown up by an impressive
106 percent from 43,37,444 in FY 20 to
89,53,149 in FY21. It further rose by 4.9% to
93,94,957 in Fy22.
26 | November, 2022 | www.insightssuccess.in
29. Contribute to Industrial Stabilization
The MSMEs form the basic and fundamental base
of the industrial sector that functions on limited
basic resources and small to medium volumes of
manpower. These, directly and indirectly, form a
cohesive structure that offers a valuable cushion
of stability and nourishment of resources that lead
the industrial resilience and sustainability. This is
one of the prominent aspects of the industrial
structure in modern and developing economies.
Flexibility and Adaptability
The basic business model, structure, and nature of
the enterprises are designed on simple and
flexible patterns. These offer scalable and easily
modifiable working processes that accommodate
all sorts of requirements. This offers them a
decent scope of growth with effective control
over the material planning and production line-
ups. MSMEs offer economical and feasible
product solutions that enrich the small set of
requirements arising from time to time.
Boost Indigenous prowess
Working on local potential involving the very
own indigenous technologies has supported the
empowerment of the national economy. The
ample scope that it offers has paved the way for
numerous industrial innovations and the rise of
collaborations in diverse industrial segments.
Many organizations have excelled to the extent of
expanding their own production area of
operations by building solutions in forwarding
integrations in the production processes.
Identifying and understanding the potential of the
client industry motivates them in building their
own capacities to consume their own finished
products.
Similarly, the changing market dynamics have
propelled the MSME entrepreneurs to innovate
their production units to develop the
manufacturing of the raw material of their process
to reduce the input costs and enhance the
production capacity of the enterprise. This
backward integration is commonly observed in
the Indian industrial sector in the past decade.

Telematics devices while being very cost-effective, ensuring
Data Security, and enabling the development of custom
solutions as per varied business use cases.
Sharing its USPs, Sudeep says that they include
Ÿ Zeliot is offering Managed applications from the cloud
marketplace, very few companies in the world do this
for telematics.
Ÿ Zeliot’s focus is on building modules for raw data
analysis as compared to a readymade solution
Ÿ Data security is given utmost priority, the modules built
by Zeliot are all deployable on the customer’s subscrip-
tion hence the data directly lands on the customers’
cloud server rather than moving through Zeliot’s cloud
server, even with all of this Zeliot ensures the same level
of support for the products.
“Automotive OEMs are our target customers. Along with
OEMs we also sell to enterprises who want to adapt real-
time asset visibility into their business. Royal Enfield,
Log9, TVS Motors, Tata Communications, IOCL, Ashok
Leyland, Volvo Eicher, Bosch, myTVS, and many others
are our marquee customers,” he adds.
Build Your Enterprise Mobility Solutions
Zeliot offering products through cloud marketplaces (Azure
Marketplace, AWS Marketplace) is adding a different
dimension to the business as this GTM is particularly
special for the mobility sector due to its many benefits in
terms of data security, customizability, and cost.
The offerings from Zeliot are divided into three major BUs.
SaaS (Software as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service),
and LaaS (License as a Service). There are independent
teams that work on scaling the connected mobility platform
through these three BUs. For Zeliot technology plays a vital
role, “We call ourselves a deep tech company. What that
means essentially is we don’t build solutions per industry
but instead focus on building technological modules which
solve problems on a fundamental data level and allow our
partners or customers to build solutions of their liking,”
shares Sudeep.
Most of Zeliot’s sales happen through Technology partners
whom Sudeep and the team Zeliot calls TSP (Technology
Service Providers). Now as they have started working with
OEMs direct customer sales have started to pick up.

32. Highly Customizable Platform
Sharing Zeliot’s saga of inception and its extraordinary
journey thereafter, Sudeep says it’s quite an interesting
story on how Zeliot came into existence. They (Zeliot Co-
founders) had approached iTriangle for strategic sales for a
previous company they were working for. Somehow during
the conversation, the idea of starting a new company was
floated and Zeliot came into existence.
Initially, Zeliot started offering Fleet Management Solutions
(FMS) to customers as a SaaS offering. FMS allows fleet
owners/managers to get real-time visibility into the assets
on the field. However, at the time, the automobile
manufacturers in India were looking to integrate Telematics
into the vehicle by default. This made the team realize there
is a big potential for a platform dedicated to connected
mobility on which custom industry-specific solutions can be
developed. “This change in thought process has helped us
to attract interest from major OEMs as well as large
enterprises, who are looking to develop specific niche
solutions,” informs Sudeep.
Highly Secure Environment
Being an experienced leader, Sudeep shares his opinion on
how adopting modern technologies like AI and ML is
impacting the automotive telematics space and how Zeliot
is adapting to the change. “The business we are in today
falls under the umbrella of IoT, and the appropriate
keyword is Telematics,” he states. Telematics is contributing
to more than ~60% of IoT business. With the advent of
connected vehicles/connected machines, the industry is
expanding very rapidly. The potential can be traced to the
2010s mobile phone market.
This decade will belong to mobility as a whole and IoT
plays a very vital role in achieving mobility use cases. “The
industry will be growing at more than 25% CAGR and as
we speak daily there are many new use cases emerging,
Usage Based Insurance being the most recent one when it
comes to the Indian market. The adoption of connected
vehicle technology by enterprises is one of the most
significant trends we have seen; this will pave the way for
mainstream adoption,” mentions Sudeep.
A 99.99% Guaranteed Up-Time
On considering the current industry scenario, according to
Sudeep, one of the biggest challenges is for OEMs to
integrate connected technology while managing additional
expenses. Data security is also a major concern because
unauthorized access to it could have adverse effects on the
road.
He reveals, “Zeliot is offering Platform based approach
through cloud marketplace for connected vehicle technolo-
gies, we can say it will be a game changer as it solves one
of the biggest concerns of IoT today which is DATA
privacy.”
Connected Vehicle - Industry Problems
Ÿ Connected vehicles generate vast amounts of data.
OEMs/Enterprises currently lack tools to facilitate the
transfer and storage of data securely on the cloud. Also,
comprehensive consent management tools to capture
end customer consent are missing.
Ÿ With increasing complexity in vehicle architectures,
there are limited options for OEMs/Enterprises to adopt
connected vehicle technology comprehensively. Off-the-
shelf solutions will not be suitable as the requirements
may vary across OEMs/Enterprises.
Ÿ Tangible Return-On-Investment for the Automotive
OEMs/Enterprises on the investment of connected
technology is limited.
Partnering with Zeliot helps enterprises or OEMs to achieve
Data Privacy and Security
Ÿ Meets rigorous automotive safety, cybersecurity, and
data privacy standards.
Ÿ Data encryption algorithms and certificate-based
authentication prevent man-in-the-middle attacks.
Enhanced Cx Ownership Experience
Ÿ Enable custom-branded end-customer applications.
Ÿ Upsell relevant services to end customers.
Ÿ Incentivize end customers for safe driving.
Ÿ Roll out exciting customer-centric features to vehicles
on the field.
Cost
Ÿ With one platform for updates, logging, commands, and
diagnostics, enterprises and OEMs can reduce multi-
vendor integration reliance and complexity.
Ÿ Industry best pricing for managing data handling and
storage, optimized for connected vehicle data.

33. Custom Business Models
In his advice to budding entrepreneurs aspiring to venture
into the automotive telematics industry, Sudeep says that
‘Telematics’ is a sun-rise industry and has a huge growth
potential in this decade. The key is to be agile and identify
the right market fit for the product early on – this is
certainly a challenge as the use cases and industries that
telematics can cater to are immense.
Strong Partnerships: Telematics is an ecosystem play – it
encompasses hardware manufacturers, network providers,
cloud providers, solution developers, and businesses/end
customers. One needs to have strong partnerships across
these various ecosystem players to be able to come up with
products/solutions that add strong value to the customer.
Zeliot’s early partnership with iTriangle (India’s leading
manufacturer) and Bosch has helped Zeliot gain major
traction in the market and enabled a strong GTM strategy.
Constantly Upgrading Your Future Mobility
On envisioning scaling Zeliot CMP’s operations and
offerings in the future, Sudeep shares that positioning Zeliot
as a Platform provider and GTM being the cloud market-
place enables Zeliot to go global quickly and enables OEMs
and Technology Solution Providers across the globe to
adopt Zeliot’s technology to fuel their connected mobility
vision.
“The advent of EVs in this decade also helps as all new-age
EV companies are coming up with connected vehicles.
Zeliot’s platform is rightly positioned to facilitate this trend
and enable new-age EV startups to realize their connected
mobility vision. Exciting times ahead!” concludes Sudeep.
