Essential questions provide a rich, meaningful way to frame global learning experiences for students. They open doors to inquiry and invite students to truly grapple with the complex issues of the global curriculum. In this session, we will explore what makes a question essential and how to transform a good essential question into a great one. We will closely examine the ISSN Essential Question Matrix – a menu of high quality essential questions addressing 15 globally significant issues across all grade levels and content areas – and explore a variety of specific ways to use them to enhance global learning in our classrooms and schools.

Want to learn more about incorporating SAGE in an ELA classroom? In this session participants will learn how to use two powerful tools, National Novel Writing Month and a school-based Literary Journal, to add SAGE to your ELA department. During this session, participants will: 1. Access all resources for National Novel Writing Month, with an emphasis on Student Choice and creating Authentic Work 2. Analyze the HAIS National Novel Writing Month plan and student work samples. 3. Receive a step-by-step guide to creating a campus literary journal with an emphasis on Global Significance, Cross-Disciplinary Learning, and Exhibition 4. View the HAIS Literary Journal and create a plan for implementing a journal on your campus This session is open to K-12 teachers, and all resources are free! Please bring a laptop, tablet, or mobile device.

SAGE in the ELA classroom

Are you new to the International Studies Schools Network (ISSN)? If so, this three-part workshop is for you! Participants will learn about the history and driving principles of the ISSN. After reviewing the ISSN Global School Design Model participants will learn the ISSN approach to curriculum, instruction, and assessment: the Graduate Performance System (GPS). Importantly, participants will be introduced to valuable resources designed to help transform teaching and learning while preparing students for college, career, and global citizenship.

How do teachers implementing the ISSN framework put Action into the component, "Taking Action” without the project consuming the learning? The ISSN Performance Assessment Shells and SAGE are tools teachers can use to incorporate project-based learning activities into their curriculum that are specifically designed to address the four domains of global competence. This session will provide an overview of specific project-based learning components in conjunction with ISSN resources. Explore the use of SAGE and the Performance Assessment Design Shells as elements necessary to support students in Taking Action. Participants will interact with each other to discuss challenges and successes of project implementation. Participants will leave with exposure to a number of ISSN resources and an understanding of the essential project-based learning components necessary to empower students to Take Action on Global issues.
