Both research and writing skills are essential for success in college and beyond, but first-semester freshmen do not always recognize the importance of these skills. By integrating a research skills course and a writing course within a learning community, students were able to apply these skills in their projects that integrated the learning community themes. The instructors worked together to scaffold assignments and assess similar learning outcomes. Ultimately, students in the learning community were more engaged in the process of research and had greater capacity to research for their writing assignments than if the two courses were separated. This presentation will share strategies and ideas for pairing information literacy and composition within a learning community.

El presente reporte pretende comunicar el proceso y los resultados de investigación llevados a cabo en instancias de elaboración de tesis, correspondiente a la Maestría en Psicología del Aprendizaje F.C.E Universidad Nacional del Comahue. La temática se centra en la formación de los maestros en ejercicio en el período de iniciación a la docencia. Sus objetivos se definen en torno a la identificación, descripción e interpretación de las necesidades formativas sentidas y las oportunidades formativas ponderadas por los maestros principiantes en el período que transitan. O presente estudo relata a experiência de participação como ouvinte em reuniões organizadas para a conquista e implementação da Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul (UFFS), na cidade de Erechim, Rio Grande do Sul. O texto pretende discutir os impactos que uma formação profissional docente, interligada às demandas de uma região específica e a grupos da sociedade frequentemente marginalizados, pode vir a promover na constituição do professor e nas comunidades envolvidas. A UFFS pretende democratizar o acesso à formação de professores e a outras áreas, através de seu caráter público e popular, com vistas à diversidade cultural e a identidade local, no caso, uma região afastada da capital, no interior, com grande extensão de áreas rurais. Assim, os referidos encontros eram realizados com pesquisadores, autoridades de educação e da estrutura política do município, sendo destacada a participação de movimentos sociais e de sindicatos de professores que, através de seus relatos, apontam um perfil específico de formação educacional, especialmente, a de educadores, frente às dificuldades e necessidades regionais. Consideram-se, na análise, esses discursos e a intenção da instituição, segundo seu Projeto Político Pedagógico Institucional, de favorecer uma formação crítica, cidadã e interdisciplinar, além de promover o encontro com a comunidade. Apresenta-se, assim, uma discussão acerca das possibilidades de inserção destes professores iniciantes num contexto que lhes é familiar, por meio de uma formação que os aproxime das demandas sociais de sua localidade. Autores como Marcondes (2008), Cunha (2006), Santos (2005) e relatórios da UFFS dialogam com as ponderações realizadas.

Presentation given at OCWC/Connexions conference at Rice University, February 2009. Abstract: Since the MIT OCW program was started in 2002, the OCW movement and idea have spread to many different countries and linguistic contexts. Wonderful innovation, production and research is happening in different countries, and often published in different languages. For the OCW and OER movements to progress, it is imperative that we be able to learn from each other, and bridge these linguistic barriers. China has been one of the most aggressive adopters of the OCW idea. Not only is China Open Resources for Education (CORE) coordinating efforts to translate MIT OCW into Chinese, but the Chinese Ministry of Education has since 2003 been operating a national OCW program called China Quality OpenCourseWare (精品课程). Chinese universities submit proposals, and can receive between $7,300 and $14,600 per course that is made freely available online. By 2007, there were already over 1,100 courses available online, many of these with extensive resources, and video recordings. In addition to this large-scale production OCW, the Chinese scholarly community has also been prolific in researching and publishing about the program. The China Academic Journals database, which provides the full text of over 7,000 Chinese scholarly articles, lists 2,137 articles with the term 精品课程 (China Quality OCW), of which 421 were published in 2008. In numbers, this is roughly equivalent to all the scholarly publication that mention OCW in English and other Latin languages in total - however, the story becomes even more impressive when initial sampling shows that most of the Chinese articles listed mention OCW in their title, and have OCW as their main topic, whereas many of the English language publications are writing about broader issues, and only refer to OCW in passing. I am currently conducting a research project on this wealth of literature. Initially I will try to provide a broad grouping of the Chinese articles on OCW, provide statistics on number of articles in each group (for example: articles that describe the process of producing individual OCW courses, articles that present surveys on student usage, etc), and in what kind of journals these articles appear. My ultimate objective is not only to gain a good understanding of the state of research around the Chinese Quality OCW program, but also identify specific journal articles that provide theoretical models, methodological approaches or accounts of experiences that are very relevant and useful to the North-American research on OER and OCW. In my presentation, I will give a brief overview of the history and current state of China Quality OpenCourseWare, how it is funded, produced, and used, and also how it interacts with the Chinese translations of for example MIT OCW. I will give an overview over the “state of research”, both in terms of poignant research questions, methodologies and also relevant findings, from the Chinese context. I will also argue for a more integrated research roadmap for OCWs in North America, that actively engages with researchers and the literature from around the world.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
