Romulus and Remus were twin brothers whose mother was a Vestal Virgin and father was the god Mars. They were abandoned as infants but survived being found by a she-wolf. As adults, they wanted to establish their right to rule and founded a new city. However, a dispute arose over who would be king when Remus jumped across the boundary Romulus had dug, and in defense of his claim Romulus killed his brother, establishing himself as the sole ruler and founding the city of Rome.
