The role of The Mobile Collective, in the EU FP7 Citizen Cyberlab project
The Citizen Cyberlab was a 3 year long EU FP7 grant-funded project to research and evaluate on-line collaborative environments and software tools that stimulate creative learning in the context of Citizen Science. As Director of The Mobile Collective, Margaret was in charge of Community Outreach & Engagement, Events, and Community Building across the whole project.
Our goal has been to pioneer a range of open source platforms and tools that enable and enhance learning and creativity in Citizen Cyberscience, using four pilot projects as testbeds. These pilots, platforms and tools have been evaluated by experts in educational technology and human-computer interaction at University of Geneva and UCL. This research has produced new understanding of creative learning behaviours, anchored in real-world examples of Citizen Cyberscience.
The Citizen Cyberlab Consortium consisted of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR/UNOSAT), together with Imperial College (ICSTM), University College London (UCL), Université de Genève (UNIGE) and Université Paris Descartes (UPD), as well as the UK-based innovation consultancy, Gold Mobile Innovation, with a track-record of running inspiring events for software developers, scientists and educators, under the banner of The Mobile Collective (TMC).
Report on Mekong ICT Camp Chiang Mai 2010

On average, users viewed three to four other contributions before making their own. While a participatory subculture formed, it was relatively small. The findings suggest Web 2.0 can promote participation by connecting people and allowing informal knowledge sharing and learning from others.

This is presentation for the paper "Open data hackathon as a tool for increased engagement of Generation Z: to hack or not to hack?" presented at EGETC2022.
A hackathon is known as a form of civic innovation in which participants representing citizens can point out existing problems or social needs and propose a solution. Given the high social, technical, and economic potential of open government data (OGD), the concept of open data hackathons is becoming popular around the world. This concept has become popular in Latvia with the annual hackathons organised for a specific cluster of citizens – Generation Z. This study presents the latest findings on the role of open data hackathons and the benefits that they can bring to both the society, participants, and government. First, a systematic literature review is carried out to establish a knowledge base. Then, empirical research of 4 case studies of open data hackathons for Generation Z participants held between 2018 and 2021 in Latvia is conducted to understand which ideas dominated and what were the main results of these events for the OGD initiative. It demonstrates that, despite the widespread belief that young people are indifferent to current
societal and natural problems, the ideas developed correspond to current situation and are aimed at solving them, revealing aspects for improvement in both the
provision of data, infrastructure, culture, and government- related areas.Openworld Game

Take back the web - Cheng Kung University team review
Mozilla Campus Campaign 2016 was a non-localized campaign that surprisingly had one team from Cheng-Kung University in Taiwan. The Taiwanese team learned about protecting online privacy and improving their workshop skills. They created detailed workshop plans and scripts to teach their friends about technology issues. The coaches provided weekly mentoring, helping the team think deeply about promoting security and why education on these topics is important. Lessons included considering different strategies for different countries and having a "next step" prepared from the beginning.

A Guide to AI for Smarter Nonprofits - Dr. Cori Faklaris, UNC Charlotte
Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.
