  1. 1. STORM THORGERSON DIGIPAK RESEARCH
  2. 2. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Storm Elvin Thorgerson (28 February 1944 – 18 April 2013) was an English graphic designer, best known for his work for rock artists such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. He is one of the most influential designers of our time. He created a 6 stage approach to the way in which he created and designs album covers which will be beneficial for this stage in my project. He sadly passed away on 18 April 2013, at the age of 69 where he earlier had a stroke but died due to cancer. "a constant force in my life, both at work and in private, a shoulder to cry on, and a great friend".
  3. 3. THE 6 STAGE PROCESS
  4. 4. THE BRIEF The designer meets with the artist or band to discuss the genre of the music. They will go through song titles and lyrics to help aid the designs. The designer will then come up with shapes and colour schemes relevant top the overall feel and style of the artists work.
  5. 5. ROUGHS The band and the designer meet again to try and funnel down the ideas and come to an agreement on specifics. Here word play is used along with scribbling's to help come up with the big idea.
  6. 6. TESTS Here the designer will haver drawn up some different ideas based on the information given by the band. The prototypes generated will be able to have feedback given and the designs adapted or tweaked to suit the band completely if necessary.
  7. 7. THE SHOOT Here a photo-shoot is done using models and other props if needed to create the Digi pack cover. A location is chosen and the shot takes place there for long periods of time. Many pictures are taken using different angles, shots and lenses etc. to create a different look. The lighting is also experimented with at this stage of the process, this will make the editing section easier.
  8. 8. THE EDITING Here once the photo-shoot is done, the designer then uses post production effects on the best shots taken. Here different filters and effects are placed on the images to give them a new feel.
  9. 9. THE ARTWORK Now a final image is selected and the editing has been completed on it. The artwork is looked at by the band and it should with all the research fit with the song(s). The artwork is then handed to the band to use as their cover.
