EDUCATION & SOCIETY
Foundation of Education
ACTIVITY: pass the curse
SOCIETY
SOCIETY
 Denotes the totality of social organization
and its complex network of social
relationships or social interaction.
 The term "society" came from the Latin
word societas, which in turn was derived
from the noun socius ("comrade, friend,
ally"; adjectival form socialis) used to
describe a bond or interaction between
parties that are friendly, or at least civil.
EDUCATION
 is seen as a means of
cultural transmission from
one generation to another
in any given society.
Conflict/Functionalist Theories
KARL MARX EMILE DURKHEIM
Functionalists
 Assume that consensus is the normal
state in society and conflict represents
a breakdown of shared values
 Educational reform is to create
structures, programs and curricula that
are technically advanced, rational, and
encourage social unity
Theoretical Perspectives
 Functional Theories…stresses the
interdependence of the social system,
how well the parts are integrated with
each other
 Emile Durkheim…education in all
societies of critical importance in
creating moral unity, social cohesion,
and harmony…moral values are the
foundation of society
Conflict Theories
 Whereas functionalists
emphasize cohesion, conflict
theorists emphasize struggle in
explaining social order
 Karl Marx the intellectual founder
of conflict theories
Conflict Theories
 Social order is based on the ability of
dominant groups imposing their will on
subordinate groups through force,
cooptation, and manipulation
 The glue of society is economic,
political, cultural, and military power
 societies try to evolve education
systems and policies that would
meet the needs, beliefs, attitudes
and the aspirations of their people

  1. So yung ginawa nating activity ay may konkesiyon may specific role or function, na kailangan ma meet ng isat – isa One of the basic blocks used by sociologists to be able to understand the world we live in…
  2. It symbolizes that group within which human beings can live a total common life. Society is defined as the whole range of social relationships of people living in a certain nd having a sense of belonging to the same group. Some sociologist opine that with modern technological communication, one may have aa society of people who share a common culture without sharing a common habitat or geopgraphical territory. These ay be professional organizations like international org of doctors, brotherhood, trade organizations or labor unions.
  3. Community Society Population is one of the most essential characteristicsof a community irrespective of the consideration whether people have or do not have conscious relations. Population is important but here the population is conditioned by a feeling of oneness. Thus conscious relations are more important than the mere population for a society. A community by nature is discrete as compared with society. By nature and character society is abstract. For community area or locality is very essential and that perhaps is the reason that the community had a definite shape. Society is area less and shapeless and for a society area is no consideration. A community has comparatively narrow scope of community sentiments and as such it cannot have wide heterogeneity. A society has heterogeneity and because of its wide scope and field can embrace people having different conflicts. The scope of community is narrow than that of society because community came much later than the society. Though the primitive people might not have understood the importance of community but they realized that of the society and lived in it. The society has much wider scope as compared with the community. In a community every effort is made to avoid differences or conflicts and to bring likeness as nearly as possible because cooperation and conflicts cannot exist in a community. In a society likeness and conflict can exist side by side andin fact the scope of society is so vast that there is every possibility of adjustment.
  4. Lets see diff educational contextual views Educational institutions are micro-societies, which reflect the entire society Education systems are not the same, as no two societies are identical. Therefore, education systems differ from society to society and their aims, contents and techniques also differ from one society to another.
  5. Education as a social phenomenon does not take place in a vacuum or isolation; it takes place in the society and this normally begins from the family, which is one of the social institutions responsible for the education of the child. The relationships between the two concepts are so strong that it is not possible to separate them because what happens to one affects the other. Since education is an institution as well
  6. Israel is a complex society with tensions between state and religion, and the cultural rights of jews and arabs. Notwithstanding this, the state curriculum is standardized by the ministry of education and culture who allow few exceptions. The academic year runs from september through to july 6 days a week, and the teaching medium is either Arabic or Hebrew. Education is compulsory and free (although some materials must be bought).
  7. This is one of the reasons why societies try to evolve education systems and policies that would meet the needs, beliefs, attitudes and the aspirations of their people
  8. Within the society there exist organized systems of social norms (everyday common activities) So they have stable rules that govern their activities in a social institutions So yung institution such as family, economy religion , govt and education meet certain social needs. There a re major theoretical perspectives explaining the nature of society
  9. Functionalists stress that there is equilibrium or balance among its parts and among the forces operating on it. FUNCTION series of of service activities carried on Society is a social syst Example yung family may function o nagmmanifest sa kaniya yung procreation and educationaem which is made up of set of elements or components na interralated in a more or less stable way
  10. Though claim din nila na not all functions of a social system ensure the equilib So may imbalance or dysfunctions\since hindi it DOES NOT GIVE A CLEAR PICTURE OF SOCIAL LIFE
  11. Lage parein po taung may struggle he materialist  view of history = the most important determinant of social life is the work people are doing, especially work that results in provision of the basic necessities of life, food, clothing and shelter.  Marx thought that the way the work is socially organized and the technology used in production will have a strong impact on every other aspect of society.
  12. hierarchical order that is, through the social structure in which education plays a prominent and significant role in fixing educated individuals into social classes.
  13. Begins with Marx and his analysis of history Thesis/antithesis = struggle (conflict) Synthesis = a new order is produced because of the struggle between the classes
  14. education has to fulfill both the individual's needs and those of the society and must keep pace with other sub-systems in the society, as both variables are inter-related. This is because of the fact that what happens to the educational system undoubtedly affects the society, and whatever occurs in the society influences or shapes the educational system in all its ramifications.
  15. It is not important for you to be educated for your own personal sake, but for the sake of those who come after you. Our collective knowledge has been built up for hundreds of years because those who are educated pass along their knowledge. This will serve as an inspiration to you and share it with your children to inspire them to become educated.
