THE KALEIDOSCOPE END
OF YEAR SHOW FOR 2018
Welcome address by Head of School:
Dr Anthony J. Keane
As the opening address in this
booklet, it is my great pleasure
to welcome you to the 2018
Kaleidoscope exhibition of final
year student projects from the
Creative Digital Media programme
at the Institute of Technology
Blanchardstown (ITB). It is now 19
years since ITB had its first intake of
students and life today bears little
comparison to back then, due mainly
to the amount of digital technology
integration in our daily lives. In 1999,
you could live without the Internet
and a phone was just a phone. No
iPhones existed or smart technology
of any kind. How did we survive? The
big debate among photographers
then was whether digital pictures
could be as good as traditional film
exposures. We lived in an analogue
world and Google was just a startup.
We have come a long way since then
and the Kaleidoscope exhibition
shows us just how far. This is an
annual event that just gets better
from year to year. Students are
experts at exploiting the technology
around them and when combined
with their creative abilities, the
results can be amazing. All the human
senses are game for challenge and
stimulation from film, sound, colours,
lighting, storytelling and pictures. The
ITB students do not disappoint. I can
promise that you will come away with
the most positive feelings of wonder
and admiration for them and also for
the College staff who have to take
some of the credit, but nevertheless
most of the credit belongs to the
students. It is their hard work and
perseverance that has got them
through their course and made them
ready to begin their careers.
Well done everyone and enjoy.
You deserve it.

Pablo Picasso once said “Every child is an artist,
the problem is staying an artist when you grow
up”. Never has this been truer than it is today.
Emerging from the depths of recession, modern
Ireland has placed an emphasis on the economic
needs of the country, orientating our education
systems towards science and technology. As a
consequence of this, STEM subjects and related
ways of knowing are often promoted at the
expense of the arts and humanities. In 2008, a
group of academics here at ITB challenged that
view and hatched a vision for a programme
that combined the best elements of science,
technology, creativity and art, with the intention
of producing graduates that could contribute to
Ireland’s creative industries and cultural land-
scape. Our first level 8 graduates left our campus
in 2012 and have gone on to become designers,
coders, film makers, artists, animators, game
designers and illustrators to list but a few.
For many students, the college experience
ends with a final examination and a solitary
walk out of an examination hall. In Creative
Digital Media, we insist that they leave here
with a swagger and pomp. Each year, this
show provides our graduates with a public
platform to show off their passions and
skills. Hundreds of lecture sessions and
thousands of hours of work and study
culminate in this piece of public display.
Both the students and staff have
worked incredibly hard to create
the exhibition and we do hope
that you enjoy it. Please join me
in congratulating them on their
achievements.
Enjoy the show!

Up In The Air is a portrayal of the mindset and behaviours of a teenage girl, Tara as she
contemplates taking her own life, but at the same time highlighting how important she
is to her parents and also how much she means to her friends, while on the other hand
her mind is full of negativity and she sees no reason to continue on.
The aim is to address the importance of thinking twice and to make one think of
those around them that will be grieving for a long time thinking about what they
did wrong or how they could have prevented this from happening.
In doing this I hope to help girls who may be going through similar situations
understand that there are other solutions and to make them think twice, also
to make parents aware that they should identify these behaviours in order
to be able to help them.

unique way of using the same pieces of technology. The documentary is made to
make people think about the technology all around us and how we and others
use it.

CORE is an abstract 3D animated short film, created with Blender, which uses
colour, texture, shape, form and setting to illustrate the experience of depression
via the turbulent journey of the protagonist, a strange alien like bot. After reboot-
ing on a seemingly lifeless and barren foreign planet, the bot must explore the
environment as it is beckoned to a mysterious pulsating light atop a mountain
in the distance while a violent storm rages. A variety of bizarre creatures are
encountered along the way, each seeming to allude to something deeper.

Resonate is an experimental documentary exploring emotional influences and connections
to Electronic music from the perspective of a group of highly passionate and talented
Irish DJ’s and Music Producers. Electronic music is more commonly associated with
technology and often not as much with emotion. What this documentary illustrates is
the raw emotion it has the power to induce from both the perspective of the listener
and the creator. The solid and blatantly honest interviews paired with abstract
visuals created in After Effects take this documentary away from a more traditional
style, hopefully as eccentric and immersive as Electronic music itself is.

Pillars of Creation takes us on a journey across the stars within and beyond our
limitations. It delves into that which science has uncovered and what still remains a
mystery to us. The animation explores visually the destructive nature of space such
as the black hole and celebrates nebulae which cook the elements of life itself.
The project, created with Blender and After Effects, is designed to intrigue and
inspire viewers through an immersive experience both visually and aurally.

Danny and Villy is a game that aims to open up Dante’s 14th century, iconic, epic poem to a
younger audience, through the modern technology of interactive video games. The game
involves the player playing as the main protagonist Danny, who explores and travels
through the different layers of Inferno with the goal of
reaching Paradise. The levels are designed in an otherworldly, abstract way, so as to
stay true to the vivid and in-depth universe of that was described
within The Divine Comedy.
The creation of the game during development, and being able to adapt the poem
through an interactive medium, was made possible by using many different
software programs such as; Photoshop which helped me to create textures and
visual 2D designs, Blender for making 3D models and Unity, which helped in
aiding the creation of the world that the player will engage in during game play.
