What is intrauterine insemination (iui) and how does it work priory clinic
1.
2. About Intra-Uterine Insemination(IUI)
Intrauterine Insemination is an assisted
reproductive technology. This is a procedure
where the eggs of the lady are not
manipulated to increase the chances of
conceiving. In this procedure a catheter is
used to place a defined number of washed
sperms into the uterus directly. In this
procedure, the primary aim is to increase the
number of sperms that make their way into
the fallopian tubes. As a result, the process of
IUI is an effective way to increase the chances
of pregnancy.
3. When is intrauterine insemination
used?
Intrauterine Insemination is a process used in specific
conditions to increase the chances of pregnancy. Usually,
when a couple is unable to conceive even after one year,
this process is suggested if the following conditions are
observed:
The reason of infertility is unexplained and not defined.
The sperm count is lower than normal
The sperms display low mobility
The cervix presents unfavorable conditions like excessive
thickness
The couple requires a sperm donor in order to conceive
The man suffers from ED
The cervix has developed scar tissues due to some surgical
procedure or endometriosis.
4. The actual procedure
The procedure is very simple as it does not require any
manipulation of the egg. As a result, even when a
woman is not receiving any medication for better egg
production, the procedure can be conducted.
The first step is the ultrasound that is conducted to
determine the size of the follicles. In order to
stimulate the release of eggs, hCG or the Human
Chronic Gonadotropin hormone. Following that a
semen sample is washed to separate the sperms from
the seminal fluid. These washed sperms are injected
directly into the uterus using a catheter. That way, the
number of sperms placed directed towards the
fallopian tube can be controlled to increase the
chances of conception.
5. The actual procedure
The entire process causes very little discomfort. It is
quite time consuming, however. After this process, it
is important to watch for the signs of pregnancy to
administer any further procedure or medication. Most
doctors advice women to take ovary stimulating
medication to improve egg production.
Is IUI successful?
The success rate of IUI is determined by the age of the
women undergoing the process. If the woman is aged
35 years or younger, the success rate of IUI is between
10-20% per cycle. The other factors that determine
the success rate of the procedure are the health of
the sperms used and the health of the lady
undergoing the procedure.
6. Risks involved in IUI
Like most fertility procedures, IUI is also prone to
certain risks. The primary risks involve reactions to the
prescribed drugs. In case of multiple births as a result
of artificial procedures, there may be health risks to
the child and the mother. Multiple births itself is one
risk involved with artificial processes and people have
greater chances of having twins or triplets. The health
of the child conceived artificially needs to be
monitored carefully to reduce chances of any risk.
