How to be a School Nurse
School nursing is another area of specialization that deals with the health and welfare of students in the
school, as well as of the employees. Each school from elementary, high school to college has its own
nurse that oversees the health of all the students. It is the responsibility of the school nurse to facilitate
annual physical check-up of the students and employees that include physical assessment made by the
physician, dental check-up and the adherence to having the necessary diagnostic examinations and
vaccines for over-all health and wellness.
If you have been working in the hospital for a year or so, and you seem to be uncomfortable anymore in
the clinical setting, then you might as well consider being a school nurse. If you love to do more of clinic
works, giving of health teachings and looking over the health of the students; plus you also love the
ambiance of school, then without a doubt you are called to be a school nurse. If you want to tread this
career path, then here are the steps on how you can get there:
1.) The very start of your journey is the successful completion of your degree in nursing. Once you
graduated college from an accredited school, you can already prepare for your licensure exam. You need
to ask the board of nursing near you with regards to the requirement in taking NCLEX and you should
process it as soon as possible.
2.) Once you are done with NCLEX and you already have you nursing license, you can then, move one
step further by applying as a community health nurse. However, you can also apply as a staff nurse at a
hospital so that you can gain substantial work experience that will surely help you towards your
transition as a school nurse later. For sure, if you have much work experience, your chance of being
hired instantly as a staff nurse once you apply for the said position will be much higher compared to
applying directly for the said position after you earned your license. But, of course there is an exception
because at times there will be urgent hiring of schools for school nurses.
3.) If you choose to directly apply as a school nurse, you can look for vacancies for such position in the
internet and you can pass your application there. Of course, it will also help if you can personally submit
your application in the school. Chances are if there is an urgent hiring and you are prepared enough to
answer the questions during the exam and interview, then you have a high chance to be hired.
4.) Given that the school already has a staff nurse, you can still be offered a position as an assistant
school nurse. Well, it is still a good preparation for you in this field. Once you earned enough actual
2. experience from being an assistant school nurse, you can always apply to other schools to be a school
nurse.
5.) Being a school nurse doesn’t only mean that you are responsible in the health of the students; but
also, you should set a good example. And since you are in the academe, it is crucial that you also show
that you are competent enough so that students will look upon you. You can become more competent
in your field by taking up your masters degree and by continuously participating in conferences,
seminars and training.
