Today was our last day in Jeju. Jeju boasts a long
history and unique traditional culture from the
prehistoric age to the present day. It has played an
instrumental part in the cultural exchange in
Northeast Asia through the centuries as it is on the
sea-laneslinking China, Japan, Okinawa, Taiwan, and
other countries.
> We checked out from the hotel at 9 a.m. Our first
stop was Jeju Folklore & Natural Museum.
The museum presents the unique history and culture of Jeju in one place. On display are artifacts and relics
excavated from historic sites all over Jeju and objects of historic value from other regions.
> The museumis certainlyanideal place, to
get ourselves acquainted with the history,
culture, heritage and the folklore of Jeju, a
beautiful island in Korea.
IZA
DAY

The whole island can be seen through the
museum's exhibitions of folklore relics and
indigenous plants and animals. The musuem
also contains information on the natural
history of geological features and marine
organisms and recreates the traditional
lifestyle of Jeju islanders.
In the Folklore Exhibition Hall, we saw a
transformation in the lifestyle of Jejudo as
well as Jeju people, when we looked at the
displayed items. It helped us to understand
the ancient lifestyle on Jeju Island by
recapturing Jeju’s traditional housing
architecture, rites of passage, and regional
food specialties.
> Shikin was spotted walking happily with
school kids.
> With so much to see and do on this island,
the places that often get overlooked are
sometimesthe onesworthgoingto check out
most. We went to seek the shade of one of
Jeju’s protected forests. Located in Bonggae-
dong,JejuJeoulmulNatural Forestis billed as
Korea’s number one recreational forest.
Jeolmul, named after an old story that tells of mul (water) being found near a Jeol (temple), has a diverse
selection of facilities suited for everyone's needs. It makes for a great getaway for families and large groups
alike. The place issimplyincredible.Formost,it appears to be an urban park. City dwellers can come here and
eat at a picnic table and watch the kids play on a natural wood jungle gym set or run around the greenery
forest.

forests offer a cooling, rejuvenating
experience. It was chill up there because
of the exquisite harmony of cool side of
the sea breeze blowing.

we rode the bus. Ammar was kind enough to translate the Korean show. From our seats, we could see the
narrow coastal road, hugging the shoreline. Kimchi-shi also pointed out to us, “those are carrots, those are
radish, those are…”.
Later on,Juliaand StephaniataughtusKoreansong, Gom Se Mari (3 Little Bears). The song was popularized in
a Korean drama called Full House.

> We had lunch at a Korean style
restaurant. We ate bibimbap. It is
basically a mixed rice. Besides the
delicioustaste, the dish also looks
very colourful and appealing due
to the variety of ingredients.

“Fingerlickin’good”
We then headed to the Seongeup Folk Village, a 5
minutes ride from the restaurant. The village is an
inhabited old-style thatched roof houses (though
mostlymodernizedonthe inside). Manyof the scenes
in Korean Drama, Dae Jang Geum were filmed here.
Here,informationwithphotosanddescriptions of the
scenesmake iteasierforvisitors to find the locations.
Here, I learned that the gate of a traditional house
consistsof three removable bars. The number of bars
placedrepresentsthe house owners’ timeof return. If
you see one bar, the owners are returning very soon
while twobarsmeansthat youshouldcome back later
in the evening. Three bars then represent that the
owners would only be back after a few days.
The Village shows what Jeju & Korea life was
like a several hundred years ago. The
traditional village is unique in that it is still a
working village. This is no museum – people
still work and live here as they have for
centuries. We also took the opportunity to
experience everyday tasksie spinningrope and
harvesting crops.
> For tourists like us, visiting Jeju-do, a must-see
destination is the traditional housing. Houses are
built with low roofing to protect it against the
strong island wind. This is why they constructed
walls using stones to protect themselves and their
property.
< Our next destination, the picturesque
location of the popular drama All In
starringLee Byung hun and Song Hye Gyo
on Jeju-do'sSeopjikoji coastline makes it
a spot treasured by tourists and
professional photographers.
> Even though the drama for which the spot named ended quite some time ago, we visited the site to take in
the stunning, harmonicviewcreatedbythe juxtapositionof the landandthe sea. Exposingourselves tothe cool
sea breeze and walking along the coast line, one can get lost in the calming atmosphere quite easily.
Withfull chargedof energyandour stomach
filled,itwasthe righttime todo some light
exercise. At3o’clockpm,we startedhiking
SeongsanIlchulbong (Sunrise Peak).
SeongsanIlchulbong is located at the east end of Jeju-do. It rose from the sea in a series of volcanic eruptions
beginning over 100,000 years ago. It is a top attraction and a must visit for visitors to Jeju. It has also been
designatedasaUNESCO WorldNatural Heritage since 2007. It is an extinct volcanic crater which juts out to the
sea. To see the crater, we need to walk up.
> A 180 m hightuff volcano.
Subhanallah,the viewissuperb!

> The view on the way down
>Our visit to Jejudo would not be completed but for a visit to the Haenyeo Museum. It is the home of Jeju’s
most symbolic figure right by the sea.
Diving in the Jeju Sea and gathering seafood for a living, they are
woman divers called haenyeo. The job is demanding as they dive
under water without any special equipment. These women use no
special equipment–justgoggles,fins,andthe airin theirlungs. They
can hold their breath for 2-3 minutes diving to depths at over 30
feet.Everydaytheyplunge intothe dark depths of the sea searching
for anything that can be eaten or sold to support their families. They
scour the oceanfloorin search of seaweed, abalone, octopus, and other
shellfish.
> Saying goodbye to Kim-shi
> At night, we boarded Jeju Air to Seoul
> Safely arrived at Gimpo Airport, heading to our guesthouse in Seoul
> Transferring from Gimpo Airport to Seoul
(http://www.staykorea.co.kr/english)
Our guesthouse Stay Korea was conveniently situated near the Hongik University Station. Stay
Korea Homestay really had a family feel to it-really a warm cost place to stay, and it's not too far from Seoul
City Centre. This particularly welcoming, relaxing and cosy 2 storey guesthouse - managed by a young couple
whospeakEnglish,FrenchandJapanese. The ownerswere superduperfriendly. The ownerswere verynice to
fetch us from the subway station as it was very cold.
There wasa commonkitchenette andloungewithTV onthe first floor and also free internet computers in the
downstairs hallway. Our rooms were large and super clean, coffee and fruit juice were there for 24 hours,
internet was always fast and toilets were clean and well-maintained. There was also a free continental
breakfastservedeverymorningandmanybooks andnovels forexchange onthe shelf. We founditalittle far (a
10 minutes walk to the subway station) and remote but there are abundant food and convenience stores
nearbyso distance---compensated. We were givenourownkeystothe gate and our rooms. So,no curfews, we
can get in anytime we want. The girls occupied rooms downstairs and the boys stayed on the first floor.

  • 1.  Jeju Folklore & Natural Museum  Jeoulmul Natural Forest  Lunch- Bibimbap  Seongeup Folk Village  All In Drama Location  Seongsan Ilchubong  Haenyeo Museum  Staykorea Today was our last day in Jeju. Jeju boasts a long history and unique traditional culture from the prehistoric age to the present day. It has played an instrumental part in the cultural exchange in Northeast Asia through the centuries as it is on the sea-laneslinking China, Japan, Okinawa, Taiwan, and other countries. > We checked out from the hotel at 9 a.m. Our first stop was Jeju Folklore & Natural Museum. The museum presents the unique history and culture of Jeju in one place. On display are artifacts and relics excavated from historic sites all over Jeju and objects of historic value from other regions. > The museumis certainlyanideal place, to get ourselves acquainted with the history, culture, heritage and the folklore of Jeju, a beautiful island in Korea. IZA DAY 5
  • 2. The whole island can be seen through the museum's exhibitions of folklore relics and indigenous plants and animals. The musuem also contains information on the natural history of geological features and marine organisms and recreates the traditional lifestyle of Jeju islanders. In the Folklore Exhibition Hall, we saw a transformation in the lifestyle of Jejudo as well as Jeju people, when we looked at the displayed items. It helped us to understand the ancient lifestyle on Jeju Island by recapturing Jeju’s traditional housing architecture, rites of passage, and regional food specialties. > Shikin was spotted walking happily with school kids. > With so much to see and do on this island, the places that often get overlooked are sometimesthe onesworthgoingto check out most. We went to seek the shade of one of Jeju’s protected forests. Located in Bonggae- dong,JejuJeoulmulNatural Forestis billed as Korea’s number one recreational forest.
  • 3. Jeolmul, named after an old story that tells of mul (water) being found near a Jeol (temple), has a diverse selection of facilities suited for everyone's needs. It makes for a great getaway for families and large groups alike. The place issimplyincredible.Formost,it appears to be an urban park. City dwellers can come here and eat at a picnic table and watch the kids play on a natural wood jungle gym set or run around the greenery forest. > Walkingonthe meanderingpathof Jeju forests offer a cooling, rejuvenating experience. It was chill up there because of the exquisite harmony of cool side of the sea breeze blowing. >The carved wooden dolhareubang complementthe natural timbers well with the facial expressions
  • 4. Kim-shi, ourbusdriverswitchedonthe busTV and letuswatchedStar King,a popularKoranvarietyshow while we rode the bus. Ammar was kind enough to translate the Korean show. From our seats, we could see the narrow coastal road, hugging the shoreline. Kimchi-shi also pointed out to us, “those are carrots, those are radish, those are…”. Later on,Juliaand StephaniataughtusKoreansong, Gom Se Mari (3 Little Bears). The song was popularized in a Korean drama called Full House. Gom se mari ga han jibbeiso Appa Gom,Omma gom, aegi gom Appa gomeun tungtung hae Omma gomeun nal shin eh Aegi gomeun nomu kiyowo Ussu ussu chal~handa Once there were three bears wholivedina cottage Papa Bear Mama Bear Baby Bear Papa Bearwas chubbyand fat Mama Bearwas slenderandtall Baby Bearwas the cutestone of all That's because he wasso small > We had lunch at a Korean style restaurant. We ate bibimbap. It is basically a mixed rice. Besides the delicioustaste, the dish also looks very colourful and appealing due to the variety of ingredients. ShikinandI enjoyedourfoodsomuch > “Fingerlickin’good”
  • 5. We then headed to the Seongeup Folk Village, a 5 minutes ride from the restaurant. The village is an inhabited old-style thatched roof houses (though mostlymodernizedonthe inside). Manyof the scenes in Korean Drama, Dae Jang Geum were filmed here. Here, informationwithphotosanddescriptions of the scenesmake iteasierforvisitors to find the locations. Here, I learned that the gate of a traditional house consistsof three removable bars. The number of bars placedrepresentsthe house owners’ timeof return. If you see one bar, the owners are returning very soon while twobarsmeansthat youshouldcome back later in the evening. Three bars then represent that the owners would only be back after a few days. The Village shows what Jeju & Korea life was like a several hundred years ago. The traditional village is unique in that it is still a working village. This is no museum – people still work and live here as they have for centuries. We also took the opportunity to experience everyday tasksie spinningrope and harvesting crops.
  • 6. > For tourists like us, visiting Jeju-do, a must-see destination is the traditional housing. Houses are built with low roofing to protect it against the strong island wind. This is why they constructed walls using stones to protect themselves and their property. < Our next destination, the picturesque location of the popular drama All In starringLee Byung hun and Song Hye Gyo on Jeju-do'sSeopjikoji coastline makes it a spot treasured by tourists and professional photographers.
  • 7. > Even though the drama for which the spot named ended quite some time ago, we visited the site to take in the stunning, harmonicviewcreatedbythe juxtapositionof the landandthe sea. Exposingourselves tothe cool sea breeze and walking along the coast line, one can get lost in the calming atmosphere quite easily. Withfull chargedof energyandour stomach filled, itwasthe righttime todo some light exercise. At3o’clockpm,we startedhiking SeongsanIlchulbong (Sunrise Peak).
  • 8. SeongsanIlchulbong is located at the east end of Jeju-do. It rose from the sea in a series of volcanic eruptions beginning over 100,000 years ago. It is a top attraction and a must visit for visitors to Jeju. It has also been designatedasaUNESCO WorldNatural Heritage since 2007. It is an extinct volcanic crater which juts out to the sea. To see the crater, we need to walk up. > A 180 m hightuff volcano. Subhanallah, the viewissuperb! Crowdedwithpeopleandalthoughwe endedupslightlydrenched, the walkupwasdefinitelyworthit!
  • 9.
  • 10. > The view on the way down >Our visit to Jejudo would not be completed but for a visit to the Haenyeo Museum. It is the home of Jeju’s most symbolic figure right by the sea. Diving in the Jeju Sea and gathering seafood for a living, they are woman divers called haenyeo. The job is demanding as they dive under water without any special equipment. These women use no special equipment–justgoggles, fins, andthe airin theirlungs. They can hold their breath for 2-3 minutes diving to depths at over 30 feet.Everydaytheyplunge intothe dark depths of the sea searching for anything that can be eaten or sold to support their families. They scour the oceanfloorin search of seaweed, abalone, octopus, and other shellfish.
  • 11. > Saying goodbye to Kim-shi > At night, we boarded Jeju Air to Seoul
  • 12. > Safely arrived at Gimpo Airport, heading to our guesthouse in Seoul > Transferring from Gimpo Airport to Seoul
  • 13. (http://www.staykorea.co.kr/english) Our guesthouse Stay Korea was conveniently situated near the Hongik University Station. Stay Korea Homestay really had a family feel to it-really a warm cost place to stay, and it's not too far from Seoul City Centre. This particularly welcoming, relaxing and cosy 2 storey guesthouse - managed by a young couple whospeakEnglish,FrenchandJapanese. The ownerswere superduperfriendly. The ownerswere verynice to fetch us from the subway station as it was very cold. There wasa commonkitchenette andloungewithTV onthe first floor and also free internet computers in the downstairs hallway. Our rooms were large and super clean, coffee and fruit juice were there for 24 hours, internet was always fast and toilets were clean and well-maintained. There was also a free continental breakfastservedeverymorningandmanybooks andnovels forexchange onthe shelf. We founditalittle far (a 10 minutes walk to the subway station) and remote but there are abundant food and convenience stores nearbyso distance---compensated. We were givenourownkeystothe gate and our rooms. So,no curfews, we can get in anytime we want. The girls occupied rooms downstairs and the boys stayed on the first floor.
