Mission Habitat works in partnership with God and people everywhere to build and renovate decent houses for people to live in. Habitat for Humanity Island County's goal is to eliminate substandard housing and homelessness in Island County. The local chapter was founded in 1998 and has since built 27 homes and served over 60 families. They aim to build 6-8 homes per year, double their funding in 3 years, and double their volunteer pool to meet demand.

Welcome! Introduction & involvement with HHIC Goal for the evening: history, mission statement, vision statement, how we work, and how you can help
The largest misconception of HFHI is that former President Jimmy Carter and his wife founded HFHI, but they did not. The Carters did not get involved with HFHI until 1984 where they lead a group of volunteers in New York City to renovate a six-story building for 19 families which then lead into the development of the Carter Work Project. Which has now become an annual week long event where the Carters lead a group of volunteers in various locations. After visiting Koinonia Farm in 1965 outside of Americus, Georgia Linda & Millard Fuller collaborated with the founder, Clarence Jordan, in developing the concept “Partnership Housing.” The concept centered on those in need of adequate shelter by working side by side with volunteers to build simple, decent homes. The Fullers founded Habitat for Humanity International in 1976. As of today, Habitat for Humanity International has built more than 350,000 houses, sheltering more than 1.75 million people in more than 3,000 communities worldwide Habitat for Humanity is present in 90 countries and in all 50 states
After attending a Habit Global Village Build in 1996, Marlene and Vic Jones established HHIC in 1998 with the support from their pastor. Since then, HHIC has fully built 25 homes locally and 21 homes abroad. They have provided affordable housing for over 60 family members and 32 children
We work through your donations, grants, and volunteer work that help make these homes a reality.
There are three primary requirements in selecting a family: Need, Willingness to Partner, and Ability to Repay Need: Is based on the family’s current housing. If they pay over 50% of their monthly income or rent, live in substandard housing, and/or if they have inadequate housing (meaning that there are more people in the house or it’s not a healthy environment) Willingness to Partner: The selected family is required to complete 500 hours of “Sweat equity” with 100 hours being construction hours and 250 of these hours could be completed by friends/family. They are also required to attend an informational public meeting, participate in an interview and home visit, attend various homeowners education class, and meet with their designated family advisor. This also includes promptly returning complete application to committee. Ability to Repay: As part of the family selection, they are required to provide details about their credit history. They must all have proof of a steady income from 20-50% of Island county median income which is _________to ________.This is to ensure that they can assume the mortgage payments once the house is completed and ready for them to move in. Another essential requirement is that the family selected must live in Island County for at least a year prior to family selection We do not give homes away, we work with the selected family to provide stable housing. We think of it as “A hand up not a hand out.”
The goal is to provide simple, decent, and affordable homes The homes are designed to be small enough to keep construction and maintenance cost down for the future homeowner There is a standard plan that can be revised to accommodate the personal needs of the future homeowner (example: standard house has sharp corners and a family with a disabled child has requested curved corners) Homeowners are encouraged to personalize the home. They select the color, flooring, and other essential details about their home. The homes are built according to the state Green Code, which means that all the appliances and accessories are “green” friendly and will help reduce the monthly utilities bills.
Volunteer your time and services (professional skills) Join the 1000 Friends, which a program where we ask our volunteers to donate at least $50 twice a year Donate quality furniture to our Furniture Store to be sold again and profits going towards future homes Donate your vehicle, boats, motor homes, (either working/dead) to Cars for Homes program with FREE pick-up services. The profit from donation goes towards the local HFH organization. The donated items are either stripped for parts at a recycle center or sold at an auction If you are not a construction type of person, you could always provide meals/beverages/snacks for weekly construction dates and/or special events OR volunteer at the Furniture store. PROFITS GOES TO BUILDING FUTURE HOMES
Furniture Store volunteers help with delivery and pick up all over the island, sales, and Open Monday 1pm-5pm and Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5pm If you are interested in volunteering at the Furniture Store, contact the store manager Whitey
Individuals 18 years old or younger, MUST have complete/submit a Minor Waiver form Work days are between 9:00am-4:30pm, however half days can be arranged. PERSONAL ITEMS: Mark all personal gear brought to the site, leave all personal belongings in car (purse, cell phone, etc), Dress appropriately for the weather (indoor and outdoor delegated tasks), Please wear closed toe shoes SAFETY: The construction manager will be the main contact in regards to safety equipment (helmets and eye protection) All skills welcomed, you can come in and learn. Skilled volunteers help teach others and also do more advance things on the homes. SITE HOST: 1-2hour shifts, checking in the volunteers and making the workers feel welcome when they get to the worksite. You are also responsible for making sure everyone signs in, has signed a waiver, and helping volunteers know where to be. FOOD/LUNCH CREW: Provide “site friendly” lunch/snacks at noon, including setup and clean up SITE MANAGER: An individual who is a professional or skilled tradesman for a specific task. Must be approved by the construction manger prior to volunteering on site. You will be assigned a work crew in which you are responsible to utilize them in completing the delegated task. NAVY BUILDS: A four week partnership with several Navy affiliated groups APOSTLES BUILD: A partnership between 12 churches fundraise and build a home
Volunteer Outreach is a unique opportunity to show your passion for the cause. You can attend farmers markets or other events to help spread the word about Habitat for Humanity. Also, get more volunteers interested in helping. This is a job to help advocate for affordable housing and spread the word to the community.
