2. Mr. Zariful never intended to
become a quantity surveyor,
in fact he wanted to become
a pharmacist.
However, he was able
to make it and had no
choice but to choose
an alternative which
happens to be quantity
surveying. His decision
turns out to be the
right one. Now after
many years of tackling
his job, he manages to
become the employer
of a successful
company –
Z-Arif
Consultant.
THE
QUANTITY
SURVEYOR
3. He advices students who
wishes to pursue quantity
surveying to take a foundation
course rather than pre-
University courses such as A-
levels. This is because a
foundationcourse will expose
students more towards the
buildingindustry and hence,
giving students the chance to
experience more of the
working life so that they won’t
be overwhelmed when going
into the degree course. To
succeed in this field of work,
one should look forward and
embrace challenges rather than
trying to avoid it.
PATHWAY
4. In our interview, the job of a
quantity surveyor may vary
from checking the budget to
measuring
drawings to evaluating the site
to cost-checking and
calculatingthe final cost of a
project. It doesn’t just involve
an office job but also involves
work in the field. In other
words, they have the ‘BEST OF
BOTH WORLDS’.
Not only did he gain his
experience from working, but
also from conferences and by
communicating with other
quantity surveyors making him
more innovative and updated.
Now as a senior surveyor, does
contract issues and is adviser to
troubled clients.
5. In today’s community,
every quantity surveyor
should be a member of
the Board of Quantity
Surveyor to practice as a
‘QS’. The requirements
between countries may
vary.
In terms of the economy, Mr
Zariful,explained how it can
effect him. if the economy is
bad, there will be less demand,
which means less projects, that
can result in a lower income
and vice versa. He also
mentions how, with the
uprising technological age,
machines can easily replace the
quantity surveyors. Hence, he
advised us to always be
innovative, be updated with the
stock market and be teachable.
REALITY
6. At the end of the
day, it’s all
about having
fun along the
way – learning
to work along
side architects,
engineers and
constructors to
create a better
environment for
the community.
Yet one of the
most satisfying
feeling is to be
able to see how
buildings go up
from start to
finish. THE
