What is that?
Effective (Good) Learner 
-Use strategies and knows which strategies they are 
using. (metacognitive) 
-Get feedback 
-Get a good example 
-Problem solver 
-Never give up on a challenge (believe in yourself) 
-If you don’t know what to do, you ask for help (figure it 
out) has ways to get out of the pit. 
-Give ideas 
-study 
-Make connections 
-set goals and reach for them 
-Knows where they are, knows where they are going, and 
how they will get there. 
-makes good choices 
-Participate in activities 
-Look at criteria 
-Their own teachers 
-Can say what they learned. 
-on task focus (you must know when you are not paying 
attention) 
-visualize your learning 
-assessment capable (knows what they need to work on) 
-ask questions 
-Knows mistakes are okay, you learn from your mistakes. 
Okay to say “I don’t know” 
-Supports peers learning

In the Pit 
-What does this mean? You are stuck, in a problem, don’t know what to do. 
-depressed, frustrated, angry, no hope, sad, stressed, irritated, scared. 
-a little bit of struggle and challenge is good. The most learning is happening. 
-When you are stuck what do you do? 
-What do you do when you are in the pit? 
-Have a plan. 
-Ask for help. 
-Use strategies 
-schema
Are you an effective learner? 
See if you can see yourself in the mirror. 
Say, “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who 
is the most effective learner of them 
all?”
