Issues Facing Large Programs
• Funding, funding, funding
• Fellow salaries/fringes (~$250K per fellow)
• Travel to meetings, posters, presentations, etc.
• Cost of GTE
• Identifying research projects and mentors for all
fellows – spreading the wealth
• Application process, logistics of interviewing
dozens of applicants with core committee
• Finding time to conduct semi-annual reviews, etc.
• Ensuring “quietest” fellows do not get lost

Our Approaches
• Funding:
• T32 training grant (3 slots)
• VAMC (4 slots)
• Industry/Endo (1-2 slots, variable year-to-year)
• Hospital (4 slots)
• AGA, ASGE, CCFA grants
• Application process:
• Interviews on Saturdays for General GI
• Interviews based on faculty availability for Advanced
positions (ERCP, EUS, Hepatology)
• Protected time commitment from hospital for PD
• Never underestimate the value of a great coordinator!!
