4. II Peter 1:3-8
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all
things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the
knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and
precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers
of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that
is in the world through lust.
5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith
virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance
patience; and to patience godliness;
7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly
kindness charity.
8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make
you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the
knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
6. Patience Toward God
• Psalm 37:7a – “Rest in the LORD, and wait
patiently for him:”
– God works on a different timetable.
Isaiah 40:31
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew
their strength; they shall mount up with wings as
eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they
shall walk, and not faint.”
Isaiah 49:23b – “…for they shall not be ashamed
that wait for me.”
7. Patience Toward God’s Word
• Luke 8:15 – “But that on
the good ground are
they, which in an honest
and good heart, having
heard the word, keep it,
and bring forth fruit with
patience.”
8. Patience Toward God’s Word
• We live in a “fast food” society, but true
spiritual growth is not instantaneous; it
takes time!
• Hebrews 10:35-36 – “Cast not away
therefore your confidence, which hath
great recompence of reward. For ye
have need of patience, that, after ye
have done the will of God, ye might
receive the promise.”
9. Patience In Prayer
Luke 18:1 – “And he spake a parable unto
them to this end, that men ought always to
pray, and not to faint”
• Now read vv. 2-8 – Patience! Persistence!
10. Patience in Pain
• Realize that part of
developing patience is
pain…truly, “no pain,
no gain”!
11. Patience in Pain
• Romans 5:3-5 – “And not only so, but we
glory in tribulations also: knowing that
tribulation worketh patience; And patience,
experience; and experience, hope: And
hope maketh not ashamed; because the
love of God is shed abroad in our hearts
by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
12. Patience in Pain
• James 1:2-5 – “My brethren, count it all
joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
Knowing this, that the trying of your faith
worketh patience. But let patience have
her perfect work, that ye may be perfect
and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you
lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that
giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth
not; and it shall be given him.”
13. Patience in Injustice
• I Peter 2:19-21 – “For this is
thankworthy, if a man for
conscience toward God endure
grief, suffering wrongfully. For
what glory is it, if, when ye be
buffeted for your faults, ye shall
take it patiently? but if, when ye
do well, and suffer for it, ye take
it patiently, this is acceptable with
God. For even hereunto were ye
called: because Christ also
suffered for us, leaving us an
example, that ye should follow
his steps”
14. Patience Toward Others
Ephesians 4:2 – “With all lowliness and
meekness, with longsuffering,
forbearing one another in love”
• Colossians 3:13 – “Forbearing one
another, and forgiving one another, if
any man have a quarrel against any:
even as Christ forgave you, so also do
ye”
15. Conclusion
• Patience, in all forms, comes from a deeprooted faith in God & His Word.
• Grow in the faith such that you will have
enduring, patient continuance, faithfully in
the Lord, until you leave this earth.
• Christianity is a marathon, not a sprint – it
requires patience…
16. But, it also requires starting:
