1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
As I am working in Photoshop to create my children’s book my production costs will be quite low, as I will not
have to purchase any equipment such as pens and pencils, or costumes if I were to photograph the images
for my book. The only cost that will apply to me will be printing costs when printing the pages of my book. The
cost will depend on how many pages I print.
Available resources:
The resources I will need to use are available for me already at college. These resources are a computer with
the Photoshop application. Due to the available internet services, I will also be using a website online to use
create the specific fonts I want to use in my book, as well as images to help me in creating my own image
ideas. To assist me with planning, I will also be using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint in order to successfully
plan and create my book.
Quantity:
I would like to sell quite a large amount of books. Due to the fact that the story I am producing has been re-
made many times, this may not be possible unless it was a special or limited edition story. However, as the
story has not been re-created as a book recently, but has been re-made as a film with a different and older
audience targeted narrative- many people may want to re-visit their old childhood books and buy them for
their children, so there is a possibility that the book may sell quite well.
2. Audience and Target Market:
I spoke briefly about my audience in my Proposal. The audience of my book is children aged around 5-7, for
any gender- as my book is not gender specific. As the book will be written in English, it will be aimed at
English speaking families. This will mainly be in England, however it will also be targeted to other English
speaking countries such as Ireland, America, Canada and Australia. My target market will be parents or
carers of those who have young children of the age 5-7 as they will be purchasing the book for their children.
Quality Factors:
I want to make my book to the best quality possible, to ensure this I will need to make sure I make appealing
images and that the script is clear and easy to understand for the younger audience. I need to focus on time
keeping as missing a session could put me behind on production. I also need to make sure that I always have
my resources with me (USB) so I can find everything easily to continue with the making of the book without
complications.
Codes of Practice:
Codes of Practice ensure that both the author and the publisher both understand their contract and what
applies to them. This helps to keep both the author and publisher to stay on track, and work together in order
to successfully publish a book. It will cover both legal as well as financial issues, which in my case do not
apply to the work I am doing.
Regulation:
Some children’s books can be very interactive, with different textures, pop-out features and so on. When a
book is very interactive It can be classed as being more of a toy, rather than a book. Books like this have to
comply with the new Toy Safety Directive, to ensure that there is nothing which could fall off, or cause harm to
children, as they would not be able to sell the product if there was a chance a child could get hurt- such as
choking on an item from the book. Not only is the child’s safety important, there is a chance that the
author/publisher could be sued.
3. Copyright:
When making my book I need to consider copyright laws. This could apply to both my images and my fonts.
As I will be using a font that is already online, to publish my book I would need to contact the person who
made the font to see if it was alright for me to use it. With my images, I would need to ask the creator if I could
use their image, or parts of their image in my book. However, as there will be no original images or parts of
images which others have created in my work, this does not apply to me and I do not have to ask for
permission to use their products.
Ethical Issues:
When creating my book I need to consider ethical issues such as religion, race, gender, sexuality and so on.
However some of these, such as sexuality will not apply in my book as it is aimed at children. Certain things
may be deemed as offensive to certain groups of people, so I need to ensure that my book is appropriate for
the large majority of people if not all. One aspect that I have looked at especially is death. The original script
for this story involves a wicked mother/step-mother, who dies at the end. I have changed this so that she does
not die, and that the family are reunited. I have done this for two reasons. The first is to create more of a
happy ending, which is more common and enjoyed with children’s books. The second reason is to ensure
children cannot be upset by the ending as death can be a touchy subject.
4. Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.
Resource:
Do you have
it? What do you need to do to get it?
A computer Yes
Computers are available to use within college in my set
sessions.
Photoshop Application Yes
The computers I will be using in college already have the
Photoshop application installed and are free to use for my
project.
Storyboard Yes
I previously created a storyboard so that I could plan the pages
of my book in advance, in order to save time in production. It is
saved on my USB.
Flat Plan Yes
I also created a flat plan so that I knew how my book would be
set out, which saves time in the production process. It is saved
on my USB.
Script Yes
The script, which I created after reading the original script, will
help to put the story together. It is also on my USB.
Dafont.com Yes
To produce my text, I will be using the online service from
Dafont.com, which I will use to download the font to go into my
book.
USB Yes
My USB will be the most important resource for the production
of my book as it will store everything for my planning and
production processes.
5. Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
In this session I plan to create my first main character.
I will then create my second main character.
I will design the background for my first three scenes.
I will continue with the backgrounds for the first three scenes.
Session 2:
I will create one of the parent characters.
6. I will create the second parent character.
I will change Hansel to be facing the other way, and set the scene so that the family fit around the table
in the house. I will then continue to make the next
I will create a fire object in photoshop, and change the characters eyes so that they are sleeping.
Session 3:
In this session I will prepare page 5, creating 2 birds, eating the crumbs which Hansel has left behind,
with the characters silhouetted in the distance. To show that it is morning I will alter the lightness and
colours of the background.
I will create the backgrounds for pages 6, 7 and 8. I will then begin to create the candy house.
I will continue to create the candy house.
I will change Hansel and Gretel’s positions so that they are facing the other way.
Session 4:
I will add Hansel and Gretel to page 6, making them larger and silhouetting them slightly so that they
face the house. I will then go on to page 7, to alter the house, and show Hansel and Gretel eating a part
of the house.
7. Moving on to page 8, I will create the witch, and position her in front of the house and with the door
photoshopped open.
In this session I will create page 9, as a bedroom scene. I will edit the children into beds with their eyes
closed.
In this session I will create the inside of the witches house for pages 10, 11 and 12, including a stove
and cage.
Session 5:
I will then place the characters in the pages, and on page 11 I will show Gretel pushing the witch into
the stove.
For this session I will change Hansel and Gretels position again to facing away as they go home.
I will create backpacks and place them onto the characters in this session.
For this session I will reuse the first page’s background, place the characters into the scene and create
a roast chicken to place on the table.
Session 6:
In this session I will create my final page, which is a blank colour, and then proceed to create my front
page. I will use page 6, with some changes to create this.
8. In this session I will begin to add my text to the pages.
In this session I will continue to add my text to the pages.
In this session I will continue to add my text to the pages.
Session 7:
In this session I will add my text to my front page, as well as reading through and checking the text on
my other pages.
I will make any alterations to text in this session, with positioning and colour.
9. Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Wires on the floor.
I can prevent this by ensuring that I do not have any wires
or cables running along the floor where it may be possible
for myself, or another person to trip over.
Bags and personal items on the floor.
Again, I can prevent this by making sure that I place my
bag out of the way so that no one can trip over and hurt
themselves.
Eye strain from computers.
To ensure that I do not cause harm to my eyes by looking
at the computer screen for too long I will take regular
breaks to rest my eyes.
10. Water/liquid damage to computers.
To ensure that the computer I am using, as well as the
ones around me do not get damaged from liquids, I will
keep any kind of drink away from them. If I need to drink
some water I will move away from the computers.
Back strain from sitting too long.
To stop myself from hurting my back from sitting In the
same place for too long, I will make sure to take regular
breaks.
