2. Masculine colors have been used in order to
create an aesthetic which fits the theme of
the instruction manual. Batman is often
associated with a young male audience, so
in this reason the blacks fit well. To add to
this, batman’s outfit and car are black, so by
using the color black it adds continuity to
the manual. In some ways, the lack of any
vibrant color deducts from the eye-
catchiness of the instruction set, as it looks
slightly drab and old, but this is a trade off
they’ve chosen to take.
The image of the ‘batmobile’
is relevant to the instructions
given, and means that the
user will instantly become
engaged in the instructions. It
also helps to fill out some
page space, and generally
makes it look more visually
pleasing.
The font used here is bold and large,
and is also in capital letters. All these
factors allow for clear and easy
reading, meaning that it’s a lot easier
to read the instructions out, making
the experience generally more
pleasant for the audience. It also helps
to symbolize the simplicity of the task
in hand.
Numbers have been used
here in order to add to
the simplicity of the
instructions and the way
in which they’re set out.
By clearly labeling each
step of the process with
numbers, it means that
the text can be separated
into digestible chunks
rather than one big pile
of text.
The Batman logo is
clearly displayed in the
corner of the page, which
instantly establishes the
fact that the instructions
are based on the
‘batmobile’, and is an
easily recognizable logo
for anyone who has read
a Batman comic or
watched a Batman film.
The general layout of these instructions is very
minimal and not cluttered. This really helps
with something like an instruction manual as
it’s often something which can be a stressful
process, so by presenting it in a neat and not
overwhelming manner it can really help.
3. Color plays a key role in this particular example,
with vibrant colors used in order to make the
cover look more visually appealing. This works
well for this particular piece and fits in nicely
with the despicable me theme, which is a film
that when watched has a very vibrant and
diverse color scheme, not a dull or morbid one.
Reds have been used on all of the ‘do
not texts’ This has been done in order
to reinforce the command, and to let
people not that is it not a good idea to
do these things. To add to this point,
capital letters have been used in order
to further accentuate the fact that
these things should not be done, and
makes the words more bold on the
page.
Despite the seriousness of the
text, it aims to feel more light
hearted by using a children’s
themed set of images of
‘minions’ from the film dipsicable
me. This makes it easier to digest
the factual text, and allows
readers to take in the
information in a more relaxed
manner. To add to this point, the
despicable me theme also
directly relates to what the text
talks about, as minions were
used as workers in the films
(clumsy ones, hence
demonstrating how not to
behave in the workplace).
Text has been spaced out into
easily digestible chunks across
the page. Rather than having
one big clump of text with the
do’s and don’ts they’ve
presented it in a more
infographical way, and this works
well with the images and allows
the reader to take in facts at a
leisurely pace and not have it all
crammed in their face at once.
4. The three most important words
on the leaflet have been made to
stand out by being an
substantially larger font size than
any of the other bits of text. Not
only this, but they’ve been space
out over three lines, meaning
that they take up a large
proportion of the leaflet. The use
of capital letters here further
helps to draw attention to the
title.
The word ‘fun’ has been used to
instantly make the leaflet appear more
appealing, and is a word that grabs a
viewer’s attention. If the title was to
have said ‘charity day’ instead, It would
not have had the same effect.
‘Free entry’ – The leaflet gives
an instant promise to it’s
readers that they will be able
to attend the event for free,
again the text used here it
large to make it stand out
amongst other assets. It is also
further spruced up by a nice
graphic which works a border
for it.
They've placed their logo on
the work here, which allows
them to establish what the
piece of writing (in this case
leaflet) is about, and enforced
their own brand on the
product, in this case, not in a
commercial manner due to
the fact that it’s a non profit,
but in an attempt to promote
the organisation.
To go along with the idea of fun, they’ve used a rainbow
style graphic that promotes thoughts of excitement and
happy thoughts. It is common to see small icon style
graphics like this on pieces of factual writing, and they help
to give the text more body, and do bring the topic to life.
Similarly to in the previous slide,
they’ve chosen to present the
text in a way which is slightly
easier to digest. By creating
colourful boxes around different
attractions on offer they can do
this and make it all much easier
and pleasant for the reader to
take in. This is especially
important on something like a
leaflet, where people aren’t going
to want to spend 20 minutes
finding the information they
need. They want to just be able
to easily pick it out and find out
about whatever it is the leaflet it
promoting.
