As of 1990 , upon a revised analysis of the stratigraphy of its site, it was estimated to have been carved between 24,000 - 22,000 BCE . Very little is known about its origin, method of creation, or cultural significance. The Venus is not a realistic portrait but rather an idealization of the female figure. Her vulva , breasts , and swollen belly are very pronounced, suggesting a strong connection to fertility . Her tiny arms are folded over her breasts, and she has no visible face, her head being covered with what might be coils of braids , eyes, or a kind of headdress. The lack of a face has prompted some archaeologists and philosophers to view the Venus as a "universal mother." The nickname, urging a comparison of this rather obese figurine to the classical image of "Venus", causes resistance in some modern analysis. "The ironic identification of these figurines as 'Venus' pleasantly satisfied certain assumptions at the time about the primitive, about women, and about taste," Christopher Witcombe has noticed [1] . At the same time there is professional reluctance to identify her as an Earth Mother goddess of paleolithic Old Europe .[ citation needed ] Some suggest that her corpulence would represent high status in a hunter-gatherer society, and that beside her obvious fertility she could be an emblem of security and success.[ citation needed ] The statue's feet don't allow it to stand on its own. Due to this it has been speculated that it was meant to be held, rather than simply looked at.
The Upper Paleolithic is a food gathering age. The world’s oldest art begins in the Upper Paleolithic Age. Mythologist Joseph Campbell called caves, such as the ones in the text, “the Great Temple Caves.” The painted areas of the caves were generally not the living areas, but rather, they were the deep and inaccessible areas. Small stone lamps, fueled by animal fat would have been the only light. These and many other factors have led scholars to believe that the first sculpture and paintings were ritualistically and not aesthetically motivated. They were, in the words of Joseph Campbell, “Prime Symbols.”
The Neolithic is a food producing age. Food production allowed larger and more permanent communities, which, in turn, allowed occupational specialization, hierarchic societies and megalithic construction. The continuous lintel at Stonehenge is unique among all henges . Others henges are upright stones or posts, but without the lintels.
Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire , about 8 miles (13 km) north of Salisbury . One of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones . Archaeologists believe the standing stones were erected around 2200 BC and the surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC . The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO 's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury henge monument , and it is also a legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument . Stonehenge itself is owned by the State and managed by English Heritage while the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust .
The photo above is a depiction of four different anthromorphs with conjoined hands. The anthromorphs are a small section of a fairly large panel in which there are other figures that continue the line. However, they are not included in this photograph. According to experts, this type of rock art depiction could represent the essence of family or of dancers. The figures could be dancing as they all have essentially flexible bodies and reflect movement. The anthromorphs are pictured in hand-holding strings and they express a gaiety of form and movement due to the repetition of shapes. Giving the dancing effect. The string could also be interpited as family. The larger anthromorph could represent a person of higher familial ranking, while, the other smaller figures could represent the younger family members or those with less life experiences. The conjoined hands would then represent a union or a bond to each of the other members.http://www.moffatsd.org/moffat_hs/rockart/vermillion%201.html
