With society’s dependence on computers, it is no surprise that the program at Centennial
College that teaches students to work as computer systems technicians, field service
representatives, network technicians, network technical support specialists, help desk
support and technical support is one of its most popular choices.
The Computer Systems Technician in Ontario is open to anyone who has completed an
Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or has mature student status (19
years or older) and has completed the following academic requirements: English Grade 12
C or U, or equivalent (minimum grade required) or is willing to take the Centennial College
English Skills Assessment for Admission; and Mathematics Grade 11 M or U, or 12 C or U,
or equivalent (minimum grade required) or is willing to take a Centennial College
Engineering Math Skills Assessment for Admission. It is worth noting that qualified college
or university graduates with a background in networks gain direct admission into semester
three of this two-year program and receive their Computer Systems Technician -
Networking diploma in two semesters.
Students who attend the entire two-year offering enjoy lessons in the latest in
computer systems and network technology that reflect the ever-growing
innovations of the digital revolution. Because they train from Centennial College’s
Progress Campus, students also have the advantage of learning these topics in
labs and classrooms that are equipped to handle the curriculum and include the
equipment that allows students to learn through a practical approach. As such,
before they even think about launching their careers, students become
comfortable with working inside PC hardware, the details of operating systems (to
have full human control of the computing and communicating technology), and
putting together and maintaining systems that will empower users in their
creative, business and communication activities.
The practical approach in this offering is so strong that students, during their final
semester, even complete a Technician Project course. This course aims to ensure that
students have a comprehensive understanding of how to design and research and
implement Local and Wide Area Networks (LANs and WANs). As such, they learn about the
equipment and technologies used in LANs and WANs by walking through the features and
functions of these devices and under what circumstances each device can be implemented.
They also learn cabling standards and appropriate design parameters for various types of
media and topologies and be introduced to wireless technologies as well as a variety of
high-speed Internet access options. As a real life component, they are also faced with
challenges involved in creating a network design that meets the needs of the users of
today’s LANs and WANs. Over the course of the class, students complete many hands-on
projects and case projects that provide them with real experience in using some of the
tools involved in network design and implementation.
