• Piracy is the act of robbing or
stealing.
• Sites that allow you to
download copyrighted goods
for free upset the government
and companies.
• Many of the laws dealing with
Internet Privacy are because
of piracy.
• Millions of dollars are
spent/lost because of piracy.

5. SOPA (Stop Internet Piracy Act)
• Goal: Stop Piracy
• Wanted a bill put
into place that gave
government the
right to shut down
sites.
• Tell sites like Google
that it needs to
remove ability to
search site. 5 Days

• Can not go to court
to fight for it.
6. Alternatives
• Fred Wilson – “Blacklist and Whitelist”/Good
guys vs. bad.
• SOPA dropped because it would cripple the
internet.
• ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement)

• Passed in USA in 2011
• Worldwide government attempt to take
control of copyrighted goods, medicine, etc.
• Can bypass anything and gives power to
ISP( Internet Service Provider) to act as
“Internet Police”
• Has been voted on behind closed doors, no
public action.
• Unsure how it will effect USA Laws.
