4. Cricket
• Cricket is abat-and-ballgame played between two teams
of eleven players on a cricket field, at the centre of which is
a rectangular 22-yard-long pitch with a wicket(a set of
three wooden stumps) sited at each end. One team,
designated the batting team, attempts to score as
many runs aspossible, whilsttheir opponents field. Each
phase of play is calledan innings.

5. Beginning Of Indian Cricket
• The entire history of cricket in Indiaand thesub-continent as a wholeis
basedon the existence anddevelopmentof the British Rajviathe East
IndiaCompany.
• TheBritish brought cricket toIndiain theearly 1700s,with thefirst cricket match
played in1721.[10] In1848,the Parsi communityinBombayformedtheOriental
Cricket Club,the first cricket clubto beestablished by Indians.Afterslow
beginnings,the Europeans eventuallyinvited theParsis to playamatchin
1877.[11]By1912,the Parsis, Sikhs,Hindus andMuslims ofBombayplayed a
quadrangulartournamentwith theEuropeans every year.[11] In theearly 1900s,
someIndianswent ontoplayfor theEnglandcricket team.

6. FIRSTMATCH OF INDIA
In 1877 the Parsees beat the Europeans, and
flushed with success, planned tours of Australia
and England.Australia fellthrough, but in 1878
they did visit England, winningone outof 28
games;two years later they returned, winning
eightout of 31 with MehlasaParvi taking170
wickets at under 12.

7. The First Match…
• In1889 anamateur English side travelled to India. They
played almost exclusively Europeansides but their one
defeat came against the Parsees,Pavritaking nine
wickets. In1892 they returnedand sufferedtwo defeats
in 20 games - again losing to the Parsees.Theyalso played
an All-India side, but the reality was that was almost
entirely made up ofEuropeansas well.

8. First Test series in India
• In 1933, the first Test series in India was played between India
and England with matches in Bombay, Calcutta (now Kolkata)
and Madras (now Chennai). England wonthe series. The
Indian team continued to improve throughout the 1930s and
'40s but did not achievean international victory during this
period.In the early1940s, India didn't play any Testcricket
due to the SecondWorld War.ries2-0.[15

9. India’s Cricket in 20th Century
. In 1911 and All-India side toured England underthe
Maharajah of Patiala -with moderate success -
and by the late 1920s the performance of the side
against an MCC XI led by Arthur Gilligan
persuaded the ICC that theymight be ready.

10. Formation of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)
• Theone stumbling block was that India did not have a central
body running the game, and so in 1928 the Board of Control
for Cricket in India came into being. India were dueto make
their Test debut in 1930-31 but extreme nationalist sentiment
and activity at the time led tothe trip being cancelledand so it
was at Lord's 18 months later that India joinedthe Test ranks.

11. First series as anindependentcountry
• The team's first series as an independent country was in
late 1947 against Sir Donald Bradman's Invincibles (a
name given to the Australia national cricket team of that
time). It was also the first Test series India played which
was not against England. Australia wonthe five-match
series 4–0, with Bradman tormenting the Indian bowling
in his final Australian summer.[16] India subsequently
played their first Test series at home not against England
against the WestIndies in 1948. West Indies won the 5-
Test series 1-0

12. First series as an independentcountry
• India recorded their first Test victory, in their 24th match,
against England at Madras (now Chennai) in
1952.[18] Later in the same year, they won their first Test
series, which was against Pakistan.[19] They continued
their improvement throughout the early 1950s with a
series win against New Zealand in 1956. However, they
did not win again in the remainder of the decade and lost
badly to strong Australian and English sides. On 24
August 1959, India lost by an innings in the test to
complete the only 5-0 whitewash ever inflicted
by England.

13. The Story Of World Cup…
With the elevation of Sri Lanka to Test status, only one place was
available through qualification at the ICCTrophy, held in
England in 1983. Thenewcomers, Zimbabwe, dominated the
competition, defeating Bermuda in the final. There was a
change offormat, with again two groups of four, but this time
they played each othertwice each,thus doubling the number
of matches played. The West Indies, still with Greenidge,
Haynes, Richards and Lloyd at the
top of the order, and Marshall, Roberts, Garnerand Holding
forming a strong paceattack, werehot favorites.

14. INDIA WON FIRST WORLD CUP
• The 1983 Cricket World Cup (officially the Prudential
World Cup) was the 3rd edition of the ICC Cricket
World Cup tournament. It was held from 9 June to 25
June 1983 in England and Wales and was won by India.
Eight countries participated in the event. The 1983
World Cup was full of dramatic cricket all through the
tournament. And India won the nfirst world cup and
the im dia became the champions

15. 1985–86 to 2000 :-
Bombay continued its dominance of
Indian domestic cricket with only
Karnataka and Delhi and some other
team which were able to mount any
kind of challenge during this period.
India enjoyed two international
highlights. In 1971, they won a Test
series in England for the first time ever,
surprisingly defeating Ray Illingworth's
Ashes winners. In 1983, again in
England, India were surprise winners of
the 1983 Cricket World Cup.

16. 1985–86 to 2000 :-
From the1993–94 season,the Duleep Trophywas converted
froma knockout competition to a league format.
Several team names and spellings were altered during the
1990s whentraditional Indian nameswere introduced to
replace thosethat were associated with the BritishRaj. Most
notably, Bombaybecame Mumbai and the famous venue
of Madrasbecame Chennai.
InIndia Duleep Trophyand Ranji Trophybecame famous.
India has got the chancetotake tour with many countrieslike
Australia, SriLanka, Pakistan, New Zealand, England, South
Africa, West Indies and Zimbabwe. Most of the tourswere
won by India. All the matcheswere played in India.

17. 21st century :-
The BCCI tinkered withthe DuleepTrophyin the 2002-03season. The original
zonalteams were replacedby five newteams called Elite A, Elite B, Elite C,
Plate A and PlateB. These teamswere constructed fromthe newElite Group
and PlateGroup divisions whichhad been introducedinto the Ranji Trophy
that season. However, this format lasted for onlyone seasonas it was felt
that the newteams lacked a sense of identity. From the 2003-04 season, the
fiveoriginal zonal teams competed along witha sixthguest teamwhichwas
a touring foreign team. The first guest teamwasEnglandA in 2003-04.

18. 21st century :-
Mumbai hascontinued its dominance ofthe domestic scene
intothe 21st centuryby winning the Ranji Trophyfive
times in thefirst decade.
India won theinaugural ICCWorld T20 in 2007.India was
the first Sub-continental team to win a Test match at the
WACAin January2008 against Australia.
India won theCricket World Cup in 2011, the first time
since 1983 - they beat Sri Lanka in the final held
in Mumbai.
