Learning Outcomes
 Upon completion of the course students will be able to apply graphical tools for data
presentations. (I.D.2.)
 Upon completion of the course students will be able to apply policies and procedures to
ensure the accuracy and integrity of health data both internal and external to the health
system. (III.H.1.)
 Upon completion of the course students will be able to organize and facilitate meetings.

 Upon completion of the course students will be able to utilize tools and techniques to

Introduction
Regardless of what career path you are choosing in healthcare, each role must master
critical thinking skills. In order to prepare you for real world experience, do not expect
every test question to be multiple choice out of textbook questions!
Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement is a systematic approach to
measure and provide exceptional service and continually look for ways to improve.

COURSE MATERIALS
 To be successful, you will need the current materials
for the course and the ability to do internet research
with high speed internet capability.
 NOTE: You will be required to have a web cam to
complete a minimum of one exam a semester in
Blackboard starting Fall 2016.

An instructor is not a mind reader so we don’t know the difference between a student
struggling with course material, having a personal issue or simply dropping out of the
course without formally doing so. It’s the student’s responsibility to have timely
communication!
COURSE Email
• The Course Email tab will show you messages
that occur within the course and course
members.
• This can be helpful for group assignments,
however, please follow normal guidelines for
emailing your instructor from your student
email. This will ensure a more timely response
to your emails as the course email may not be
checked as frequently.

Don’t forget to ALWAYS use your student email
for correspondence! Do not use your personal email
address for correspondence!
•Note: More assignments will open as the semester progresses,
•but working ahead is helpful!
COURSEWORK
• All coursework is found in Blackboard under the
“Start Working” tab
• You may be provided with a course schedule or
“Course Overview” to give you an overall layout of
all the coursework for the semester. This will be
located in the Info/ Requirements tab in your course
in Blackboard.
• Regardless of the anticipated due dates on the course
overview, ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE ON OR BEFORE
THE DATE AND TIME LISTED FOR EACH ASSIGNMENT!

•Due dates and times may vary, watch
carefully!
•Late work, if accepted with prior
approval, will only be accepted twice in
the semester and points deducted
accordingly. There is no automatic
acceptance of late work.
•Assignments vary in requirements from
group assignments, to research papers,
essays, course projects, online exams,
etc. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS

PROCTORED EXAMS
• Expect to have at least one exam during the
semester proctored.
• You will be given additional information ahead of time as
the course progresses.
• Proctored exams will use ProctorU software (or other
proctoring product used by the college) that requires a
mandatory webcam for completion.
• You are not able to test on smart phones.
• You should consistently use the same type of device for testing –
desktop computer vs tablet, etc.

“I can’t get into my test because it requires a password and I didn't know what a
proctor was” is never an acceptable excuse to miss an exam.
FORUM DISCUSSIONS
• Forums allow students in the online environment to exchange
information like that in the classroom.
• All students are expected to participate in the forums, which
are found under the “Discuss” tab in your Blackboard course.
• Discussion forum assignments will be posted under Start Working
tab and linked to the corresponding topic found in the Discuss tab.
Points will be assessed accordingly and will show up in the My
Grades section. Not participating negatively impacts your
grade!
• See the course Netiquette section in the Info/Requirements tab for
guidelines on appropriate postings. You are expected to use
appropriate Grammar, Spelling and complete sentences!
• Expect “Post-First” topics that will only allow you to see other posts in
the course only after you have first posted your own response.
• Forums not completed by the deadline are zeros and are not made up
as late work.

GRADEBOOK
  NOTE: Blackboard will likely show you your score out of completed work, not the 
total in the course. For example, if you took two tests worth 50 points and you 
scored a 40 on both, then you would have an 80% showing (80 points out of 100 
points). The system is showing what you literally earned on the work completed, 
but doesn't reflect the totality of points in the course. So if the course total was 
500 points for 10 assignments, then technically, you've got a 16% in the course (80 
out of 500 points total), which is an F instead of an A  in the whole course (80 out 
of only 100 points is for 2 tests, not all 10 assignments). Watch this closely.
• The “My Grades” tab contains all the assignments for the
course and shows the overall grade as it is calculated.
• Each assignment is weighted individually and will show its
contribution to the overall grade in the course.
• The final exam (and midterm, if applicable) will be weighed
heavier than the other assignments in the course.
• Contact your instructor if you find discrepancies.
COURSE ANNOUNCEMENTS
•Any announcements will be posted under the Course 
Announcements link in the left sided navigation pane in 
Blackboard for the individual course. This will notify you of any 
updates in the course or helpful information such as upcoming 
events. You should check for new announcements each time 
you log in.
•The course Welcome tab and Info/Requirements tab will 
include a variety of information. You must review all tabs and 
information in the course; the Welcome page is the default 
tab.

CAHIIM accreditation outcomes.
The course Communication Expectations including course and email 
communication, and Netiquette. 
You will also find additional supplemental material here for adjuncts to the 
course, extra weblinks and additional plagiarism examples and citation 
resources.
Any additional instructions specific to the course and other useful information 
may be found here.
•The “Class Hints” tab has additional suggestions to be successful in the 
course, including examples of acceptable work!! Incomplete sentences and 
poor grammar is not appropriate!

• Contact Sarah Brown if you have virtual campus questions. 
• Contact your Instructor for issues in the course.
•  If you accidently got kicked out of an exam or you cannot see an 
assignment, contact your instructor. 
• Contact your Program Director for issues in the program.
• Do not email everyone enrolled in the course in the faculty role.  There 
are reasons there may be more than one faculty person a course they 
are not teaching. You will not get your questions answered faster by 
those not teaching.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
•Ideally, I would not burden students with worrying about formal 
MLA and APA citation formats. After all, I’m not an English 
professor, nor you an English major.
•Unfortunately, academic honesty violations from blatant plagiarism 
to inadequate citations providing no way of distinguishing what 
source came from where, if references are even listed to begin with, 
are an increasing burden. 
•You will be required to formally cite all your work, or get a zero. I 
will not spend extensive amounts of time researching information, 
writing up academic honesty violations and teaching the basics of 
grammar and English. Use the resources posted in the course, as 
well as the Library, if you need assistance. If you are still unclear or 
need assistance with a citation, ask me and let’s find the right 
answer before you submit an incomplete assignment.

DISABILITY GUIDELINES
If you need special accommodations, review the information in the
course regarding the ADA statement.
Contact information is listed under the “Welcome” tab in the
course under the “ADA-Student Disability Services” link.
You will need to make the appropriate arrangements and provide
the necessary information to the ADA representative so that your
instructor can make appropriate and necessary accommodations.

SUCCESS
• The only reason to fail this class would be lack of work
completion and participation.
• Do the assignments yourself, as cheating will be revealed
during your exams and can be reason for dismissal from the
Program. It is necessary to do the work yourself as the
national exam is comprehensive from all your coursework.
• Please review the Academic Honesty policy in the student
handbook.
