Sheridan Correctional Center:Therapeutic Programs Jessie McHale
The programs at Sheridan Correctional Center are the largest therapeutic programs offered in the Nation.
Components of the program  Orientation Job placement assistance Intensive release supervision Substance abuse counseling & treatment Educational & vocational training Clinical case management
Eligibility requirements  Adults must be seventeen years old or up. All participants a required to serve between 9 & 24 months in IDOC.    Must be a male in need of treatment. Eligible participants will be based on an assessment.
Participating organizations  The Gateway Foundation The Safer Foundation Vocational Training Provided by various institutions
The gateway foundation  This particular foundation provides all participants with drug and alcohol treatment. Stages Of Rehabilitation: Confidential Screening Interview Intake Assessment Health History Physicians Review
Treatment plan  Education Group therapy Individual therapy Self-help Aftercare plan Follow up treatment
The safer foundation  Provides job preparedness & placement programming Provides case managers who work with clients for approximately two years. The case manager is responsible for assessing and referring clients to needed services.
provided by the safer foundation  Case management services Mental health services Substance abuse treatment Family support services Ability to pay rent, restitutions and taxes Clients are still Illinois inmates. They are required to participate in a minimum of 35 hours per week involvement in: Employment Education Life skills Community service Daily house assignments Each individual client receives:
Vocational Training  Participants in the vocational training must have: GED or High School Diploma Pass a test of basic adult education These classes are offered 5 times a year and last for 8 weeks

Conclusion  If more prisons around the United States offered inmates a chance at programs similar to Sheridan’s, perhaps the recidivism rate would go down and inmate would have an easier transition from prison to outside life.
