8. The Mayans Add these territories to your map. Can you work out where it is? Technically, the Mayan Empire had died out before the Europeans arrive but people still occupied this area.

16. Sir Walter Raleigh was an early British explorer popularly credited with introducing the potato and tobacco into Europe.

17. The English focussed their attentions on North America for colonisation. Privateers like Sir Francis Drake would attack Spanish ships transporting gold.

18. Early English attempts to colonise America failed especially at Roanoke Island – the last colony disappeared!

20. The Spanish The Spanish were to destroy the great civilisations of South America. With them they brought disease to which the native tribes had no immunity. It is calculated that 90% of the population of South America died as a result. The Spanish would need a new workforce...
