Homework As A Good Thing Essay
Roth, Grace

Abstract
Homework has been considered apart of every child's learning experience in America, but there are
many downsides to homework. Homework prevents children from exploring the world they live in,
besides just what they learn in the classroom and prevents many other activities. Along with this,
homework can be very unhealthy is child's life due to the amount of stress it causes. There is also
evidence that suggests homework has no affect on learning and in many cases is counter productive.
Homework causes many conflicts within families and is in many households left to the parents and
not the students. The evidence of homework being a good thing is outweighed by the evidence that
shows how homework can be a negative thing in many students lives.

Pros And Cons Of Homework Essay
Does homework really help or does it not help? Research shows, homework does not help students,
parents, or teachers. Some people may think it does help, but from research it proves that homework
does not help. One reason why it does that is because it is bad for health. Then, another reason why
it doesn't help students, parents, or teachers is because it is not beneficial.
To begin with, one reason why homework doesnt help students, parents, or teachers is because it is
bad for health. One reason why it is bad for health is because it causes anxiety/stress. Too much
homework can damage students health by making anxiety and stress, according to
thecaseforandagainsthomework.com. Another reason why anxiety and stress is bad for you is
because you have so much stress you go really fast on your homework and you do really bad. I
have had that happen to me and it is not good. If that always happens then that could really affect
your grade. Then, the last reason why anxiety and stress is bad is because, anxiety and stress is a
mental thing and if you keep on having it it could damage your brain, according to the website
sciencedaily.com . Having your anxiety and stress damage your brain over homework is just crazy.
Another reason why homework is bad for health is because you can have anger. Having anger when
you are doing homework is not good. For instance, one thing about having anger during homework
is that some people can get really mad because they donВґt know how to do their

Excessive Amount Of Homework On Students Essay
Many teachers assign large amounts of homework to students. Unfortunately this causes a lot of
stress, loss of time, or decrease in homework quality and effectiveness. Too much homework is not
worth the extra effort put out by teachers and students, and teachers should take consideration to the
well–being of the students by encouraging them to learn and get the schoolwork done effectively and
correctly. Student's careers and lives often depend on what they learn in school, and what is taught
can make a huge impression on their opinions and attitudes, so it is imperative that they are taught in
a manner that is effective and understandable. Large amounts of homework are not the most effective
ways to teach. Excessive amounts of homework are not the effective way of helping students learn
and remember their material. The goal of a teacher is to teach and to encourage learning that the
students can use for the rest of their lives, but some teachers seem to feel that more work assigned
will mean more information remembered. However, it is more efficient to work with the students
strengths and encourage them to learn in ways that are the best for them. If a student's science
teacher assigns four chapters of reading and twenty questions for each chapter, the math teacher
assigns three chapters with thirty questions for each, and the literature teacher assigns chapters one
through twelve of Pride and Prejudice the student will focus more on getting through the assignment

The Importance Of Homework Essay
The equation isn't adding up: why too much homework is bad for the teenage brain.
High school students today are suffering from the pressure of grades, sports, sleep, and keeping up
with a social life while going to school a average of five days a week. Parents and teachers
sometimes wonder why teenagers are so crabby or tired and the answer is no time for ourselves.
Today in schools the average amount of homework a typical high school student gets a night is
estimated at 3.5 hours. That is spaced out between 5–6 classes which a student has to remember each
of the subjects throughout the day to understand and complete the homework. This is after a long
day at school learning about what our homework will be later, when half of the class time should be
set for finishing our homework in each class.
A survey was proposed by the National Federation of State High School Associations that, an
average of 7.9 million students participate in some type of sport outside of school. There are only
a estimated of 15.1 million students attending high schools in the U.S today, which means over half
of students are not just "students". Some high school's are concluding that if kids spend more time
on sports, students spend less time on homework, meaning that is why they are not getting it done.
Teachers are not aloud to conclude how us as students, spend our time outside of school because
we deserve to have fun hobbies outside of being in a block building a majority of our day.

Homework Essay
Definition of homework: Tasks assigned to students by school teachers that are intended to be
carried out during non–school hours. Why do we have homework? What are the benefits of
homework? Is there such thing as too much homework? Homework helps you to gain, and retain
more knowledge than would be possible with only classroom work, this is a huge reason students get
homework. Homework does actually have benefits, it teaches a host of important life skills, from
responsibility and time management in prioritizing and organizing. But, how much is too much
homework? That depends on multiple complex or elaborate factors, including the singular
intelligence or capability of the child, type of classes, and available time. If you do have a lot...show

That depends on multiple complex or elaborate factors, including the singular intelligence or
capability of the child, type of classes, and available time. I'm afraid some people after a certain
amount of time doing homework, they begin to shut down. However, there have been studies that
show how outside of school learning improves in–class learning, and I agree with that. Without
homework, I'd forget part of what we learned the previous day the minute my head hit the pillow.
But, if you must skip a simple 90 minutes of soccer practice because homework is taking two hours
longer than you thought, there's a problem. If you do have a lot of homework at a time, it helps to
be organized. Prioritizing can help you to complete your homework assignments with minimal stress.
"A poll conducted for the Associated Press earlier this year found that about 57 percent of parents
felt their child was assigned about the right amount of homework. Another 23 percent thought it was
too little, 19 percent thought it was too much." K–2 works on homework for about 10–20 minutes a
night. 3–6 graders have about 30–60 minutes a night usually. When you get into junior high you'll
have about 90 minutes. Students who are in college have around 90–150 minutes a night! Do you
now understand why we students have homework? What are the benefits of homework? And if there

Homework: Beneficial or Not?
What is homework? Most students might say that homework is a time waster and is unrelated to
learning. Both are logical statements in the eyes of the average student, but what are the facts and
why is homework part of our school curriculum? Homework has been a standing tradition in
America since the 1950's due to the education war with the Soviets. Ever since the ending of the
Cold War in the early 1990's, the American consensus openly welcomed homework as a part of
school curriculum. Homework is in our modern American roots, and it is so effective it has stayed
in our foundation. Homework is beneficial to young scholars in our school system to this date: it is
helpful and beneficial in the way to reinforce knowledge learned in schools, it provides clarity and
room for the short class schedule, and it also forces the need to use responsibility and time
management.
Reviewing and reinforcing topics learned in school is an important way to clarify and to extend the
realm of comprehension that students need in order to pass standardized tests with flying colors!
Some students may not fully understand the topic, such as "systems of equations" in math, and may
not notice their ignorance for a certain part until they try to do their homework. Of course, that is
why there are teachers and not textbooks that stare at you in class, however, learning and
understanding topics on your own during silence and solidarity may be beneficial to most students.

Homework Is Unnecessary And A Waste Of Time
If you think back to when you were in school, the homework you have been given has helped you
in some ways. Your teachers most likely gave you the homework for a real purpose besides to be
mean. Homework includes many benefits after doing it. Some people think that homework is
extremely important and necessary. While most students and some adult think that homework is
completely unnecessary and a waste of time. In my opinion, teachers should continue to give
students homework if they do not already because homework is very beneficial after completing it
thoughtfully. I also completely disagree with people that think homework is completely unnecessary
and that it is a waste of time. I believe that homework is the exact opposite. There are many benefits
of doing homework. Homework can also help practice, review, reinforce, and extend the material
learned in class. It can also enhance student education. Homework can also teach students life skills
that will be helpful later on in life. The United States Department of Education wrote, "Homework
can have many benefits for... children.... Homework can help students develop study skills that will
be of value even after they leave school." Homework will only be helpful after doing it. Diane
Ravitch, a research professor of education at New York University, wrote, "Homework does not help
students who do not do it, but ... does help students who actually complete their assignments." So, in
order to benefit from homework, you must complete

Why Homework Is Important Essay
Homework that has a purpose means it is effective. In an article from DataWorks–Educational
Research, Copper says, "Some teachers assign 'shotgun homework': blanket drills, questions, and
problems. Students are given homework that is not furthering the concepts and skills. The
homework is assigned because it has been drilled into our collective mind that homework produces
higher performing students." If teachers want to have effective homework it should cover something
that was already taught and include skills they have learned. Not things students are not
understanding well.
The Fundamental Five
A article from Educational Leadership states, there is five main tasks that homework should have for
the students actually to be getting something out of it. The first one is, having a clear academic
point and purpose. To do something like that you could have a checking in with it the student.
Another reason is you can tell the student is learning something with it. Next is, there should be
different choices for the different type of students. Many students learn at different paces and have to
spend way more time on their homework than other classmates. The fourth thing is they should be
able to complete this by themselves and not having a lot of extra help. This shows the students they
are capable of doing something by themselves. Lastly, the students take an interest in the work and
for the most part find it enjoyable.
When there is a clear point to homework it makes it

Persuasive Speech On Too Much Homework
Everyday I wake up and get ready for yet another gruesome school day. As I do this, I find myself
filled with stress, anxiety, and honestly just a pure hatred, for the massive amount of homework
that is going to pile up as the day drags on. Is that really how it how it should be? I personally feel
that students are being forced under a lot of pressure because of the overwhelming amounts of
homework that is assigned to them. Before you begin with the eyerolls and rebuttals as to why
homework is important to our education, let me just I agree with you! Homework isn't entirely
useless, and it has many great qualities, but the immense amounts tend to be too much for us to bear.

Yes, I understand that sometimes I need more help on certain topics and sometimes students do need
more help with something, but I think that teachers should still have more of a limit to how much
homework they can assign, given the fat that they are only one of the seven other classes we have to
take and that's not including other out–of–school activities and clubs we are taking part in.
Along with homework being too repetitive, it can also be damaging to our physical and mental
health. Fow example, sleep. So many students, not only in my school, are losing a lot of sleep due
to all of the homework, as I said before, that they have to complete after arriving home. For me,
after getting home from a sporting event at midnight, showering, doing chores, probably eating,
doing my homework, and preparing for the next day of school, it is usually sometime around 3
o'clock at night before I actually crawl into bed. That's ridiculous! A Lot like my elders (teacher,
parents, grandparents etc.) are always nagging about us staying up all night scrolling on Instagram or
Twitter and watching Youtube, I think they should also be doing something about the insane
amounts of homework that we have keeping us up all night. My parents don't let me have my phone
in my room at night because they think/know that I will be up all night playing on it, but

Benefit Of Homework Essay
The Benefits of Homework for Kids
Learning begins at home, as the old ages goes. The main purpose is to bridge the gap between
children's learning at school and at home. It is an avenue for parents to interact with their children
and understand the content they are learning. In this way, they can provide other means of academic
support for their children. Homework is an effective tool for learning. It develops a good study habit.
Harmful effects of kid's health when consumed too much time on homework. Also, homework helpS
kids become knowledgeable. School homework is beneficial to kids' academic success.
One of the most advantage of homework is that encourages the kids' positive attitude about school.
Completing homework early in the schooling years ensures that it becomes a habit, not an
inconvenience. Teacher recognizes kids work is valuable: "Angela Downing, an elementary school
teacher in Newton, Massachusetts, has found great success in displaying excellent student
homework on the walls inside and out of her classroom" (Graham). This creates a good relationship
between student–teacher and encouraging the student in participating school work. Homework is a
lifelong learning. In the Journal "Is Home Out of Control?" states, "Juggling our assignments teaches
us important life skills" (Scholastic Choices 5). Teaching students the importance of assignments
make them successful in life. By telling them to read and study at least 30 minutes before going to
bed so that it

Essay On Homework
Homework is something that has been required for generations. Homework, like anything has many
ups and downs, many positives and negatives, many highs and lows, whatever you want to call
them. Homework ranges from kindergarten to college, and quite possibly your future job.
Homework is something that is unavoidable, it will always be there, no matter how much you try to
avoid it. Homework can be described as useless busy work that is assigned to students, but doesn't
necessarily benefit them at all.
Homework is something that causes students to miss multiple hours of sleep due to working on
homework. It can be described as stressful, difficult, but one of the better words can describe
homework as useless. Have you ever worked on a homework assignment and thought : "Why am I
doing this?" Or have you ever been up hours past your curfew because you're working on
homework? All teachers and bosses have different approaches when it comes to assigning
homework. Some deadlines are more flexible, some assignments are longer, and some are an option
for students to do. The big question still remains : "Does homework benefit students?"
If you're thinking that homework does benefit students, let's take a close look at how much
homework can actually benefit students. If a student has 7 class periods a day, and 6 of those class
periods include homework. That student is having to worry about 6 tasks, generally spending a
minimum of 3 to 4 hours working on homework. If that task is long,

What Does Homework Mean To You Essay
People often say there aren't enough hours in the day, or there is not enough time to help out, or do
homework, or do anything new that they want to do with someone that they want to do it with.
School gives you a ton of homework, especially in college with both reading material and
assignments. For someone like me, who struggles with reading, there just seems to be no point
because I have a hard time comprehending what I read. It takes so long. I find time to work on my
assignments little by little. It is hard for me to balance school, homework and working. I am
fortunate that in my job I have a lot of down time which enables my being able to work on my
homework while at work. My bosses are very understanding and encourage me to do well with

The Importance of Homework Essay
Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden
to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but
teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in
school.
Some people don't know exactly what homework is. Homework is defined as an out of class
activity assigned to students as an extension or elaboration of classroom work(KidSource). There
are three types of homework teachers generally give out. The first is Practice assignments, they are
assignments that reinforce newly acquired skills or knowledge(KidSource). An example of these
assignments is writing definitions down for new words...show more content...
Parents, students, and teachers all sometimes wonder how useful is homework? Though studies
examining the relationship between homework and school achievement have been inclusive(ERIC).
Still many teachers and researchers still agree that homework helps students achieve higher grades in
school. Schools that assigned homework frequently showed higher student achievement than schools
that assigned little homework(ERIC). This means that homework is working. Studies have generally
found that if teachers carefully plan homework, homework can be quite helpful(KidSource).
Homework has proven its effectiveness and is a very powerful factor in student performance.
Students should only spend enough time on homework so that the subject is reinforced and not just
a waste of time. The national PTA suggest that from K–3 grades there should be no more than 20
minutes a day, for 4–6 grades there should be 20–40 minutes of homework, and from 7–12 grades
time varies do to types of subjects and number of subjects taken(KidSource). Anymore than these
recommended amount of times is seen excessive by the national PTA. Surprisingly U.S. students
are working as hard as Asians: 24% of eighth graders do more then two hour of homework
compared to Japans 28% and Germanys 17%(Brimelow108). Are we working to hard, researchers
don't think so, U.S. student grades are improving. As of 1996 one in every sixth grader does more

Essay on Does Homework Actually Help Students
Everyone at one point in time has complained they have had too much homework. Especially in
High School. I was always told homework will help me because it is a way to practice and fully
master the material I needed to learn. In high school students spend a few hours a night doing what
they see as busy work, meaning they do not think it is helping them at all. Some students do not
mind work load. They feel doing the problems, writing the short responses, filling out packets, helps
them because they practice and remember the material. Aquestion that has come up is whether
assigning packets of homework, mostly finding a word and it's definition, will help students master
material better than assigning less or none at all. I believe that...show more content...
In cases like this, students do not learn the material. By simply writing many definitions, or even
writing wrong definitions, students do not grasp a deep understanding of concepts or main points of
the material. As stated in the book Helping Your Child with Homework, the best type of homework
assignments are the type that include some kind of feedback from the teacher to the student; the
homework assigned to students should also be at a level appropriate for the students learning
abilities, and the assignments should challenge the student intellectually (book citation). Packets
filled with simple questions such as " what is meiosis" or "give the definition of simile" do not
challenge students and teachers do not give much, or any, feedback to students with this type of
homework. Many argue that it is difficult for teachers to give feedback when they teach one hundred
or more students. The amount of papers they need to grade is high and they simply do not have the
time to write comments on every assignment. My answer to this is simple. Instead of assigning
packets of homework, assign a few critical thinking questions. The students would give a brief
summary on the main concept, then perhaps paraphrase a definition that is important to know.
Students would then really think about their answers and the teacher could give comments since
they will no longer have to skim packets. Teachers would only have to read

Persuasive Essay On Homework
What the public is concerned about is if homework should even be assigned? Homework was
contrived to prepare students and help them engage them in the content being taught. Homework
also enacts time management skills and responsibility of growing young adults. Although the debate
about if homework should be given minimally or in discretion and that homework has no verified
benefits still stands. Homework is necessary for causing students to be engaged in the content taught
and delivers time management skills for the future.
The stance that homework is necessary and helps students engage in the content and learn time
management skills is one I concede with assiduously. Homework is given to students to help them
retain the information they learned in class and leads to academic achievement. Many research
studies have found evidence of a positive correlation between homework and student achievement.
Since students are given homework nightly, it will help them absorb the content and they can score
higher on a test or quiz. Homework also helps students develop responsibility and life skills, and
prepares students in time management skills. Research claims the ability to manage tasks provides
essential learning, increased motivation, and academic benefits. When students engage in homework
it makes them more successful and independent in the long run. Although homework may take up
time after an extracurricular and can lead to less sleep; for example, a student doing a sport after
school, getting home and having to do homework on top of that. Doing an extracurricular and still
completing homework are inherently important, students will gain time management skills if they
are doing both. If a student can learn to juggle an extracurricular with homework it will help them
learn life skills. Homework will lead to the academic growth, achievement, and the success of a
student.
The stance that homework is important, but discretion can and should be used when assigning it is
one I partially concede with. Homework should be given in the accounts of different classes, since
not all classes are the same. Homework is given in regards to class type (CP, Honors,
Advanced–Placement), homework severs different classes by rigor

Benefits Of Homework Essay
Over the years there has been question about whether or not homework is beneficial for students
throughout elementary and high school. The opinions on this topic often change with the times.
For a period of time, homework is perceived as harmful for students. Then the opinions change
and the consensus is that homework is indeed beneficial for students. The documentary Race to
Nowhere looks at the stress that is put on American students to do well in school. All of this stress
is coming from parents, teachers, administrators, even the government. Students are expected to
perform well on classroom tests as well as standardized tests. On top of the pressure to do well on
these tests, students are given a large amount of homework to complete every night. If students do
not have the homework completed, they are reprimanded or given a zero on the assignment. Many
students work, participate in an after school activity, or have family obligations outside of school.
This leaves little time to complete the homework. The video Waiting for Superman looks at how
schools are failing our students in their education. Homework is one way in which schools are
failing our students. It causes the students to become stressed because of the amount of that they
are assigned each night. Changing the way teachers use and give homework can make a difference
in the stress that students feel from school. Homework has become a common practice in schools
today. Almost all teachers assign it every night of the week starting as early as pre–kindergarten.
Joseph Simplicio's article "Homework in the 21st Century: The Antiquated and Ineffectual
Implementation of a Time Honored Educational Strategy" states three problems with homework.
The first problem is that teachers are not consistent with their homework from grade level to grade
level and from subject to subject. Some teachers in a certain grade will give a pile of homework
each night while other teachers of the same grade give little to none. The same is said for teachers
who are in schools that are departmentalized. They do not communicate with the other teachers and
coordinate the homework that they give. This results in students having homework from every
subject area every night.

The Pros and Cons of Homework Essay
Homework: Does it Help, or Harm Us? When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning
homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do
as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers
should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and
less homework helps improve test scores. The first reason teachers should give students less
homework is that it takes away their childhood. When a student goes to school for seven hours a
day, and then goes home to three hours of homework, they do not get to be a kid. It is suggested that
student adopt an eight–eight–eight schedule. This schedule being eight...show more content...
Assigning less homework in schools could reduce teen anxiety and teen depression rates (Kohn).
The next reason too much homework is harmful to students is that studies show more homework to
cause lower test scores. One to two hours of homework a week does not cause a major change in
test scores (Wolchover). There is no evidence of homework having any academic benefit in
elementary or middle school, and the academic benefit found in high school is very weak (Kohn).
Homework is not shown to help students academically until grades ten through twelve (Wolchover).
There is also no proof that homework increases good study habits in students (Kohn). On top of too
much homework making standardized test scores lower, much of this homework is just busy work
(Wolchover). Many teachers ask their student to re–write pages in a textbook. This just causes the
student to spend time on something that has no real purpose. Remedial work has no positive effect
on students. It just takes up more time ("Too Much Homework Can Cause Stress, Depression and
Lower Grades, Studies Suggest"). Even homework that is useful in some way should be limited.
Studies show that a student's time is more useful when they play an instrument or a sport. Parent's
want their student to be good at many things. It is more important to be a well–rounded person than
to ace all of your tests (Wolchover). One of the top

Problems with School-Assigned Homework Essay
Images of children and teenagers sitting at the kitchen table with books surrounding them, or sitting
at desks secluded in their room, for hours on end, dutifully studying for the next day's exam has
been around for quite some time. But recent studies have shown that just because a child is doing
homework, does not mean he or she is learning (Kohn). The fact is, the homework teachers have
assigned has gone up dramatically. In 1981, children ages six to nine received about 44 minutes of
homework a week. By 1997, children six to nine were receiving almost two hours of homework a
week (Chaika) That number has almost tripled. Though supporters have pointed out the many
benefits of homework over the years, which may have led to the increase of...show more content...
Should a student start his or her homework as soon as he or she gets home from school at about
three, that means homework should be done around seven at night. But, if the student
participates in extra curricular activities, homework might be pushed back to being finished at
around eight or nine. Plus, people need to eat. Even if it is heating up a TV dinner, that is still
about another half hour that homework is being pushed back to being done at. So now,
homework is being completed around 8:30 to 9:30. And of course, what high school student does
not hang out with friends or socialize or just plain relax every night. If a student is socializing or
relaxing to maintain a healthy lifestyle, by spending an hour or two doing these things, he or she
is now falling asleep after an exhausting day anywhere from 9:30, which is not a bad time to
midnight. And as growing human beings, should be getting at least eight hours of sleep each night
which is not going to happen if students are going to bed at midnight and waking up at 6:30 the
next morning to start the process over again. But, supporters may argue that this teaches time
management skills (Oak). All of what was previously mentioned does not in fact teach time
management skills, it teaches students to prioritize. Which can be a good skill to know, but may
not be good for grades. Say a teacher assigns the before mentioned half hour of homework. A

away from studies to appreciate what they learn. There are so many things that can help them prepare
for life outside of school and giving a lot of homework causes stress to the student and family. I
wanted to find a way to get schools to cut down on homework. Too many kids are doing badly on
a test because of the time constraints and stress to complete homework. So let's do something
about it. When I was researching, I asked myself "How can I get schools to cut down on
homework?"After all the research that I did, it was clear to me that we can help the kids in school
to have less homework.
Statistics about too much homework are illuminating: too much homework can lead to being
counterproductive. After a school day, kids come home and do their homework that can cause stress
to a family that has other needs or issues, such as low income. Too much homework can have a
negative effect because they might be from a home that doesn't have everything they need. They
might not have parents or older siblings

Many students feel very burned out from doing homework which causes stress, time constraints and
disrupted routines. Why are students required to do homework anyway? It's a waste of time so they
should not be required to do H.W. Homework is causing students stress which is resulting in students
spending time with their family and friends. It is also causing students not to be burned out and not
as engaged with school as they should be. Even though students need to learn how to manage time
effectively, including budgeting time to complete homework assignments, they shouldn't be required
to do homework. But even though it may have benefits it doesn't it doesn't improve students
capability to have better grades.
To begin with, homework is causing major stress for students today. student's don't feel like they

still has advantages and disadvantages but, all–in–all I don't think homework is necessary for
students or anyone in

  • 1. Homework As A Good Thing Essay Roth, Grace AP Lang Period 6 October 19, 2016 Abstract Homework has been considered apart of every child's learning experience in America, but there are many downsides to homework. Homework prevents children from exploring the world they live in, besides just what they learn in the classroom and prevents many other activities. Along with this, homework can be very unhealthy is child's life due to the amount of stress it causes. There is also evidence that suggests homework has no affect on learning and in many cases is counter productive. Homework causes many conflicts within families and is in many households left to the parents and not the students. The evidence of homework being a good thing is outweighed by the evidence that shows how homework can be a negative thing in many students lives. Citations Copping, J. (2014, January 16). • 2. Pros And Cons Of Homework Essay Does homework really help or does it not help? Research shows, homework does not help students, parents, or teachers. Some people may think it does help, but from research it proves that homework does not help. One reason why it does that is because it is bad for health. Then, another reason why it doesn't help students, parents, or teachers is because it is not beneficial. To begin with, one reason why homework doesnt help students, parents, or teachers is because it is bad for health. One reason why it is bad for health is because it causes anxiety/stress. Too much homework can damage students health by making anxiety and stress, according to thecaseforandagainsthomework.com. Another reason why anxiety and stress is bad for you is because you have so much stress you go really fast on your homework and you do really bad. I have had that happen to me and it is not good. If that always happens then that could really affect your grade. Then, the last reason why anxiety and stress is bad is because, anxiety and stress is a mental thing and if you keep on having it it could damage your brain, according to the website sciencedaily.com . Having your anxiety and stress damage your brain over homework is just crazy. Another reason why homework is bad for health is because you can have anger. Having anger when you are doing homework is not good. For instance, one thing about having anger during homework is that some people can get really mad because they donВґt know how to do their Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Excessive Amount Of Homework On Students Essay Many teachers assign large amounts of homework to students. Unfortunately this causes a lot of stress, loss of time, or decrease in homework quality and effectiveness. Too much homework is not worth the extra effort put out by teachers and students, and teachers should take consideration to the well–being of the students by encouraging them to learn and get the schoolwork done effectively and correctly. Student's careers and lives often depend on what they learn in school, and what is taught can make a huge impression on their opinions and attitudes, so it is imperative that they are taught in a manner that is effective and understandable. Large amounts of homework are not the most effective ways to teach. Excessive amounts of homework are not the effective way of helping students learn and remember their material. The goal of a teacher is to teach and to encourage learning that the students can use for the rest of their lives, but some teachers seem to feel that more work assigned will mean more information remembered. However, it is more efficient to work with the students strengths and encourage them to learn in ways that are the best for them. If a student's science teacher assigns four chapters of reading and twenty questions for each chapter, the math teacher assigns three chapters with thirty questions for each, and the literature teacher assigns chapters one through twelve of Pride and Prejudice the student will focus more on getting through the assignment and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. The Importance Of Homework Essay The equation isn't adding up: why too much homework is bad for the teenage brain. High school students today are suffering from the pressure of grades, sports, sleep, and keeping up with a social life while going to school a average of five days a week. Parents and teachers sometimes wonder why teenagers are so crabby or tired and the answer is no time for ourselves. Today in schools the average amount of homework a typical high school student gets a night is estimated at 3.5 hours. That is spaced out between 5–6 classes which a student has to remember each of the subjects throughout the day to understand and complete the homework. This is after a long day at school learning about what our homework will be later, when half of the class time should be set for finishing our homework in each class. A survey was proposed by the National Federation of State High School Associations that, an average of 7.9 million students participate in some type of sport outside of school. There are only a estimated of 15.1 million students attending high schools in the U.S today, which means over half of students are not just "students". Some high school's are concluding that if kids spend more time on sports, students spend less time on homework, meaning that is why they are not getting it done. Teachers are not aloud to conclude how us as students, spend our time outside of school because we deserve to have fun hobbies outside of being in a block building a majority of our day. • 5. Homework Essay Definition of homework: Tasks assigned to students by school teachers that are intended to be carried out during non–school hours. Why do we have homework? What are the benefits of homework? Is there such thing as too much homework? Homework helps you to gain, and retain more knowledge than would be possible with only classroom work, this is a huge reason students get homework. Homework does actually have benefits, it teaches a host of important life skills, from responsibility and time management in prioritizing and organizing. But, how much is too much homework? That depends on multiple complex or elaborate factors, including the singular intelligence or capability of the child, type of classes, and available time. If you do have a lot...show more content... That depends on multiple complex or elaborate factors, including the singular intelligence or capability of the child, type of classes, and available time. I'm afraid some people after a certain amount of time doing homework, they begin to shut down. However, there have been studies that show how outside of school learning improves in–class learning, and I agree with that. Without homework, I'd forget part of what we learned the previous day the minute my head hit the pillow. But, if you must skip a simple 90 minutes of soccer practice because homework is taking two hours longer than you thought, there's a problem. If you do have a lot of homework at a time, it helps to be organized. Prioritizing can help you to complete your homework assignments with minimal stress. "A poll conducted for the Associated Press earlier this year found that about 57 percent of parents felt their child was assigned about the right amount of homework. Another 23 percent thought it was too little, 19 percent thought it was too much." K–2 works on homework for about 10–20 minutes a night. 3–6 graders have about 30–60 minutes a night usually. When you get into junior high you'll have about 90 minutes. Students who are in college have around 90–150 minutes a night! Do you now understand why we students have homework? What are the benefits of homework? And if there Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Homework: Beneficial or Not? What is homework? Most students might say that homework is a time waster and is unrelated to learning. Both are logical statements in the eyes of the average student, but what are the facts and why is homework part of our school curriculum? Homework has been a standing tradition in America since the 1950's due to the education war with the Soviets. Ever since the ending of the Cold War in the early 1990's, the American consensus openly welcomed homework as a part of school curriculum. Homework is in our modern American roots, and it is so effective it has stayed in our foundation. Homework is beneficial to young scholars in our school system to this date: it is helpful and beneficial in the way to reinforce knowledge learned in schools, it provides clarity and room for the short class schedule, and it also forces the need to use responsibility and time management. Reviewing and reinforcing topics learned in school is an important way to clarify and to extend the realm of comprehension that students need in order to pass standardized tests with flying colors! Some students may not fully understand the topic, such as "systems of equations" in math, and may not notice their ignorance for a certain part until they try to do their homework. Of course, that is why there are teachers and not textbooks that stare at you in class, however, learning and understanding topics on your own during silence and solidarity may be beneficial to most students. Twenty–five percent of learning Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Homework Is Unnecessary And A Waste Of Time If you think back to when you were in school, the homework you have been given has helped you in some ways. Your teachers most likely gave you the homework for a real purpose besides to be mean. Homework includes many benefits after doing it. Some people think that homework is extremely important and necessary. While most students and some adult think that homework is completely unnecessary and a waste of time. In my opinion, teachers should continue to give students homework if they do not already because homework is very beneficial after completing it thoughtfully. I also completely disagree with people that think homework is completely unnecessary and that it is a waste of time. I believe that homework is the exact opposite. There are many benefits of doing homework. Homework can also help practice, review, reinforce, and extend the material learned in class. It can also enhance student education. Homework can also teach students life skills that will be helpful later on in life. The United States Department of Education wrote, "Homework can have many benefits for... children.... Homework can help students develop study skills that will be of value even after they leave school." Homework will only be helpful after doing it. Diane Ravitch, a research professor of education at New York University, wrote, "Homework does not help students who do not do it, but ... does help students who actually complete their assignments." So, in order to benefit from homework, you must complete Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Why Homework Is Important Essay Homework that has a purpose means it is effective. In an article from DataWorks–Educational Research, Copper says, "Some teachers assign 'shotgun homework': blanket drills, questions, and problems. Students are given homework that is not furthering the concepts and skills. The homework is assigned because it has been drilled into our collective mind that homework produces higher performing students." If teachers want to have effective homework it should cover something that was already taught and include skills they have learned. Not things students are not understanding well. The Fundamental Five A article from Educational Leadership states, there is five main tasks that homework should have for the students actually to be getting something out of it. The first one is, having a clear academic point and purpose. To do something like that you could have a checking in with it the student. Another reason is you can tell the student is learning something with it. Next is, there should be different choices for the different type of students. Many students learn at different paces and have to spend way more time on their homework than other classmates. The fourth thing is they should be able to complete this by themselves and not having a lot of extra help. This shows the students they are capable of doing something by themselves. Lastly, the students take an interest in the work and for the most part find it enjoyable. When there is a clear point to homework it makes it Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Persuasive Speech On Too Much Homework Everyday I wake up and get ready for yet another gruesome school day. As I do this, I find myself filled with stress, anxiety, and honestly just a pure hatred, for the massive amount of homework that is going to pile up as the day drags on. Is that really how it how it should be? I personally feel that students are being forced under a lot of pressure because of the overwhelming amounts of homework that is assigned to them. Before you begin with the eyerolls and rebuttals as to why homework is important to our education, let me just I agree with you! Homework isn't entirely useless, and it has many great qualities, but the immense amounts tend to be too much for us to bear. Too much homework can really be a problem for students, some have...show more content... Yes, I understand that sometimes I need more help on certain topics and sometimes students do need more help with something, but I think that teachers should still have more of a limit to how much homework they can assign, given the fat that they are only one of the seven other classes we have to take and that's not including other out–of–school activities and clubs we are taking part in. Along with homework being too repetitive, it can also be damaging to our physical and mental health. Fow example, sleep. So many students, not only in my school, are losing a lot of sleep due to all of the homework, as I said before, that they have to complete after arriving home. For me, after getting home from a sporting event at midnight, showering, doing chores, probably eating, doing my homework, and preparing for the next day of school, it is usually sometime around 3 o'clock at night before I actually crawl into bed. That's ridiculous! A Lot like my elders (teacher, parents, grandparents etc.) are always nagging about us staying up all night scrolling on Instagram or Twitter and watching Youtube, I think they should also be doing something about the insane amounts of homework that we have keeping us up all night. My parents don't let me have my phone in my room at night because they think/know that I will be up all night playing on it, but Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Benefit Of Homework Essay The Benefits of Homework for Kids Learning begins at home, as the old ages goes. The main purpose is to bridge the gap between children's learning at school and at home. It is an avenue for parents to interact with their children and understand the content they are learning. In this way, they can provide other means of academic support for their children. Homework is an effective tool for learning. It develops a good study habit. Harmful effects of kid's health when consumed too much time on homework. Also, homework helpS kids become knowledgeable. School homework is beneficial to kids' academic success. One of the most advantage of homework is that encourages the kids' positive attitude about school. Completing homework early in the schooling years ensures that it becomes a habit, not an inconvenience. Teacher recognizes kids work is valuable: "Angela Downing, an elementary school teacher in Newton, Massachusetts, has found great success in displaying excellent student homework on the walls inside and out of her classroom" (Graham). This creates a good relationship between student–teacher and encouraging the student in participating school work. Homework is a lifelong learning. In the Journal "Is Home Out of Control?" states, "Juggling our assignments teaches us important life skills" (Scholastic Choices 5). Teaching students the importance of assignments make them successful in life. By telling them to read and study at least 30 minutes before going to bed so that it Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Essay On Homework Homework is something that has been required for generations. Homework, like anything has many ups and downs, many positives and negatives, many highs and lows, whatever you want to call them. Homework ranges from kindergarten to college, and quite possibly your future job. Homework is something that is unavoidable, it will always be there, no matter how much you try to avoid it. Homework can be described as useless busy work that is assigned to students, but doesn't necessarily benefit them at all. Homework is something that causes students to miss multiple hours of sleep due to working on homework. It can be described as stressful, difficult, but one of the better words can describe homework as useless. Have you ever worked on a homework assignment and thought : "Why am I doing this?" Or have you ever been up hours past your curfew because you're working on homework? All teachers and bosses have different approaches when it comes to assigning homework. Some deadlines are more flexible, some assignments are longer, and some are an option for students to do. The big question still remains : "Does homework benefit students?" If you're thinking that homework does benefit students, let's take a close look at how much homework can actually benefit students. If a student has 7 class periods a day, and 6 of those class periods include homework. That student is having to worry about 6 tasks, generally spending a minimum of 3 to 4 hours working on homework. If that task is long, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. What Does Homework Mean To You Essay People often say there aren't enough hours in the day, or there is not enough time to help out, or do homework, or do anything new that they want to do with someone that they want to do it with. School gives you a ton of homework, especially in college with both reading material and assignments. For someone like me, who struggles with reading, there just seems to be no point because I have a hard time comprehending what I read. It takes so long. I find time to work on my assignments little by little. It is hard for me to balance school, homework and working. I am fortunate that in my job I have a lot of down time which enables my being able to work on my homework while at work. My bosses are very understanding and encourage me to do well with Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. The Importance of Homework Essay Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in school. Some people don't know exactly what homework is. Homework is defined as an out of class activity assigned to students as an extension or elaboration of classroom work(KidSource). There are three types of homework teachers generally give out. The first is Practice assignments, they are assignments that reinforce newly acquired skills or knowledge(KidSource). An example of these assignments is writing definitions down for new words...show more content... Parents, students, and teachers all sometimes wonder how useful is homework? Though studies examining the relationship between homework and school achievement have been inclusive(ERIC). Still many teachers and researchers still agree that homework helps students achieve higher grades in school. Schools that assigned homework frequently showed higher student achievement than schools that assigned little homework(ERIC). This means that homework is working. Studies have generally found that if teachers carefully plan homework, homework can be quite helpful(KidSource). Homework has proven its effectiveness and is a very powerful factor in student performance. Students should only spend enough time on homework so that the subject is reinforced and not just a waste of time. The national PTA suggest that from K–3 grades there should be no more than 20 minutes a day, for 4–6 grades there should be 20–40 minutes of homework, and from 7–12 grades time varies do to types of subjects and number of subjects taken(KidSource). Anymore than these recommended amount of times is seen excessive by the national PTA. Surprisingly U.S. students are working as hard as Asians: 24% of eighth graders do more then two hour of homework compared to Japans 28% and Germanys 17%(Brimelow108). • 14. Essay on Does Homework Actually Help Students Everyone at one point in time has complained they have had too much homework. Especially in High School. I was always told homework will help me because it is a way to practice and fully master the material I needed to learn. In high school students spend a few hours a night doing what they see as busy work, meaning they do not think it is helping them at all. Some students do not mind work load. They feel doing the problems, writing the short responses, filling out packets, helps them because they practice and remember the material. Aquestion that has come up is whether assigning packets of homework, mostly finding a word and it's definition, will help students master material better than assigning less or none at all. I believe that...show more content... In cases like this, students do not learn the material. By simply writing many definitions, or even writing wrong definitions, students do not grasp a deep understanding of concepts or main points of the material. As stated in the book Helping Your Child with Homework, the best type of homework assignments are the type that include some kind of feedback from the teacher to the student; the homework assigned to students should also be at a level appropriate for the students learning abilities, and the assignments should challenge the student intellectually (book citation). Packets filled with simple questions such as " what is meiosis" or "give the definition of simile" do not challenge students and teachers do not give much, or any, feedback to students with this type of homework. Many argue that it is difficult for teachers to give feedback when they teach one hundred or more students. The amount of papers they need to grade is high and they simply do not have the time to write comments on every assignment. My answer to this is simple. Instead of assigning packets of homework, assign a few critical thinking questions. The students would give a brief summary on the main concept, then perhaps paraphrase a definition that is important to know. Students would then really think about their answers and the teacher could give comments since they will no longer have to skim packets. Teachers would only have to read Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Persuasive Essay On Homework What the public is concerned about is if homework should even be assigned? Homework was contrived to prepare students and help them engage them in the content being taught. Homework also enacts time management skills and responsibility of growing young adults. Although the debate about if homework should be given minimally or in discretion and that homework has no verified benefits still stands. Homework is necessary for causing students to be engaged in the content taught and delivers time management skills for the future. The stance that homework is necessary and helps students engage in the content and learn time management skills is one I concede with assiduously. Homework is given to students to help them retain the information they learned in class and leads to academic achievement. Many research studies have found evidence of a positive correlation between homework and student achievement. Since students are given homework nightly, it will help them absorb the content and they can score higher on a test or quiz. Homework also helps students develop responsibility and life skills, and prepares students in time management skills. Research claims the ability to manage tasks provides essential learning, increased motivation, and academic benefits. When students engage in homework it makes them more successful and independent in the long run. Although homework may take up time after an extracurricular and can lead to less sleep; for example, a student doing a sport after school, getting home and having to do homework on top of that. Doing an extracurricular and still completing homework are inherently important, students will gain time management skills if they are doing both. If a student can learn to juggle an extracurricular with homework it will help them learn life skills. Homework will lead to the academic growth, achievement, and the success of a student. The stance that homework is important, but discretion can and should be used when assigning it is one I partially concede with. Homework should be given in the accounts of different classes, since not all classes are the same. Homework is given in regards to class type (CP, Honors, Advanced–Placement), homework severs different classes by rigor Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Benefits Of Homework Essay Over the years there has been question about whether or not homework is beneficial for students throughout elementary and high school. The opinions on this topic often change with the times. For a period of time, homework is perceived as harmful for students. Then the opinions change and the consensus is that homework is indeed beneficial for students. The documentary Race to Nowhere looks at the stress that is put on American students to do well in school. All of this stress is coming from parents, teachers, administrators, even the government. Students are expected to perform well on classroom tests as well as standardized tests. On top of the pressure to do well on these tests, students are given a large amount of homework to complete every night. If students do not have the homework completed, they are reprimanded or given a zero on the assignment. Many students work, participate in an after school activity, or have family obligations outside of school. This leaves little time to complete the homework. The video Waiting for Superman looks at how schools are failing our students in their education. Homework is one way in which schools are failing our students. It causes the students to become stressed because of the amount of that they are assigned each night. Changing the way teachers use and give homework can make a difference in the stress that students feel from school. Homework has become a common practice in schools today. Almost all teachers assign it every night of the week starting as early as pre–kindergarten. Joseph Simplicio's article "Homework in the 21st Century: The Antiquated and Ineffectual Implementation of a Time Honored Educational Strategy" states three problems with homework. The first problem is that teachers are not consistent with their homework from grade level to grade level and from subject to subject. Some teachers in a certain grade will give a pile of homework each night while other teachers of the same grade give little to none. The same is said for teachers who are in schools that are departmentalized. They do not communicate with the other teachers and coordinate the homework that they give. This results in students having homework from every subject area every night. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. The Pros and Cons of Homework Essay Homework: Does it Help, or Harm Us? When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and less homework helps improve test scores. The first reason teachers should give students less homework is that it takes away their childhood. When a student goes to school for seven hours a day, and then goes home to three hours of homework, they do not get to be a kid. It is suggested that student adopt an eight–eight–eight schedule. This schedule being eight...show more content... Assigning less homework in schools could reduce teen anxiety and teen depression rates (Kohn). The next reason too much homework is harmful to students is that studies show more homework to cause lower test scores. One to two hours of homework a week does not cause a major change in test scores (Wolchover). There is no evidence of homework having any academic benefit in elementary or middle school, and the academic benefit found in high school is very weak (Kohn). Homework is not shown to help students academically until grades ten through twelve (Wolchover). There is also no proof that homework increases good study habits in students (Kohn). On top of too much homework making standardized test scores lower, much of this homework is just busy work (Wolchover). Many teachers ask their student to re–write pages in a textbook. This just causes the student to spend time on something that has no real purpose. Remedial work has no positive effect on students. It just takes up more time ("Too Much Homework Can Cause Stress, Depression and Lower Grades, Studies Suggest"). Even homework that is useful in some way should be limited. Studies show that a student's time is more useful when they play an instrument or a sport. Parent's want their student to be good at many things. It is more important to be a well–rounded person than to ace all of your tests (Wolchover). One of the top Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Problems with School-Assigned Homework Essay Images of children and teenagers sitting at the kitchen table with books surrounding them, or sitting at desks secluded in their room, for hours on end, dutifully studying for the next day's exam has been around for quite some time. But recent studies have shown that just because a child is doing homework, does not mean he or she is learning (Kohn). The fact is, the homework teachers have assigned has gone up dramatically. In 1981, children ages six to nine received about 44 minutes of homework a week. By 1997, children six to nine were receiving almost two hours of homework a week (Chaika) That number has almost tripled. Though supporters have pointed out the many benefits of homework over the years, which may have led to the increase of...show more content... Should a student start his or her homework as soon as he or she gets home from school at about three, that means homework should be done around seven at night. But, if the student participates in extra curricular activities, homework might be pushed back to being finished at around eight or nine. Plus, people need to eat. Even if it is heating up a TV dinner, that is still about another half hour that homework is being pushed back to being done at. So now, homework is being completed around 8:30 to 9:30. And of course, what high school student does not hang out with friends or socialize or just plain relax every night. If a student is socializing or relaxing to maintain a healthy lifestyle, by spending an hour or two doing these things, he or she is now falling asleep after an exhausting day anywhere from 9:30, which is not a bad time to midnight. And as growing human beings, should be getting at least eight hours of sleep each night which is not going to happen if students are going to bed at midnight and waking up at 6:30 the next morning to start the process over again. But, supporters may argue that this teaches time management skills (Oak). All of what was previously mentioned does not in fact teach time management skills, it teaches students to prioritize. Which can be a good skill to know, but may not be good for grades. Say a teacher assigns the before mentioned half hour of homework. A Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Essay On Homework A high schooler comes home from school. He gets out his homework and gets started. The mom of the student said start your homework and then we will eat.The mom spends an hour at dinner, but the student is not done with his homework. He is asking his dad all types of questions, but he is too busy to help. That happens every day at this family home. When the boy got his test scores back later in the year, they were so low. Students have busy lifestyles and stress at home. They need time away from studies to appreciate what they learn. There are so many things that can help them prepare for life outside of school and giving a lot of homework causes stress to the student and family. I wanted to find a way to get schools to cut down on homework. Too many kids are doing badly on a test because of the time constraints and stress to complete homework. So let's do something about it. When I was researching, I asked myself "How can I get schools to cut down on homework?"After all the research that I did, it was clear to me that we can help the kids in school to have less homework. Statistics about too much homework are illuminating: too much homework can lead to being counterproductive. After a school day, kids come home and do their homework that can cause stress to a family that has other needs or issues, such as low income. Too much homework can have a negative effect because they might be from a home that doesn't have everything they need. They might not have parents or older siblings Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. What Is Homework Essay Homework Essay Many students feel very burned out from doing homework which causes stress, time constraints and disrupted routines. Why are students required to do homework anyway? It's a waste of time so they should not be required to do H.W. Homework is causing students stress which is resulting in students spending time with their family and friends. It is also causing students not to be burned out and not as engaged with school as they should be. Even though students need to learn how to manage time effectively, including budgeting time to complete homework assignments, they shouldn't be required to do homework. But even though it may have benefits it doesn't it doesn't improve students capability to have better grades. To begin with, homework is causing major stress for students today. student's don't feel like they have quality time with family members and friends. Many students have routines that are being disrupted. It states in 'Text 1' that, "A child who has several hours of homework for example might not be able to eat dinner with her parents..." The parents might be offended that their child is not sitting with them at the dinner table to eat with them. They eat dinner late they might even sleep late and wake up late which will cause a lot of problems.
