My friend Aaron rocked me with an unsuspecting blow to the stomach. "Oww, what was that
for?!?" I asked him in shock. "You stole my kill," he responded. We were playing the very violent,
very bloody, very popular shoot 'em up video game, Halo for the XBOX. Aaron was always a nice,
well–mannered, and generally friendly person, until we met in the video game arena. It was almost
as if he was a completely changed person once the game was popped into the XBOX disk drive.

The bloodiness began with Moral Kombat, a second rate fighting game first introduced in the
early 1990's on the Sega Genesis was the catalyst for video game violence today. Blood is spewed
on every punch, kick, and blow that is thrown in Mortal Kombat. The game doesn't just consist of a
horrendous amount of blood, but it also contains extremely horrifying finishing moves known as
fatalities. These fatalities are especially sick and gruesome. After winning a fight with Kano, a
character from the game, he would raise his hand and savagely pull out the heart of his defeated
opponent, and as the other character slumped to the ground, Kano would raise the beating heart into
the air as if it were a gold trophy.
I high–tail it in my sleek, stolen, sports car, as countless cops and FBI agents pursue me in a
grueling high speed chase. It all started when I blew up a night club owned by a rival gang–member
with 15 grenades, and 22 rounds from my sub–machine gun. After that I ran into a policeman near
the scene, and emptied 29 rounds into his chest with my AK–47. I continue to rampage down the
highway furiously looking for an escape route. Hopefully I'll be able to get away so I can finish my

for consequences. The type of faulty thinking creates stressors in children which can lead to the
onset of many symptoms. Children who partake in video game violence are more likely to have
increased feelings of hostility, decreased emotional response to the portrayal of violence, and injury
that lead to violent behavior through imitation. A new study employing state–of–the–art
brain–scanning technology says that violent video games can cause an individual to become
violent. Researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine say that brain scans of kids
who played a violent video game showed an increase in emotional arousal and a corresponding
decrease of activity in brain areas involved in self–control, inhibition, and attention. In short, when
playing a violent game, an individual's brain processes the game playing as "fictional", but later can
project some of the unknown effects as violence or aggression.
How long does the aggression last? A study was conducted by Dr. Craig A. Anderson, Ph.D., of
Iowa State University, and his colleagues. They researched how children and teen's video game
patterns related to their behavior three to six months later. It included a mixed background of
individuals ranging from ages 9 to 18 totaling 1,414 subjects. In one group the subjects listed their 3

These things impact a child more than we realize. Many parents do not limit their child's screen

behavior is linked to the amount of time children are allowed to play video games–and daily media
use by children is increasing significantly.". Media especially video games affects the behavior of
people in society.
Technology is a big thing in our world today and it will continue to grow. According to

television, an hour using the Internet on a computer, an hour and seven minutes on a smartphone
and two hours, 46 minutes listening to the radio.". These numbers show that we revolve around
technology. While doing these daily tasks we may not realize how much violence we are actually
witnessing.
Video games were first introduced in the 1940's and since then they have evolved greatly. A
half–billion people on earth play video games an "hour a day," of whom 183 million are
American. In fact, 97 percent of American young people ages 12 to 17 play video games (Jane
McGonigal). There is a huge number of young people that play video games daily, many whom
play it way longer than in hour. Video games are an everyday task to many people, but they do not
realize the harm it can cause.

pulled Grand Theft Auto IV off the shelves after Polwat Chinno, an 18 year old was convicted of
robbing and stabbing a Bangkok taxi driver. So what was Chinno's reason for the robbery and
stabbing? He wanted to recreate a scene from Grand Theft Auto because his parents simply could
not afford to buy him the game. Instead to experience the game, and the feeling of violence, he
recreated it in real life. The boy was known for being very polite, and well mannered. "He tried to

student allegedly told the police he had not intended to kill the cabbie and only wanted to rob

Many times, I have walked into a room watching children play video games, but not just any video

To a lazy onlooker, violence in art has no other meaning than that of a primal nature. The use of
violence in abstraction is akin to the use of color in a painting. Video games and films in particular
are subject to such scrutiny as the use of violence is common in these mediums. The point of art

Therefore, it is absurd to think that video games and movies could invoke violent feelings onto

As many parents and educators like to emphasise, "Violent video games make kids more violent".
Video games affecting youth is a very debatable topic. Most people just come to that conclusion
without acquiring any evidence or reason, but there are some reasons why this is a wrong
assumption. I believe that violent video games are actually good for people. They allow them to

let them play with friends. When it come violent games that are discussed considerably, like Call
of Duty, Halo, or Battlefield, the violence is not even the main reason these games are played. If a

One of the main concerns with respect to violence in video games compared to other media is the
fact that games are immersive, and interactive. They are repetitive, and based on a reward system
which is a proven psychological component of classical conditioning discovered by Ivan Pavlov.

Even when games were first introduced in the 1970s there was controversy surrounding them. The
first game which had controversy about the violence was Death Race, released in 1976. The object
of the game was to run down fleeing gremlins, which then turned into tombstones. Although the
graphics were very basic, the stick gremlins apparently resembled pedestrians, and this had people
at the time worried about their children playing something so violent. Because of this "sick and
morbid" violence, the 60 minutes news programme broadcast an investigation into the psychological
impact of video games. It seems strange considering the look of games these days, and the realistic
characters, that people worried their children might be influenced by a few white pixels.
There is a point to be made that maybe a game full of violence and shooting, could be the last
straw to set someone off, who is already a naturally aggressive person anyway, but this is not really
the same thing. It is down to each individual what they take from a game, and how they perceive
their actions within the game, whether they think it is right or wrong to shoot someone, or to cause
violence, comes from your role models who surround you as you grow up.
