- Melbourne is considered the cultural capital of Australia, and even the South Pacific, for that matter. It is a culinary, artistic, business, and even sporting center for the country. Very large metropolitan region, relative to City proper - hence, strong core city.
- Basically, Melbourne has seen it all and has retained it all, in terms of urban development and transportation planning Melbourne’s influences span Victorian urbanism and Post-WWII suburbanism….. Probably not a revelation in the planning world; LA has its share of Victorian landmarks and is a poster child for decentralization, along with many others… But as Cervero points out, the City has experienced its share of changes in political and developmental philosophies and now features the world’s largest rail system network outside of Japan & Europe, despite seemingly conflicting…. Strong core city delicately balancing decentralization efforts since Post-WWII Legendary political battles have also produced landmark planning decisions (good & bad) -
