The Digital Revolution
Statistics
– Mobile telephone subscriptions reached 17 millions –
equivalent to double the population of Greece
– 20% of the young children (7-12 years old) have cell
phones
– 91% of the adults (18-70 years old)use mobile
phones.
– 39% of academic libraries currently offer a mobile-
friendly library website, and slightly fewer (36%)
offer a mobile-friendly catalogue
– People have access to the web catalogues of the
libraries but poor online help as the only service is:
Ask a Librarian via email. 55% of academic libraries
and 24% of public libraries currently offer some type
of mobile services to their customers
What is really happening
Although overall sales of mobile handsets is in
decline, the market share of smartphones is still
on the rise
1.1 million smartphone ‘units’ were sold in 2009
in Greece
reader interest in ebooks has skyrocketed
Beyond the friendliness of user interfaces, the
availability of a variety of applications is the key
factor attracting consumer interest to smart phone
products.
Greek Libraries Landscape –
what is missing?
develop “mini- library ecosystems” of
mobile applications
integrate the library into the mobile
revolution – putting the “we” in our web
smart “library” phone
Mobile Services for Greek
Libraries Now and Tomorrow
Access Services –
Message Reference
– Interactive SMS &
– Text Message Reference
Electronic Collections
– Promote Access to
Collections via Smart
Phones
Social Networking
– Customizable Mobile
Interface for the Library
Think forward think mobile
step foot into the mobile environment
new mobile services are on the horison
– mobile layout of the library’s website
– mobile catalogue interface
– the “ability to access databases” via mobile
devices as the next highest priority
– mobile-friendly OPACs and e-resources, and
fully optimized patron account features
Dreams based on reality
Many library budgets are simply stretched too
thin already because of the economic crisis in the
country
limited staff time
20% of libraries in Greece have a web presence
All libraries wish to
– provide a mobile-optimised version of their website
– create an entry point for libraries to continue to
explore and expand mobile library services as
technology advances and librarians gain valuable
expertise in this area
New National Policy
 Deliver enhanced user services
 Establish and strengthen library’s
mobile presence educate staff,
 build local expertise
 promote discussion by offering
training sessions and professional
development options
 promise to evolve information
technologies in a national
designed mobile library
environment
New Strategy
 This vision reflects our
commitment to the value,
integrity, and diversity of
knowledge. In order to put
it into practice, it’ s
necessary to:
 Encourage collaboration
 Integrate and augment
 Manage mobile technology as an
investment
 Rethink historic assumptions
 Embed policies in strategies
 Enhance what is distinctive
 Focus on the user
 Move the library user to the centre
of library planning and service
delivery.
 Plan facilities that are flexible,
that reflect an understanding of
user needs, and that are
technology rich.
 Recruit, train, and effectively
utilize library personnel in a
flexible manner that acknowledges
both the changing nature of our
work and the demands of our
users.
The next generation will define the
“library” as content and services
available on the Internet or its
incarnation!
Thank you so much for your attention

Board Member ADBS, FRANCE
ABDS :
The leading French
Information Professionals Association
 Nearly 5 000 members
 Core activities focused on increasing employment and
employability
 ADBS is currently conducting three studies about strategic
issues :
 Evaluating usage of skills, practices, career development
and salary levels of Information Professionals
 Defining new employement-related products and services
for ADBS’s members
 Understanding long term views of large French companies’
top management regarding information needs and the future
position of Information Professionals
Mobiles in France :
much more enthusiasm on consumer
market than on corporate market
 Will the mobile corporate market really grow in the next years
in France?
 A low equipment rate of professional cell phones (21% of working
people)
 But a promising growth of smartphones (+13% in one year)
 Will specific mobile information apps develop in a significant
way?
 Internal obstacles to be overcomed :

Strong internal IT policies

A high discrepancy between powerful laptops with optimized
business applications and devices with poorer ergonomics (except
Ipad) and unstable/slow connection
A revolution to come for corporate
cell phones market, regarding French users
and Information Professionals ?
 A permanent need of connection to innovative apps
and real time access to business data
 Impressive capabilities of mobile devices
 Smartphones users being Info Pros’ traditional
customers
 « Grown-up » customers, willing to choose their own
contents and applications
 To be considered in a new way by Info Pros
Challenges to be faced
by Information Professionals
 Info Pros and customers drifting further apart
 Much more difficult than technical challenge of
designing and delivering services on mobiles:
how will Info Pro reposition their relationship
with customers ?
 Content providers targeting different
communities of users through fitted and well
packaged applications
What role will the Info Pros of the future
play with mobiles?
 A dual position to manage : demonstrating cost-
effectiveness of expert search, and being at the same
time purchasing advisors for apps
 … and a question : what about information post-
processing and how to feed shared knowledge
systems with « mobile information »?
 Moving the relationship forward with customers in an
extended business sphere
 Taking a proactive approach and investing in marketing
 Innovating services, based on mobile devices’ features:

Personalisation

Interactivity and exchange

Real time access to information
 Exploring new communication and contribution patterns

  • 34. Mobiles in France : much more enthusiasm on consumer market than on corporate market  Will the mobile corporate market really grow in the next years in France?  A low equipment rate of professional cell phones (21% of working people)  But a promising growth of smartphones (+13% in one year)  Will specific mobile information apps develop in a significant way?  Internal obstacles to be overcomed :  Strong internal IT policies  A high discrepancy between powerful laptops with optimized business applications and devices with poorer ergonomics (except Ipad) and unstable/slow connection
