  5. Page 5 in your Job Aid outlines the real benefits of using mind mapping. In short, mind mapping allows us to rapidly “put down” information, in exactly the way we think….tangentially, with one thought, leading to another and another. Because it is a visual process, we are then able to SEE all of the pieces of information and find patterns and draw relationships between them. It is almost always surprising. That is the biggest value…mind mapping allows us to find patterns and relationships between information that we could not have predicted. This kind of thinking leads to innovative problem solving. Like our first slide said, “We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them
  6. In this example, we’re going to learn the basics of Mind Mapping. This includes using a real world example and learning how to visualize, organize and analyze information - as well as learning a few FreeMind tools.Hey Jill – it looks like it’s time to chat. Could you walk us through this?

  8. Maybe some of you can identify with this picture. In this individual mind mapping example, we’re going to Mind Map a solution that will help us succeed in graduate school. Before we go step by step through this, please turn to page 6 of your Job Aid to view the Mind Map that we’ll be creating together as well as the steps we’re going to take. Now that we’re on page 6 of the job aid, notice that to create a Mind Map, we’re going to identify the central theme, the main theme, and then the minor themes. Finally, we analyze the data. This is the complete mind map we’ll create in this example. We’re going to walk step by step through this. Does everyone have their job aid? Click agree.
  9. The first step is to identify the central idea. This screenshot is of what is called a parent node in FreeMind. Our Central Idea is “How to succeed in graduate school.” Turn to page 7 in your Job Aid. To add the central idea in FreeMind, we simply double click the parent node and type our text.
  10. The second step is to determine the main theme. It’s time for a poll. Over to you, Jill.

  17. We’ve now determined some minor themes. For example, some minor themes for Communication are Contact List, Consolidation of email, phone, calendar, and email coordination, as well as fast, reliable internet. Turn to page 9 in your Job Aid. To add a minor theme to a major theme, on the top toolbar, we click insert and then select New Child Node. Then, we can type the minor theme. Page 10 displays how to insert additional minor and major themes as sibling nodes in FreeMind.
  18. Turn to page 11 in your Job Aid. Step 4 is to analyze the data. During analysis, we noticed that our major themes would all require a system.
  19. We also noticed that nearly every word implies an action. We should reword, reorganize or eliminate those that don’t. For example, calendar, contact list, fast reliable internet, and timelines aren’t actions. We chose to recatogrize them.
  20. Now we have moved develop system and infrastructure where they will apply to all of the major themes and removed anything that doesn’t imply an action. Notice we’ve formatted this Mind Map. Look at page 14 of your Job Aid to see what a difference formatting makes.Hm…we’ve done a bit of restructuring. I bet we have a poll coming up. Jill, can you help?

In this Real World example, mind mapping has helped us arrive at a working solution for being more successful in graduate school. We now know that we have to get our infrastructure in place and develop a system that incorporates time mgmnt, organization and comm.
  23. That brings Example One to a close. In this example we have learned to use mind mapping to organize, visualize and analyze information in order to solve a problem.
  24. We have completed Example 1. We’re now going to discuss how we can use Mind Mapping to provide an eLearning solution.
  25. In example 2, we’re going to learn how to create a Mind Map individually. This includes using a another real world example and we’ll learn problem clarification, questioning, how to organize findings, evaluate, ask clarifying questions, and more. You could run off to your computer and begin creating an amazing training program out of the material is the binder….or you could put mind mapping to work and ask a few question to narrow down the problem.Q: So, How does stopping to ask “Is training really the solution?” benefit your company or client?
  29. Right…There are so many reasons that stopping to ask a few more questions is a good idea. Because we are all interested in creating training that is effective, the mind mapping questioning process only works in our favor.
  30. By asking the right questions and going through a Mind Map, we invest some time up front, but overall, we use the company’s resources effectively and efficiently. Using mind mapping to go through this questioning process will allow management to understand your thinking.We’re going to have a lot of questions for Jennifer and her time is valuable, so we want to be prepared. Mind Mapping is going to help us organize our thinking.I wonder what the first question we should ask would be. Jill, can you help?
  31. Let’s begin the questioning process with our friend Horton. Given what we already know: Jim needs to sell more and we need to make a training program for that… What would be the first question that Horton would ask?How much money is in the budget for this project?Why not just fire Jim?What is the fundamental motivator of your company?
  32. If we can understand what drives the company, then we can create a training program that helps to realize that goal. This serves to narrow the focus of the training and to gather support for the training over the long term. Let’s take a look at the mind map and continue our questioning process.
  33. We used FreeMind’s “Order of importance” labels for some of the questions. The first 4 questions are “What is ACME’s Big Goal?”, “How much does Jim need to sell?” “What does Jim sell?” and “Has Jim had success before?”

  37. Here is how it looks in FreeMind after filling in the answers from Jennifer. Notice that Mind Mapping allows us to see the relationship between pieces of information. Look at page 12 of your Job Aid to view what the formatting symbols mean. From page 12 of our Job Aid, we see that the light bulb means “This gives me an idea”. However, you can really use the icons however you want. You can define what they mean.On our mind map listed here, we added the light bulb next to the question “Does he know enough about routers and switches to sell them?” We had a couple of other questions that we highlighted in orange. They are “Are the other salespeople meeting expectations?” and “If so, how are they different than Jim?”
  38. From the information on our Mind Map, we conclude that Jim doesn’t know enough about routers and switches to sell them.
  39. We can use mindmapping to help us decide what about routers and switches Jim needs to know. There’s a lot of questions that could be asked here, the first 3 we thought of are “Why do customers buy R&S” “What do they know about the R&S” and “Why would they buy from Jim?”The color coding helped us see what the underlying answers are.

  42. In FreeMind we can rapidly move nodes around to reconfigure their relationships. We can format the information to emphasize it importance and/or relationship to other pieces of information. We can use the icons to help relay our understanding of the data. So, it is also a great communication tool.
  43. What we’ve gleaned from the analysis is there are 2 MAIN questions. “Why do people buy R&S?” and “Why would they buy from Jim?” At that point, it boils down to trust. In order to buy, customers will have to trust Jim and his expertise. Now we are starting to get close to understanding what training we will need to provide for Jim.
  44. To help Jim gain the trust of customer’s, he’s going to have to understand routers and switches and be confident in his ability to recommend the best solution for his clients. Jennifer, our SME, would tell us that the best way of doing this would be to cram everything from her binders into an online training. But we know that’s not the best way.
  45. The Sales Team in this companyknow all of the situations that arise with customers. Jim really needs to know what customers need and why they need it.So, we’ve narrowed down our main questions. It’s time to chat, Jill!
  46. There are many good answers to this question. What they all point to is that we want Jim to be able to focus on learning ONLY the things about r&s that will help him successfully sell them.
  47. We could continue with this example and use mind mapping to develop the training program for Jim. But let’s move to a different real world example that will allow us to use mind mapping in other ways.
  48. We have completed Example 2. We’re now going to discuss how we can use Mind Mapping to brainstorm with a group to create a webinar just like the one we’re doing right now.

  50. Here’s the scenario. You group of three is going to create a webinar about “Online Collaboration.” Since we know how to Mind Map, we’re going to use that as a way to jump start the project. We all know by now that our first step is to define a central idea.

  52. We’ve defined the central idea as “Online Collaboration.” We’ll practice brainstorming now. What are a couple of words that come to your mind when we say “Online Collaboration?” Don’t think too much about this, just write words that come to mind.Great, let’s see how these relate to the words Patti and I came up with.

  54. Remember our second step of mind mapping is to find main themes. One method of finding a main theme is color coding similar words.   60. This is how the information would look in FreeMind. We separated this into 2 sides. The left side is logistics including what we need to do and the right side is human relations, which deals with human behaviors, etc. We’re going to try to make fewer categories so there will be a category for each person in the group. We’ll remove the pitfalls category and address the pitfalls proactively within other categories.
  61. We started analysis by color-coding “like” information. We found something surprising; the Main Themes of Characteristics and Behaviors shared a lot of like information. When we looked again at the purple, yellow and green coded words, what emerged were three new Main Themes: Communication, Co-Operation and Organization. So, we decided to pursue that line of thinking further.
  62. We questioned whether the words on the left side of the map could also be applied to Communication, Co-Operation and Organization. The first thing that popped out was that all of the tools fell under the Main Theme of Communication.
  63. The remaining information fit neatly into Co-Operation and Organization. Let’s clean it up and see what it looks like!
  64. With mind mapping, we were able to take full advantage of group brainstorming. It helped us to view the information in a way we could not have predicted and yielded a much better and clearer solution to our problem.So, we’ve narrowed our information down to 3 categories.
