children and teens are increasingly
It hasn't been so long since obesity was limited to the world of adulthood. In the United States,
things have deteriorated over the last thirty years or so. In addition to more adults being
overweight, children and teenagers are developing this condition at ever younger years. For kids,
the most obvious influences are going to be their parents but education and awareness are
important too. Ultimately, however, the parents are the ones who offer the most guidance and are
the most influential role models in a child's life. Kids who suffer from obesity face almost
immediate threats to both their physical and emotional well being. Looking beyond that, the kids
are also at high risk for lots of issues that won't surface until later on. For kids this is a terrible
situation that is almost impossible to beat back and get over. Lots of scientists, researchers and
professionals have been watching this growing trend for decades. Teenagers, pre-teens and even
young children have been steadily gaining more and more weight and the consequences to their
health are staggering. Over the last two plus decades there has been a ton of research and
studies conducted on this subject. One thing we know without a doubt is that obesity that happens
during the younger years is a major risk factor in terrible health problems that happen in the later
years. The important thing for parents to understand is there is more to the story. Clinically obese
and overweight children will experience the effects of their condition long before adulthood
arrives. Childhood obesity has been getting press coverage for a very long time. Even in the US
where this has reached epidemic proportions, the press coverage has made little difference.
We are not here to discuss how it happens or who is to blame as we all know what the causes
are. Children can have major health risks that may be life-threatening in later years if they are
officially obese or overweight. An entire generation has a huge percentage of children that are
suffering physically and even in psychological areas. As well as having to endure being a teen,
they should not have to put up with the brutality from their peers for being overweight. We shall
have a deeper look at what may be facing an obese child today. The nature of many weight-
related health conditions involves the element of time. What this means is that it can sometimes
take a lot of time for symptoms of these problems to become apparent. Of course, particularly in
the case of childhood obesity, early years of the condition can set things in motion for problems
later on. Even so, kids usually don't have as many medical problems result from obesity because
they are still young. Yet the condition itself is still thought as a risk factor for complications and
conditions later on in life. Some of the most severe problems are diabetes, high blood pressure,
cancer, liver disease, heart disease and stroke.|The steady rise in the incidence of childhood
obesity in the US has continued to astound and baffle professionals in many areas of study. It
doesn't help that almost all solid food sold in the US contains a bunch of high fructose corn syrup.
But that is another issue we will not discuss today. One of the things that makes childhood obesity
such a painful subject is that obese kids often seem like they haven't been given an honest shot
at life and that is a tragedy. In addition to the bullying they have to endure from their peers, the
kids also suffer from a variety of physical problems ranging from back pain and arthritis to Type II
diabetes. This is a hard and terrible subject and we'll look at it some more in this article.
The obese child is now facing a harrowing path toward insane health issues. One, for example, is
fatty liver disease which is perhaps the number one type of disease that affects the liver. Some
years ago people typically associated liver problems with drinking too much and sclerosis. Today,
however, we know that fatty livery disease is caused by long term obesity. What usually
exacerbates the overall problem with the liver is the simple fact that obese people have severely
dysfunctional metabolism. The liver further helps people by sorting out toxins and anything else
that is not good for your body. This, then, puts more pressure on the bodily systems of children
and teens who are obese. The variety of medical problems experienced by obese young people is
big. Lots of different things, including genetics, have influence here. Severely obese children can
easily develop various types of conditions and problems of the joints and bones. Load bearing
joints, in particular, are more likely to develop issues. Stress on the skeleton is particularly
prevalent in the hips, knees, feet and ankles. Kids who deal with joint pain usually have back pain
too as well as swelling around all of their joints. These kids also are commonly diagnosed with
arthritis. Obesity puts a lot of stress on all physical parts of the human body. If a child is
overweight then this may cause them to have sleep apnea, which can be potentially dangerous.
There are also problems that interfere with their normal breathing.
Because of a weight condition, a child can develop asthma. A different term used is exercise
intolerance and it is when something challenges your normal breathing process. You may have
noticed that overweight people often have labored breathing. This is caused by the body having to
work harder and breathe harder. This is just making it easier for you to have more stress on your
cardiovascular system. It doesn't matter how old a person is, it is likely that if they are obese they
will probably suffer from high blood pressure and hypertension. While there are some severe
medical conditions won't be seen in childhood obesity sufferers while there are some others are a
lot more likely to show up. High blood pressure is one of the problems that is often seen in kids
who are severely overweight or suffer from obesity. In addition to the obvious physical stress that
is placed on a person's body from the extra weight, there is tremendous psychological stress that
gets put there too. Physical and verbal abuse from classmates and peers is the norm for children
who are obese. So all of that adds up to a chronically stressful situation which, in turn, causes
high blood pressure to occur. Type II diabetes is a real thread to kids, teens and adults who suffer
from obesity. Of course it does seem to make a certain amount of sense that it would develop.
This particular kind of diabetes is different from Type I in that it can be prevented in some cases.
Prolonged sedentary living and weight issues like obesity are two of the leading contributors to
developing this disease. An obese body is under more pressure to produce insulin than a body
that is not obese. There is obviously an much greater amount that has to receive it. Over time the
body becomes better able to resist the insulin and that is when Type II diabetes develops.
Research has been conducted everywhere that confirms that obstructive sleep apnea is a lot
more widespread in children and teens who are obese. This is a condition that is quite serious
because it actually blocks the child's airway while he or she is sleeping. Obese and overweight
children are more prone to snoring but that is slightly deceiving according to those doing the
research. It's also possible that the snoring is a symptom of something called OSA or obstructive
sleep apnea. One possible approach to the problem is a procedure called an adenotonsillectomy
which is meant to treat the condition specifically in young people.
Perhaps the oldest expression out there is that children are cruel to each other. Perhaps most of
us have experienced that truism when we were younger. Kids who suffer from obesity are a lot
more likely to have to deal with lots of teasing and, often, being humiliated verbally. It is a marvel
how kids who have to go through that can get through all those years of it without losing their
sanity. Everybody knows how possible it is to suffer consequences of that kind of abuse. The
constant verbal assaults will have a tremendous impact in areas such as self esteem, confidence
and the list goes on.
Mostly the risks will develop in your cardiovascular system. Triglycerides are in the fatty blood
profiles of obese children as well as having elevated serum cholesterol. The early development of
these heart disease precursors early in life is something that requires immediate intervention. Just
think about a young child having to take medication that has been prescribed to counter the
effects of their high cholesterol. There are known side effects that adults accept when they have
to take these medications.
These medicines may be complicated for a young child or a teenager to take.
Pretty much anybody who is obese is forced to deal with a bunch of psychological challenges.
When it feels like all of the kids around you are mean to you every day that can cause stress, low
self esteem low self confidence and even make the child hate him or herself. Those are the silent
symptoms the obese child or teen endures, and perhaps even all alone. After the situation has
progressed enough and over enough time that person might develop sociopathic behaviors.
There isn't any real data to say how many obese teenagers go on to college. But our guess is
there are relatively few, or there are far more obese high school students than college students.
Could you really blame them for choosing not to go when they probably imagine those years to be
just as torturous as their high school years? Young girls who have gotten past puberty are also at
risk for gender specific obesity-related issues. Menstrual cycle issues are particularly prevalent in
women and girls who are obese. The issue and cause is due to the interference with normal
hormones in the female body. The larger effect is to cause all kinds of problems with the girl's
menstrual cycle. Obesity contributes to these problems for women. What is also commonly seen
as a result of this is for the obese female to essentially become sterile if the interference is
significant. After that you have to wonder what other female bodily processes are going to be
impacted when there is this severe level of hormonal disruption. Your body needs hormone
production to be predictable and healthy so that your metabolism can also function healthfully and
within a normal manner.
Science is still trying to puzzle out whether or not early onset obesity has a direct relationship with
early onset puberty. Of course, there is a fair amount of common sense involved in looking at
what we know already. To use a couple of examples we already know that kids who are
overweight and obese go into puberty sooner and grow more quickly than non obese kids. But it
is a situation in which a clear determination of causality needs to be made. While this is obviously
not a really serious threat to the health of obesity related conditions there are definitely issues that
can be related to the early onset of puberty.|This goes hand in hand with the bullying and general
ostracizing the kids encounter at school, it is almost a guarantee that obese children and teens
are pretty much guaranteed to develop social disorders. A different term is "social disability" and
there are also high levels of depression, extreme unhappiness, etc. One natural result of all of this
is super high stress levels which are known to be detrimental to both the brain and the body. One
potential reaction is for obese children to become bullies themselves. This is, obviously,
happening because the bullied children are acting out their feelings of frustration and anger at
having been bullied themselves.|For an obese child, the prospects do not appear very promising
for a few reasons. There is a long list of risks for health problems and diseases for an obese
young child when they become an adult. Is there a possibility to reverse the obese condition?
An obese teen is sixteen times more likely than a regular teen to become a very obese adult. That
obviously does not bode well for those teens. As an adult these children are looking at a very
diminished quality of life because the risk factors start to develop when they are young.
Teenagers have a faster rate of personality development and socialization than kids of other
ages. Along with those processes are the development of the teen's body image which is known
to be critical at that stage. An obese teen is going to have a hard time developing normally as far
as these things are concerned. This causes a teenager to leave high school at distinct
developmental disadvantages. It will be harder for most of them to compete and succeed by
normally accepted standards.|You already know about the severe social stigma that is attached to
kids and teens who suffer from obesity. Going to school each day must be something along the
lines of unbearable. The effects of chronic teasing, comments and even bullying will certainly
cause life-long psychological scars or even severe damage. Every person is going to react
differently to this, for sure. It is important to get counseling to deal with the ripple effect that is
brought on by these kinds of behaviors. The real issue of obesity in young kids and teens is
something that will affect everyone. You need to think about the cost this has on overall society.
Obese children are more likely to grow up to be obese adults and the costs associated with
medical treatments, etc is astronomical. This proves that obesity is really a problem for society
even though that isn't at the forefront of most peoples' awareness.
Obviously, by the time they have reached this condition, these kids are at a tremendous social
and physical disadvantage. We all know that it is difficult to lose weight and that the only way to
truly make it happen is when you have a high level of determination and support to make it
happen. Parents and friends need to offer as much support as they can. Kids and young adults
are resilient and have an easier time bouncing back once a healthy direction has been taken. But
of course it just depends on what, if any, serious medical conditions have become expressed.
We think that it is right that obese children should have a plan of action so they can start to lose
this weight. We do realize that every situation for these children is different. Although this situation
has avoided being reversed, it is very serious.
If you are a teen or adult who suffers from obesity, it is important to talk to someone who is
informed and qualified to help you with your condition. You need to be informed about what
makes your condition happened. The good news is that you can absolutely do something about
this and it is never ever too late to begin working your way back to optimum health. "The walking
wounded" is a term that is often used to describe kids, teens and young adults who were forced to
deal with this condition. This is because of the way that obesity scars the body and the spirit.

It is a marvel how kids who have to go through that can get through all those years of it without losing their sanity. Everybody knows how possible it is to suffer consequences of that kind of abuse. The constant verbal assaults will have a tremendous impact in areas such as self esteem, confidence and the list goes on. Mostly the risks will develop in your cardiovascular system. Triglycerides are in the fatty blood profiles of obese children as well as having elevated serum cholesterol. The early development of these heart disease precursors early in life is something that requires immediate intervention. Just think about a young child having to take medication that has been prescribed to counter the effects of their high cholesterol. There are known side effects that adults accept when they have to take these medications. These medicines may be complicated for a young child or a teenager to take. Pretty much anybody who is obese is forced to deal with a bunch of psychological challenges. When it feels like all of the kids around you are mean to you every day that can cause stress, low self esteem low self confidence and even make the child hate him or herself. Those are the silent symptoms the obese child or teen endures, and perhaps even all alone. After the situation has progressed enough and over enough time that person might develop sociopathic behaviors. There isn't any real data to say how many obese teenagers go on to college. But our guess is there are relatively few, or there are far more obese high school students than college students. Could you really blame them for choosing not to go when they probably imagine those years to be just as torturous as their high school years? Young girls who have gotten past puberty are also at risk for gender specific obesity-related issues. Menstrual cycle issues are particularly prevalent in women and girls who are obese. The issue and cause is due to the interference with normal hormones in the female body. The larger effect is to cause all kinds of problems with the girl's menstrual cycle. Obesity contributes to these problems for women. What is also commonly seen as a result of this is for the obese female to essentially become sterile if the interference is significant. After that you have to wonder what other female bodily processes are going to be impacted when there is this severe level of hormonal disruption. Your body needs hormone production to be predictable and healthy so that your metabolism can also function healthfully and within a normal manner. Science is still trying to puzzle out whether or not early onset obesity has a direct relationship with early onset puberty. Of course, there is a fair amount of common sense involved in looking at what we know already. To use a couple of examples we already know that kids who are overweight and obese go into puberty sooner and grow more quickly than non obese kids. But it is a situation in which a clear determination of causality needs to be made. While this is obviously not a really serious threat to the health of obesity related conditions there are definitely issues that can be related to the early onset of puberty.|This goes hand in hand with the bullying and general ostracizing the kids encounter at school, it is almost a guarantee that obese children and teens are pretty much guaranteed to develop social disorders. A different term is "social disability" and there are also high levels of depression, extreme unhappiness, etc. One natural result of all of this
  • 4. is super high stress levels which are known to be detrimental to both the brain and the body. One potential reaction is for obese children to become bullies themselves. This is, obviously, happening because the bullied children are acting out their feelings of frustration and anger at having been bullied themselves.|For an obese child, the prospects do not appear very promising for a few reasons. There is a long list of risks for health problems and diseases for an obese young child when they become an adult. Is there a possibility to reverse the obese condition? An obese teen is sixteen times more likely than a regular teen to become a very obese adult. That obviously does not bode well for those teens. As an adult these children are looking at a very diminished quality of life because the risk factors start to develop when they are young. Teenagers have a faster rate of personality development and socialization than kids of other ages. Along with those processes are the development of the teen's body image which is known to be critical at that stage. An obese teen is going to have a hard time developing normally as far as these things are concerned. This causes a teenager to leave high school at distinct developmental disadvantages. It will be harder for most of them to compete and succeed by normally accepted standards.|You already know about the severe social stigma that is attached to kids and teens who suffer from obesity. Going to school each day must be something along the lines of unbearable. The effects of chronic teasing, comments and even bullying will certainly cause life-long psychological scars or even severe damage. Every person is going to react differently to this, for sure. It is important to get counseling to deal with the ripple effect that is brought on by these kinds of behaviors. The real issue of obesity in young kids and teens is something that will affect everyone. You need to think about the cost this has on overall society. Obese children are more likely to grow up to be obese adults and the costs associated with medical treatments, etc is astronomical. This proves that obesity is really a problem for society even though that isn't at the forefront of most peoples' awareness. Obviously, by the time they have reached this condition, these kids are at a tremendous social and physical disadvantage. We all know that it is difficult to lose weight and that the only way to truly make it happen is when you have a high level of determination and support to make it happen. Parents and friends need to offer as much support as they can. Kids and young adults are resilient and have an easier time bouncing back once a healthy direction has been taken. But of course it just depends on what, if any, serious medical conditions have become expressed. We think that it is right that obese children should have a plan of action so they can start to lose this weight. We do realize that every situation for these children is different. Although this situation has avoided being reversed, it is very serious. If you are a teen or adult who suffers from obesity, it is important to talk to someone who is informed and qualified to help you with your condition. You need to be informed about what makes your condition happened. The good news is that you can absolutely do something about this and it is never ever too late to begin working your way back to optimum health. "The walking wounded" is a term that is often used to describe kids, teens and young adults who were forced to deal with this condition. This is because of the way that obesity scars the body and the spirit.
