In an age when even games are “serious” and e-learning audiences increasingly face screens of text with Next buttons, the unexpected can become the unforgettable. Fun is good for learning because it stands out. It increases engagement and provides safe areas to learn from failure. Studies show that fun actually promotes learning as elements of novelty evoke wonder and curiosity. It’s not fun for fun’s sake. It’s fun for learning’s sake. What makes learning fun? One-of-a-kind interfaces that vary with each course; surprises around every corner; everyday language; an emotional connection through meaningful material, music, and social connections; learners choosing their own paths; and any-time, any-where learning that works on all devices, including mobile. In this presentation, participants will be introduced to the science of fun, and will see specific examples of fun used effectively in workplace learning. They will experience instructional strategies for making learning fun, including gamification and game mechanics. They will learn how to use existing tools and technologies to build innovative learning environments that are collaborative, competitive, and exploratory. Participants will also gain clarity on how to evaluate good learning solutions from ineffective ones, identifying roadblocks to fun learning like the templated approach that restricts the learner from paths of exploration. And most importantly, they will see the positive impact that fun learning can have on the organization’s culture. In this presentation, see how a parrot and some gadgets increased compliance awareness, how a board game and leader board increased worldwide engagement and collaboration, and how a basketball app improve college preparedness.

What Does the Classroom of the Future Look Like? Educators worldwide are looking at diverse models for the future classroom, ranging from the most innovative college and university spaces, to models of industry and dot-com startups. Perhaps more important than what the future learning space looks like, however, is what students are being asked to do to demonstrate their learning. In this talk, catch a glimpse of what a future classroom might look like, in both its curriculum and its physical space. Come explore the DIY “Maker” movement, and what it might mean for the future. Take a look at how companies like Google foster creativity and innovation, and see what kids’ visions of a “learning center” might look like. Finally, we’ll look at an original way to create stronger community in the classroom using the popular game Minecraft as a virtual learning environment.

I've spent most of my career as part of a team working in an office, making the web a little better each day. When starting my own company, however, one of my goals was to find ways to work with the people I looked up to… who had their own separate offices in different companies spread out all over the world. In order to get started, I had to think differently about a lot of things: my day, my network, my goals, and how I communicate. I've found that working together across the internets has a lot more to do with the ability to share a vision, and a lot less to do with which is the best digital video conference service.

Are you doing enough to reach your students? What if there was a way to give your students the enthusiasm about learning by allowing them to produce something tangible while using the conceptual learning tools we teach everyday. This is where “MakerED”/ “MakerSpaces” comes in. If you have been looking for a way to jazz up your curriculum or increase the rigor and relevance of your learning activities, join me Monday, March 30, 2015, at 7pm EST/6pm CST through the Learning Revolution as we talk about what this philosophy entails and easy ways to implement this philosophy and revolutionize your teaching. Introducing “MakerEd” projects will thrill your students and engage them in the learning process with learning activities that are meaningful and interesting to students. You don’t have to be a technology expert to rejuvenate and excite your students – you just have to believe that they can succeed, so don’t miss out on this great opportunity to see how it’s done!

Ever caught yourself nodding along when someone mentions "delivering value" in Agile, but secretly wondering what the heck they actually mean? You're not alone! Join us for an eye-opening session where we'll strip away the buzzwords and dive into the heart of Agile—value delivery. But what is "value"? Is it a mythical unicorn in the world of software development, or is there more to this overused term? This isn't going to be a sit-and-get lecture. We're talking about a face-to-face, interactive meetup where YOU play a crucial role. Come along to: Define It: What does "value" really mean? We’ll build a definition that’s not just words, but a compass for your Agile journey. Contextualise It: Discover what value means specifically to you, your team, your company, and your industry. Because one size does not fit all. Deliver It: Share strategies and gather new ones for uncovering and delivering true value—no more shooting in the dark!

The standard Salesforce Approval process can be limiting in many ways, especially in complex scenarios. What if there was a way to implement very flexible approvals where one can use Apex code to make data updates in unrelated records, dynamically generate next steps details, and compute assignees on the fly? And still use UI-based configurations to implement concrete approval processes. In this session, we will share ideas behind such a solution and show a few lines of code to get you started.

Heather Hedden, Senior Consultant at Enterprise Knowledge, presented “Enterprise Knowledge Graphs: The Importance of Semantics” on May 9, 2024, at the annual Data Summit in Boston. In her presentation, Hedden describes the components of an enterprise knowledge graph and provides further insight into the semantic layer – or knowledge model – component, which includes an ontology and controlled vocabularies, such as taxonomies, for controlled metadata. While data experts tend to focus on the graph database components (RDF triple store or a label property graph), Hedden emphasizes they should not overlook the importance of the semantic layer.
