At 18 months of age significant differences are present between children from disadvantage families and children from advantage families. This difference will later transform into the achievement gap, which is costing the US 9-16% of its GDP. Here it's a small contribution to the understanding of the problem in particular with the Latino population. How can we help mothers that are motivated to participate in closing the gap?

10. I created a text reminder
program and a phone call
follow up for 15 Latino
Mothers in San Jose, CA
who wanted to read books
to their infants as a new
habit. But . . .
11. Mothers complained
that their children
DON’T like to read
books, so they WON’T
read more books to
them… too HARD for
both
12.
13. Motivation and
remainders are NOT
enough to create a habit
because these Mothers are
having problems
enjoying the activity and
making it enjoyable for
their children
15. Mothers were afraid of
the infant touching the
book and in many cases
the mothers didn’t show
the pictures to the
infants and didn’t like
the infant to interrupt
